I love how He makes such a morbid joke, then later defends Ash's character. He really cares about him. The joke just popped in his head and he just had to share it, probably to ease the tension but the other's didn't share in his morbid sense of humor

Squirtle had a duty to the Squirtle Squad before joining Ash. It's a defining trait that he was the leader of the crew and Ash was able to see that strength of brotherhood he shared with his brethren. Squirtle chose to never evolve and risk changing his personality and the responsibility he had as the leader of the Squirtle Squad.

Very interesting point that Charizards radical personality change upon evolution could've effected squirtles (and other pokemon Ash owned) view on evolving. With the legendary status the water type got, it's easy to forget that Kanto was rough on the little guy battling wise

Squirtles trouble making but loyal personality makes it one of my favorite Pokémon in the anime! Even though it’s battle record was a originally much to be desired, it was great seeing improve in the orange league and become a real pro by training with officer Jenny and becoming a fire fighter! I really hope Squirtle gets another appearance in the spotlight because we haven’t seen it beyond flashbacks and brief cameo appearances ever since it’s latest battle against Brandon

I have personally a soft spot for Ash' Squirtle. For me it is my Favourite Pokémon on the show and his story is a very lovely one and i like his Broshipping with Ash' Bulbasaur. One episode that was stand out for me is Gathering the Gang of four. What i found interesting was that i saw Bulbasaur on his two backlegs and his bulb like a Shell and his two Frontlegs like arms. It looks just to me that Bulbasaur wanted to be just like his best pal Squirtle.

Honestly, I'm pretty sure all instances of pokemon not evolving in the anime can be boiled down to evolved forms being more difficult and/or more expensive to animate. And since pokemon is relegated to being a weekly series, they definitely don't want to take that gamble. That and they need something small and cute to advertise toys to kids.

St. Anne? You mean SS Anne? I always dug Squirtle, I think it had the most fun animation of Ash's Kanto starters, seeing it going into Shell Mode and trouncing everything in its path. Also, thank you for scarring me with that Squirtle gif. I'm going to have nightmares about it for weeks now. I think Squirtle's had enough screen time on the show though, probably not necessary for it to come back anymore. Also, ye, that Pokemon League battle with Ritchie was so rigged. Charizard didn't listen, Squirtle loses because falling asleep, and Pika was tired. TR rocket made him late. It just was not a good day for Ash.

I love Ash's Squirtle. In my opinion, the water type turtle Pokemon should have withdrew in his shell to avoid Sleep Powder, or Rapid Spin.

Rapid spin wasn’t part of the move set in Indigo for gen 1 believe it was a gen 2 move because Gary used it in his battle against ash in the silver conference

I think that Ash’s Squirtle was great and it is one of his top 3 water types and if it have evolved instead of Charmander Ash wouldn’t had the same problem as with Charmeleon as Warturle and Blastoise are not as prideful as The Charmander line was and it still surprised me that the majority of Water Pokemon he had never evolved.

Squirtle's lack of evolution doesn't actually have a reason behind it. He doesn't have the same level of pride as Pikachu or Bulbasaur. Squirtle is perfectly willing to evolve and is capable of doing so, but it just never happened, probably because he's cuter and more marketable than Wartortle.

Imagine another possible reason squirtle didn't evolve, could be how the writers had ash & Gary mirror red and blue. Given red had Charizard and blue had Blastoise, thus Ash would have Charizard since Gary got squirtle as his starter.

If he would have evolved into Blastoise instead of Charmander he also wouldnt have followed Ash's order ,since he was already authoritative and mischievous from its first form and also since Ash was incompetent I also think that Blastoise could be employed by the state government to fight big fires (e.g. forest fires) since Blastoise is such a tank!!!!

I remember Ash’s Squirtle, it and it’s crew used to cause trouble after being abandoned by their original trainers but then turned over a new leaf and became fire fighters. And later in the original generations, it went back to the squirtle squad since they needed a leader back at the competition since the others were timid. The times Squirtle came back to battle along with Ash, was in the Sliver Conference and the battle against Brandon. Overall, Squirtle was a great partner.

I find it really wierd that pokemon dont want to evolve. Its simoly growing up into adulthood. Its a dumb and convoluted way of keeping the cast "marketable"

To be fair, some get super big when evolving so I get wanting to maintain mobility

love this :D but its time they let some of his pokemons evolve . its not because of ash charizard they didnt want to evolve , i can debunk that because ash Charizard makes a 180 turn in behavarior , also ash pokemons should have notice that to.
