The exploration of gender & sexual dynamics in abo is pretty interesting imo, it's like if you put real life gender issues and put em on steroids, making things more complicated by adding 3 dynamics (abo) on top of our genders (for now I've mostly seen combinations of abo dynamics with female or male but rarely non-binary, hell abo yuri is alrdy rare enough as it is). How someone's dynamics affect how society treats them. Alphas & omegas mirrored men & women's struggle irl but now there's an additional betas' struggles with being treated as common, ordinary & less valuable. Then add again with the mixture of our genders, how alpha men & alpha women will have different experience. Then there's the struggle of that feral animalistic nature of abo, the heats & ruts that biologically can make someone lose control. So much angst potential! Unfortunately I see more exploration of this in fanfics compare to manga. Also can't deny, the smut is hot lol.

Funny thing is these hierarchies are well known cuz of wolves but it's been disproved multiple times wolves do not have an alpha, beta, etc. in the wild or at least the way people explain it is misleading. The guy that popularized the idea tried really hard trying to stop people from using it actually but it spread too quickly. It's basically become like an ingrained false myth thing people still just assume is a thing. Edit: I never said there are no natural forming hierarchies. Even wolves have one it's just that the popular idea of how it works is just wrong or at least a misleading take on it. They're just families. As for the time where someone mentioned alpha training tactics on dogs well I'm not super informed on such a thing. But doing a light search for research I found a lot of stuff saying alpha training is shaky at best. Dogs are super different compared to wolves now and the aggressive dominant alpha idea for wolves is, like I said, misrepresented. Dogs in the wild have nothing similar to an "alpha dog" and, like I said, from what I've read it's generally agreed upon alpha training is shaky at best and at worst just causes guardians to mistreat their dogs. If you really just want to borrow from how wolves work then at that point you should just treat your dogs as if they were your child since wolf packs are just families with the parents being the leaders. Being rarely competitive. Nonetheless I am not an expert dog trainer and all I did was some light reading so ignore this last bit on training if you want 🤷♂️

I studied the ABO genre to ascertain the differences between the writing styles of ABO fic and other erotic fanfiction subcultures, using ao3 as my source site, for a total of two years while better developing my writing style. I tried not to focus on the authors themselves, or the, uh, fanbase-- instead taking a look at individual fics and what they had to offer, and the results were actually really fascinating from a literary perspective, at least from the pov of someone breaking down the piece instead of partaking. I've seen a lot of fics that were stand ins for gender exploration, (I've found that these are mostly self insert or y/n) and I've seen a few beautifully crafted fics that read like allegories to the regression of man back into beast via the deterioration of society; how the monotony of everyday life can make someone feel caged and liable to break free in a feral, hormone driven fit. I've read power fantasies, (either hinging on being a strong alpha that has control over their living situation and security in their societal positions-- or an omega with little to no worries and someone who is always there to take care of and love them) as well as other escapist omegaverse media. I'm particularly fond of the more meta ABO fics that acknowledge secondary genders and the societal roles that fit them, and subvert the narrative, having the story normalize the Alpha/Beta/Omega populations in a way that most writers would normalize regular genders. I know the omegaverse is a dumb erotica genre, but exploring it as a form of societal escapism or self expression is, and will always be, fascinating to me.

@@loturzelrestaurant Ok, so I've watched the video-- and I find myself agreeing to a lot of her comments and observations. I like how she listed and then debunked flat earther's beliefs, and then got into their psychology to better explain where those beliefs come from. Personally, as someone who's grown up in the American south, flat earth mentality comes from a mix of scientific illiteracy and distrust of authority (as said in the video) but also an unnerving, unrelenting need to understand. This ties back into scientific illiteracy in a sense, but I often find that flat-earthers and like-minded people have an _inability_ to comprehend certain subjects, (of course, the teachers are at fault as well) and when they leave the lesson with no questions answered, they set to find out on their own, which often leads to a simpler, more archaic conclusion. As they are more predisposed to certain mindsets, potential flat earthers find themselves falling down a rabbithole that can turn very, very personal. Thusly, an attack on the flat earth theory is an attack on the flat earther, and they feel threatened and enraged by it. It's no help that other people belittle them for their misguided beliefs-- as it often further cements them into flat eather's head. They start questioning why everyone else believes in a globe, and/or they get connected with other flat earthers. They start to believe in government coverups and other conspiracy theories (like the pac man effect, which is baffling to most people, but reasonable to flat earthers with a certain amount of time under their belt.) By now, they've already indulged in this theory enough for it to become a part of their identity, and admitting defeat is not only admitting to wasted time (and an admission of wrongness) but it is also rejecting a community that took you in when everyone around you was judging and harsh. Now, the Globeheads become the people to mock, (personally I think this is a form of projection--) they become sheep-- controlled by the government, believing everything they're told; not doing their own research. Sometimes it becomes a "Holier than Thou" scenario (sometimes even literally in the particularly theological) where the flat earther feels a sense of accomplishment and superiority from their beliefs, which in their mind are entirely correct and justified with hand reared, hard earned evidence. Now, most of these observations come from a personal place, and I know I haven't touched on the video much-- but I can restate that I agree with most of her points: my favorite being that flat earthers call themselves truth seekers, but in my added opinion-- they're a different kind of truth seeker. I agree with what she said, that they're unscientifically working from a claim and going backwards, and I agree that their echo chamber is dangerous-- but I'll also personally add that their echo chamber comes from years of familial culture, ones that often involved a distrust of authority and a lack of understanding right from the start. Flat earthers are corrupted, hurting scientific minds that should've been caught by teachers and scholars, before they were caught by other conspiracy theorists. Wonderful video ^^ I should watch her content more often. I hope this comment is what you wanted :)

I've read some omegaverse stuff throughout my life. Some are BAD, some are okay, and the rare few are good. Like, I'm currently reading a webcomic where it is in the ABO universe, and everyone has a 'second gender' (the alpha, beta, or omega), and it's actually talks about how forced pairings are bad, and the characters are trying to make it illegal as there is a lot of violence steaming around the omega people, no matter how much omega they truly are. It's actually really good. It also brings in the subject of 'what happens if a member of a pair dies or rejects them?' And how people mutilate their bodies from omegas to something else as they are scared that they'll be forced into a life they don't want. Over all, the omegaverse thing is 99% fetish stuff, gross stuff, etc. However there are a couple good ones in the mix, so that's nice

Professor, I am still very confused about the idea concerning the topic of “Bara”. What is it? Etymology and origin?
@Scyclo3 жыл бұрын
I mean most people assume bara is just massive muscles and dicks but thats not the case. Bara, while generally most characters are in fact muscular, isn't always just massive muscles. There are bara artists that make their characters look more real, like mentaiko (ito) for example, and while yes allot of bara is hard-core stuff, I've read some bara that actually has a good story and plot. Bara is bara because most of the time it shows more hard-core h scenes, but a bara doujin is probably the most accurate thing you can read to real gay romance, at least that's what a survey taken revealed apparently. That being said there is more to gay romance than sex but most people assume bara = sex only but thats not the case.
@h0td0gwater3 жыл бұрын
@@Scyclo I thought bara fell under the category of by-men-for-men which is why it is distinguished from yaoi, however i cannot find any sources to support this claim. Also I've noticed a lot of bara is also quite gory and has a lot of murder/crime/mystery themes. Source is anecdotal, though.
@LautaroArgentino3 жыл бұрын
I think the word comes from Japanese. Bara means rose.
@genehen64953 жыл бұрын
@@h0td0gwater It generally is by-men-for-men, but not entirely. Its more common for gay men to be into larger or muscular men, after all. Id say Bara is simply porn, romance or other indulgences in larger and (typically) older body types with more masculine features, like facial/body hair. (also known as "gei komi", as bara can be also used as a slur (think along the lines of "poofter", "fag" or "fruit") and some artists prefer not to be associated with it.) Debu (fat and soft), gachidebu (fat and muscular), gachimuchi (muscular but still soft and curved) and gacchiri (very muscular) are all very common body types. Works will often feature middle aged or even older men showing signs of their age - softened skin, balding, white hair. (Though younger characters are still commonly present, especially the more muscular you go. There seems to have been a recent sway towards far more slender figures of younger males recently, or at least that's what I've observed.) Alot of bishounen (beautiful slender boy) yaoi is also written by gay men also, so the distinction between "written by women for women" and "by men for men" is hazy at best between bara and yaoi - both fall under gei komi. For western audiences, who only get a trickle of this stuff anyway, the distinction mainly fits and aids in filtering interests - but it just doesn't work as well in Japan. (A more substantial distinction in Japan can be "mens love" rather than the more commonly bishounen "boys love".) There is ALOT of violent or BDSM storytelling in bara porn work, but there are also alot of more wholesome stories. One of my favourites is Jiraiya's "Aogeba Toutoshi", which is about a recently divorced schoolteacher being visited by his ex students - one of which has a crush on him. In the teachers lonely depression he lets his adult ex-student "do what he likes" for a bit - before suddenly realizing its not what he wants and not for him, and the student understands - his respect for his teacher, who helped him come to terms with being gay, comes way before any sexual desires he may have. Very very wholesome, while also fulfilling a common gay fantasy of "being able to have fun with my straight crush" - without disrespecting the straight man's sexuality. Cleverly written porn ;) Anyway, that's my rant. I'm a straight woman who just really likes the male body - not just when its as slim, young and hairless as possible. I wish more of this stuff had female characters... oh well. I hope this... helps? someone? I guess...?
@Scyclo3 жыл бұрын
@@h0td0gwater that is also indeed true and its also the reason why bara is the closest thing to actual gay relationships you'll get because its by men for men Edit the person above me explained it better

@mycenaeangal93123 жыл бұрын
Oh tell me
@Robofan9983 жыл бұрын
@@mycenaeangal9312 To quote directly from the Wikipedia article for clowns: "The white clown, or clown blanc in French, is a sophisticated character, as opposed to the clumsy Auguste. The two types are also distinguished as the sad clown (blanc) and happy clown (Auguste). The Auguste face base makeup color is a variation of pink, red, or tan rather than white. Features are exaggerated in size, and are typically red and black in color. The mouth is thickly outlined with white (called the muzzle) as are the eyes. Appropriate to the character, the Auguste can be dressed in either well-fitted garb or a costume that does not fit - oversize or too small, either is appropriate. Bold colors, large prints or patterns, and suspenders often characterize Auguste costumes. The Auguste character-type is often an anarchist, a joker, or a fool. He is clever and has much lower status than the whiteface. Classically the whiteface character instructs the Auguste character to perform his bidding. The Auguste has a hard time performing a given task, which leads to funny situations. Sometimes the Auguste plays the role of an anarchist and purposefully has trouble following the whiteface's directions. Sometimes the Auguste is confused or is foolish and makes errors less deliberately. The contra-auguste plays the role of the mediator between the white clown and the Auguste character. He has a lower status than the white clown but a higher status than the Auguste. He aspires to be more like the white clown and often mimics everything the white clown does to try to gain approval. If there is a contra-auguste character, he often is instructed by the whiteface to correct the Auguste when he is doing something wrong. " While Blanc-Auguste dynamics are the only dynamics within clown/clown performances, It does bear a striking resemblance to the aforementioned ABO/Omegaverse dynamics, right down to the fact that The Blanc is often portrayed in a higher social standing than that of the Auguste. Now this isn't a perfect comparison, but as an academic I find it an interesting parallel that demands more research and attention within the academic community.
