🔥 There’s one skill that separates great IT Project Managers from everyone else-project tailoring. Most project managers get stuck trying to learn every new tool and process out there. They dive deep into theories but still struggle to deliver projects on time and within budget. It’s frustrating. The truth is, great project managers don’t try to do it all-they focus on tailoring simple processes and tools that work best for their team and projects. That’s what creates transparency, predictability, and results. But here’s the thing-tailoring isn’t just guessing what might work. It’s about knowing three critical components: 1) Understanding project management on a deeper level. 2) Knowing exactly what to tailor. 3) Applying it effectively in real companies with real people. That’s why I created the Professional Development Plan for IT Project Managers-to help you master project tailoring and finally become the project manager who delivers every time, no matter the challenge. ✅ Click the link below to get your development plan now and take the next step toward mastering project management. itpmschool.com/get-plan?

Great video. Just a note or two on daily PM tasks: I don't find it necessary to meet everyday with the team and owners. Most owners are extremely busy with other day-to-day tasks that generate revenue for the business. I always send out bi-weekly status reports (Powerpoint format usually with updates on costs, resources, schedules, action items, etc.). And, I always put high visibility notes in the email body (like off schedule, overrun costs, etc). If the project is shorter in duration or if the stakeholders want/need the information more readily available, I will issue status reports in a weekly manner. The most important thing I do everyday is ensure that my emails are allocated correctly. Your brain is made for execution, not storing information. Every email is tagged into a project folder or tagged as follow-up. If I need to follow-up, I add it to my daily notebook under each project. If I need to speak to someone, I add it to my daily notebook under each project. I always send out minutes from every meeting. At the end of the day, I go through my daily notebook (Microsoft OneNote is perfect for this) and proceed to mark items off the list as I complete them. This allows me to manage multiple projects at one time. We don't use PM software at all.

Your approach to daily PM tasks, including efficient communication, regular status reports, and meticulous organization, is commendable. Leveraging tools like Microsoft OneNote for task management and email organization is a practical alternative to PM software, especially for managing multiple projects simultaneously. Your emphasis on clear communication and accountability contributes to successful project execution.

Hi Dmytro! Just wanted to say thanks a second time for this great video; I'm having my project management exam for my course this Friday and the Thursday afterwards for part B It's a 7 hour exam in total, with 4 hours for part A, which is dedicated to creating Project initiation documents, and then 3 hours for part B which is dedicated towards a project checkpoint report and a performance review email for the end of the project. When I first started this part of my course, I understood the concepts of project planning (as they are all quite logical and understandable) but I didn't really appreciate the bigger picture or know how to put it all together, and there would be many concepts that I'd simply fail to think about. Due to this, I was terrified for my exam. After watching this video a few times over though, it all started to come together in my mind, and I truly think I understand what it means to be a project manager and what would be expected of me. And thanks to that, to your video and your hints and tips, I'm pretty confident that I can pass this exam, and on top of that, I've developed a personal interest and enthusiasm for this topic and part of my course. This has truly meant a lot to me, thanks. Edit: If I ever fancy getting into the world of project management, or have the funds just to explore it all out of my own curiosity, I will definitely seek out your course and videos.

@@ITProjectManagers Hi! I've finished both parts of the exam now. The first part I ran out of time on, but I managed to get the Gantt chart, resource plan, and cost plan done, and I did well on the smart targets, stakeholder analysis, risk analysis, background information, and communication plan. I did do my cost plan, resource plan, and Gantt chart on Excel though, and I later found out that they would be converted into PDF files which... Well... Produced less than favourable results. My checkpoint report in part B was pretty good throughout, but without my Gantt chart and stuff being so hard to read I may have gotten the dates wrong for many sections. The information I put in each section was very thorough though. As for the performance review email where I needed to reflect on the project's performance, and my own performance, through reflection on resource management, task delegation, quality management, project management methods used, risk management, communication management, and how requirements were met, lessons learnt etc... That went really well! In fact all of the things I listed I discussed in great detail and remembered off the top of my head, so my revision really paid off there! So overall it's a mixed bag, but I'm proud of what I did achieve. Edit: Also we were doing the whole exam on an word pad... And their version of Excel felt just as clunky. So... That was also a challenge.

Finished PMP, and this video is basically a summary of what is taught. I understand why the video is saying that PMP won't make you a good manager, so that he can make money selling a course for $297 that is basically the same as a PMP course. By the way, you can find a project management course online for free (what I used to pass PMP).

Hey, Tom, Congratulations on getting the PMP! Great achievement. Yes, PMP won't make you a good manager, especially in the IT industry. At the same time, I totally agree that a person can learn project management online for free. It's will take more time and they'll repeat a lot of typical mistakes. My courses come from my practical experience to help you become a great PM without trials and errors. Great sales pitch. I just watched out of curiosity to better work with project managers who often are sometimes incompetent. like one of out 5 can actually understand what the project goal is, and it impacts how they can direct things... but the other people on the project can help. it always comes down to learn how to work with them, how to supply the right bits to the project manager so he can integrate them well. So doesn't make sense to book but good to listen, and again, nicely explained why it would make sense to just learn from you.

If you’re a sales donkey for some reason no matter the industry there is friction. The role of a project manager forces us to think different and contrary to what we are taught not all of them are customer focused but can be profit, politically (company politics), deadline, etc. focused instead.

I’m new to the video and project management. I’m not a dedicated Project Manager but considering adding the skill to my résumé for my role in manufacturing. Would you recommend the CAPM?
@ITProjectManagers9 ай бұрын
It depends. If you want to have a certificate on your resume, it won't add much extra credit for you. PMP may do that at some point, but you need 3-5 years of hands-on experience. However, if you want to learn project management, I recommend taking my course. You'll learn a lot of practical skills that you can apply throughout your whole career.

I see. Thank you for the prompt and insightful response. I’ll definitely consider your course if I decide to pursue this further.

Wonderful video! May I know which Project management software you recommend?
@ITProjectManagers2 жыл бұрын
It’s a complex question, Clark. If you want to have a PM software for yourself, I would go with ClickUp or Merlin Project (Mac OS only). But keep in mind that a project manager usually doesn’t "bring" PM software with themselves into an organization. Organization should provide you with one that works well with their environment. In the real world, 99% of time I use enterprise level solution like Azure DevOps or JIRA.

You’ll land a PM job sooner or later. Just don’t stop applying and going for interview until you get a job offer.

Just whanted to now, What Project Management tool(s) do you reccommend? Specially for IT Security & Infrastructure Project. MS Project doesn't address our requirements. Specially Dashboarts and Automation.

Nice video and thank you. Have you ever done Data Analytics project?

I did several project that required moving, transforming, and analyzing data in huge amounts. But it wasn't the goal of the project. It's the data for the product we built.

Hello, when you say the project manager communicates the most time, how is he going to do a performance. Normally the project manager is the person responsible for the fulfillment what he is doing most himself with some support. Like a project in the construction planning. If not how is the huge amount of knowledge and data transfered to the fulfillment team?
@ITProjectManagers Жыл бұрын
Please correct me if misunderstood you question. Ideally, a project manager doesn't perform work related to creating product or service of the project. Project manager implements the project with hands and brains for team members and stakeholders. The only thing a PM cannot delegate is project management approach and leadership strategy. So, in case a project plan is one of the deliverables, then a project manager brings his knowledge of project management processes and tools need for planning. However, the data and input he takes to build the plan should come from team and stakeholders. There are some exceptions, where a PM should perform some project management activities solely based on him own experience and knowledge. But it's rare. Moreover, I would still try finding additional external expertise.
