My story of "Can't Fight This Feeling": I asked for a telescope for Christmas in 1984, which I got from my parents. I remember looking at Jupiter every night in the winter of 1985. It was cold outside, and Jupiter was always setting outside our big kitchen window. I would listen to the "top 8 at 8" on our local hit music station. When this song played, I would somehow relate it to Jupiter. "And even as I wander, I'm keeping you in sight. You're a candle in the window on a cold, dark winter's night. And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might." That's from the point of view of Jupiter, watching me watch it through the telescope. Give me a break, I was just 13! 😂

I saw REO in the early 1980s with a friend that had backstage passes because of a marriage connection to Kevin. Meeting him was a great moment, he was such a humble and decent guy, nothing like the rockstar you would have thought he would be. It was a GREAT show (what I remember of it, after all I wasn't yet 27 yo, lol) .I doubt that Kevin would remember me, but I will always remember him and his kindness, all of the band were very cool... I became familiar with REO through Hi-Infidelity, but after that album came out I later heard a song of theirs on the radio and cranked it up because I always thought it rocked. I never knew who sang it, but once it was done, the DJ said it was REO Speedwagon. The song was “Back In The Road Again.” I then decided to work backwards in their catalog and discovered a lot more great songs from them. Very underrated stuff. Too bad they decided to disband. For a hard rocking fan, REO is a band I would love to have seen live.

What an awesome guy! I like his synopsis of Glee, it was a good family show; and him talking about his kids and "Dad used to be in this band" 😊😊 If the Beatles had not played on The Ed Sullivan Show, I don't think Rock and Roll would have evolved as quickly as it seems to have evolved. It still would have evolved, but the Beatles showed us what was being created in the UK, at the time and it spurred a change in the US. It's sad that Music in the US is still "Corporate Driven" and not Artist Oriented.

"Can't Fight This Feeling" might be my favorite REO tune. That includes the "hated line". Ironically, it came my way after the bottled-lightening hit by Jack Wagner, "All I Need", and I (in my typical fashion) thought "Can't Fight This Feeling" was cut from the same cloth. I saw my first REO concert when they were on their first tour, as the opening act for Canned Heat. That was 1972. I saw my 42nd REO concert in August 2024 at the NY State fair. Shortly after that, Kevin announced that the 2024 tour would be their last. From the age of 16 to age 68, REO has been my favorite band. I know they are most famous today for their power ballads, but once upon a time they were real rockers. If you are not familiar with early REO, check out 1978's "You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish", aka the Tuna Fish album. One great rock and roll tune after another. Gary Richrath had one of the coolest solos ever on "Lucky for You". Thank you, REO for 50+ years of great music.

Fun Fact-- The song "40" (last song on War) was taken (almost) word for word from the 40th Psalm in the Bible. It took Bono 40 minutes to write it.

I became a fan of REO when Hi Infidelity came out, and am fortunate to have been able to see them in concert twice:) I wanted to be one of his background singers (okay, any band who would have me, lol!)

hey Prof, I have an idea for next year's Thanksgiving upload: The story of probably the most iconic Thanksgiving song ever, Arlo Guthrie and the story of the Alice's Restaurant Massacree.

Songwriters should just admit that when it comes to ballads cheesy is good. Cheesy is right. Cheesy fits. It always has. Don't fight against it. Cleverness can kill a good ballad.

True Professor! A lot of “Snobs” Hate ballads because all they want to do (like Kiss says) Is “Rock and Roll All Nite” (they do like Power Ballads cause of guitars all over, but they hate mellow ballads) I never knew all of this stuff about fans picking sides (like politics) until I got older, I just listened to the music. The late Eric Carmen talked about that, where he has two types of fans, (Make it three because people like me like all of his stuff) Hardcore “Snobs” that like His Raspberries stuff and hate his solo stuff cause “he’s Barry Manilow, doing too many ballads” and others that only know him for his solo stuff and get surprised that he was in a rock band. There’s a Hardcore Rock Fan or should I say "Snob" that I don’t really talk to much these days (there’s a lot of reasons for that, I won’t get into too much cause they’re too long) But I’ll say that he doesn't like songs like these, he calls them “Wimpy, Not Enough Guitar” I remember when I talked about Styx, he said “I liked Styx from the beginning but lost interest when Babe came out. Too sappy for me and the label seemed to want more ballads from them. I guess they imploded from within. Shame” and he goes on to say “I don't mind ballads like Styx's Lady because it at least had some guitar in it. Babe's lyrics are a nice tribute to his wife, just wish it rocked a bit more. But that's just me” I remember he called John Waite’s “Missing You” “Boring and Repetitive, I like his Babys stuff better” (even though I like all of his stuff, from Babys to his solo career to Bad English) Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is” as “The Song That Ruined Foreigner” and Styx’s “Mr. Robato” as “They Went Downhill With That Song” Despite these being big hits. Remember, Calm Rock Fans (Like You and I) Love these songs, but the only people that hate them are people that take rock music too seriously, cause they think rock is all about “Guitars Are Over! You can’t use acoustics or keyboards cause you're wrecking the Rock & Roll Tradition” And interesting enough, some hardcore fans knew about REO and Journey before they became famous (when they were jam bands) and once they went commercial, they stopped listening to their music.

@@ProfessorofRock No problem, My father loves it when a Rock band decides to slow it down and do ballads. He talked about how when he first heard Kiss's "Beth" or Alice Cooper's ballads ('You and Me" "I Never Cry" "Only Women Bleed" and "How You Gonna See Me Now") he was like "Wow! that doesn't sound like them, I like it." I remember telling that to the same Hardcore snob (when I was talking to him about what music appealed to my father, nothing related to ballads) He out of nowhere, gives me this weird response stating "I remember when Extreme had a couple of ballads out and a lady at work was going to buy the album. I told her that that was not their normal sound; they were more hard rock and I didn't think she would like the rest of the music on the album. She bought it anyway and later told me that I was right - she didn't like the rest." Really? What Gives!

@@ProfessorofRock And to add in one more, I remember telling him how Def Leppard seems to be the only band singing their new stuff with their old stuff and he wrote "See, there's a band I used to like but now their sound is changed so much I quit buying their albums as I was so disappointed" and I told him "I don't mind if bands change their sound, but if they're trying to be something their not, it won't work for them cause its not their sound" and he wrote "I don't want all of the songs to sound alike either. But to totally change the style of your music is not for me. All bands evolve their sound to a certain extent. Just look at the Beatles. In the end, a band can do whatever they want musically but that doesn't mean I will remain a fan of them." End of quote. Remember, I said these guys take music too seriously, I guess to them, it's like how when we watch a TV Show we use to like, but once they start "jumping the shark" we lose interest in it, but with music, we don't mind it, I guess that's because we don't take it too seriously like the hardcore fans do.
