I know that Rockers of a certain age know about him, but where is the modern love for the great Bob Segar, and his Silver Bullet Band? His voice is like a companion, through good times and bad, am ild Friend who understands and was there with you through it all...maybe I'm beimg too anecdotal, but that's always been the appeal, for me, of Segar as an adult...

*I was in Bogota, Colombia, back in the late 70s, when I saw the Elvin Bishop Band in the TV playing in the Don Kirshner Concert, the song "I Fooled Around And Fell In Love." The music and lyrics were deeply impacting. Then I said: "That singer Mickey Thomas has the best voice I have ever heard!" I thought he would become an ultra superstar, famous singer worldwide, above many other singers not as good as he. I believe Mickey Thomas' talent was grossly, criminally overlooked by music critics. Mickey deserves way more recognition for his extraordinary unique singing voice. I appreciate this interview very much. Keep on rollin', Mickey Thomas* 🎤 🎶

Mickey is aging gracefully, physically lively and energetic, with some great stories to tell. When you think about how many musical stars from the ‘70s left us long ago, this is refreshing. We get to hear him sing a few notes and his voice still has its range and purity, so it’s obvious this guy has taken good care of himself.

Remember this great classic from early 1976. I was in 8th grade. My mom was a Country Western music fan, so we mostly listened to Country Western music in the car with her. My dad's music aligned more with mine, which was top 40. Anyway, while driving to my hometown, my mom and I were going to surprise my sister by coming down to see her for the weekend. Going through Pacheco Pass in our 1972 Mercury Montego, I fell asleep. Waking up halfway through the mountain, I heard Fooled Around and Fell in Love playing on the radio. She had used one of the radio pre sets to find a radio station that would come in. Lucky break for me because the only station that would come in on our pre-set was 610 KFRC. For some reason, maybe because I wasn't being tortured by Country Western music, Fooled Around and Fell in Love just sounded so right. Today, when I hear that song, I fondly look back on the special weekend we had visiting my sister. Just yesterday, while running errands with my mom, it came on the radio. It took me right back to that weekend so long ago. It is a blessing that 47 years later, I can still hang out with my mom.

Jane by Jefferson Starship is one of the best rock vocals in history. Very few, if any, can belt that one out like Mickey. Killer tune start to finish....lyrics, arrangement, all instruments! Jane is one of the most exciting songs in all of Rock and Roll in my humble opinion! From the opening distorted chords with that piano behind em I start anticipating Mickey's vocals to kick in and man , he takes that song into the stratosphere; hitting that "... GAAMMME YEAH YEAH YEAH UH UH UH , just before the guitar solo and then comes back in with the harmonies until "so plain ta SEEEEE " after what sounds like he's just improving his way soulfully leading up to that part. Such a pitifully underated vocalist. The man has some dangerous pipes! Find your way back is another stellar example. Jefferson Starship was one of the best variations of the band , if not the best (although I do like Airplane w/ Grace in the psychedelic early days straight through the bands evolution...but, Mickey is just extraordinary and, seems to be very cool as a guy right?)✌️❤️🎶🎸🙏

I fell in love with this song at age 7 or 8 when my mom bought one of those compilation albums with several hot songs from the previous year. So it was around 1977 and I skipped every other song on the album just to hear that one over and over again and I never forgot the song. Fast forward about 50 years until 2 weeks ago and I hear this song in the grocery store and was blown out of my mind. I remember all the words and was dancing and singing like I'm 7 years old again. I wondered whatever happened to that Bishop guy. I couldn't remember his full name. So when I got back in my car, I asked Google to play the song by this guy named Bishop and Google figured out what I was talking about and found Elvin Bishop. However it kept trying to play a live version of the song but I wanted to hear the studio version and went into KZbin to find it and saw that live version and said to myself, hey I've seen this guy before but could not remember where. Then I watched the entire video clip and the name listed under the person singing was Mickey Thomas. My eyes then got as large as saucers because I realized that is the same Mickey Thomas that I loved throughout all my teen years in Jefferson Starship????😮 Wow, I never knew that Elvin Bishop wasn't singing lead and it was a band not a solo act. I swear even at 55 years of age, you are never completely done learning new tidbits about things you thought you knew.

The chemistry between Adam and Mickey is just tremendous. Like two old friends who have such deep passion, knowledge, respect and appreciation of the music and its history. I could listen to them chat all day long. As for underrated vocalist, maybe Billy Idol could get a nod. Simon LeBon is another and his voice is as strong as ever, too.

Simon was also hot as hell! I can safely say we all had a crush on him.

What's funny about listening to Mickey talk about the Beatles at Atlanta Stadium is that Mickey sang in the stadium years later with Elvin's band as an opening act for ZZ Top's Worldwide Texas Tour!

Great interview with such a great voice. Song was big in my HS graduation year. Very cool, albeit ironic that it took so long to hit #1. Saw him in concert with Starship a number of years ago along with :38 Special & the Guess Who. Thanks for another great show. 👍🙏

Great interview! "Fool Around And Fell In Love" hit me like a brick. The song made you want to sing along. Mickey Thomas has an incredible voice. Humble beginnings to successful music legacy. Thanks for the music and the inspiration, Mickey.

I was at Winterland in SanFran the night Elvin unveiled Fooled Around. The people liked it so much Mickey sang it 2 more times for a double encore. Great song but Mickey was the key ingredient.

As soon as I hear the organ intro, I am instantly transported back to 1976, when I was listening to this on AM radio, with the ambience making it sound like it came straight from heaven.

Great interview! Fun one too. I love hearing the stories about how great songs came to be. It don’t get better than that. And what a classic. Such a good song. I don’t think anyone else could have sang that song better than Mickey. It just wouldn’t have gotten the justice it deserved. It was just meant to be sung by him imo. No doubt about it. Enjoyed this one Professor, thanks! ❤️💜💚

I remember the number 3 chart position because I used to write down the top 40s when listening to Casey Kasem. Silly Love Songs went on to be such a huge number one hit because it coincided with Paul McCartney's returned to the US on tour for the first time in 10 years. I wasn't extremely familiar with Elvin Bishop back then, although I knew the name. I just assumed that he was singing. It wasn't until years later that I found out it was Mickey Thomas, what a fantastic voice!

I saw Elvin Bishop in the late 80's in a small bar in Sunnyvale CA. When he started playing it my first thought was "I didn't know that was his song" After being fixated on the band for half the song I looked around the bar. Time pretty much stood still because no one was moving. Not even the bar staff. Everyone was fixed on Elvin and whoever the singer was at the time. Reminded me of the scene in Purple Rain, when Prince plays the title cut. The band picked up on it too. Afterward Elvin even said "yea we get to hear him sing that every night."

Since then, have watched him whenever I can ... I still watch the Fooled Around video often. As has been said, he is still underrated! Thank you for the great interview. God bless you.

In the early 80s, I saw Jefferson Starship in concert (I think the tour was for the Modern Times album). One of the highlights of the night was a performance of "Fooled Around and Fell in Love," with Grace giving a quick intro that told the background of the song. And of course, Mickey absolutely killed it! I've never stopped feeling lucky to be there for that whole concert, and that stellar performance :)

Today I learned... Mickey Thomas sang "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" and he's a South Ga boy like me. Cairo, Valdosta, and you know he's from there because he said "Kay-row" like we all do. Thank you for this!

I lived in Tallahassee and went to Cairo and Valdosta from time to time, so to hear these references…just mind blowing. I had no idea but I’m happy for Mickey. Elvin Bishop’s/Mickey Thomas’ Fooled Around was in full radio play back then. Searing lead but yeah Mickey made the tune. The gratitude to Gideon is awesome too. Thanks!

WOW, Professor. You really nailed it with this one. Mickey is relaxed and articulate, your research was in depth, the clips you interspersed when mentioning other bands were high-quality: I give you ten out of ten! Coincidentally, I stumbled across the Midnight Special version of this song about a month ago & have been loving it even more than when first released.

I love how great songs of our youth can immediately take us back in time when we were young and our life story was just starting. THIS was that song and year for me. Of course, it involved a girl who was the love of my life. I’m 67 now but I’m 19 all over again when this great song is played and I close my eyes.

Funny, I had no idea Mickey was the vocalist on this song, but I have always loved it. One of my favorites he sings is his cover of "Dream a Little Dream" from that soundtrack, particularly the duet version with Mel Torme. That probably reveals my age a bit. 😂
