Honestly, I just see this as a next step in entertainment, combining multiple forms of media. An older example might be narrations and films, and how they were invented separately, but eventually were combined to create an even more immersive experience.

Although I agree that 2D>3D, 3D has some advantages in certain streaming situations such as dancing, concerts and especially ring fit adventure streams which gives the viewer a more complete experience that can't be found with any other method

In the case of vtubers at hololive they can make 3d models for theses situations so they can use both 2d and 3d models in their streams

Both 2d and 3d are needes imo. I agree with that "vtuber" guy on the screen talking bout how 2d captures the pure essence of the character, so its a good reminder of what role they are playing. But once 3d comes into play, a bit of the character fades away, but what compensates this is that they get to freely move around and interact as they try their best to maintain the role. Like how Nene repetitively slapped that poor camera man's face.

As a 2D guy, my only complaint with 3D is how its limited to in-studio streams. The 3D quality for most company vtubers have become quite good over the past years but the home 3D models still seem very scuffed. Buggy arms and eyes being common among home3D models across the industry from what I've seen, with Kizuna Ai being the exception

@@cloverus to add to this, even if vtubers are sitting down, 3D can still have benefits with detecting the tilting of the head, leaning forwards and backwards, etc. The charm and life of an anime girl is quite hard to capture with 3D, Vshojo as a case study. On the other hand, the 3D hololive models are well designed and the loss of life is quite minimal. I think with development of skill and technology, the global amount of life lost in 3d anime models will decrease overtime. In summary, both methods of vtubing have their advantages and disadvantages: 2D models are simple, require little effort to set up and contain the soul and personality of the persona, bringing an immersive experience for the viewer meanwhile 3D models can be used in a variety of situations, allows full body movement of the avatar however they cannot fully capture the life of an anime character and in some cases; they can look souless

The VShojo team and their indie friends have ended up with some great 3D models though. Girl_dm was brought up, and whoever designed her model did an equally great job with Snuffy's first model post the raccoon re-debut, as well as the one Nyanners got a month or two back. Silvervale has always had one of my favorites thanks its quality tracking, and a big part of the appeal of Zentreya's streams is the body language she can convey with hers as she interacts with chat. Not to say her 2D isn't good as well, but the experience isn't quite the same.

Kson onair - one of the only 2.5D vtubers. Japanese with American thighs, might be related to a certain dragon. Fluent in English.

Professor, this in-depth analysis of vtubers has been extremely well done and I agree with most statements you have made, especially with your points about the differences between English and Japanese vtubers. Though, I couldn't help but speculate that English-speaking vtubers would have the same appeal to people that speak neither of those languages (The Hispanic community for example) that Japanese vtubers have to the Anglo community.

The 2d vs 3d argument really comes down to the Uncanny Valley chart (Look it up) where it almost looks real, but isn't, which makes it unsettling and creepy. Some examples are RThots (Realistic Roblox Avatars), EA cursed character models, and Ex-Arm Anime (* gags *).

I think most of the Indonesian vtubers are actually TOO fluent to qualify for what professor is talking about. Maybe Anya or some of the NijiID would qualify but otherwise they all speak english pretty perfectly.
