Nice to see it all running smoothly. Got to say one of my takeaways was that you also probably want to think carefully about what exhaust you fit. Other than weight it sounds like the bike would probably be better for pipes closer to the OEM design.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Not at all mate, this is the exhaust fitted, it's way better performing than the standard system, way more free flowing, and above all else, as you said, it weighs a fraction of the standard system... and the engine is now mapped perfectly to work with it! Thank you for watching.

That's a great breakdown of the how's and why's, Del. After your last vid I dug out my dyno run from 2014. Bearing in mind I'm still on carbs and the bike had already done 93,000 miles, the V4 (and you know how I love my V4's) was missing just .8bhp from stock. I know that all dyno's run different but even in that ball park, after 17yrs, that wasn't a result to be sniffed at. Was never gonna get near that with my carbtune :o) Look forward to see what's coming next. 130+ lbft across almost the whole rev range is insane!...

Do you think the throttle restrictions were put in place to protect the transmission from torque overload? It's not uncommon for shaft driven bikes to have catastrophic failure in the final driveline. Probably due to less torsional compliance / damping.
@Moonfleet4116 күн бұрын
You certainly make a logical point mate, why make an engine that can wreck it's own transmission, rather than just build it strong enough? I'd say it's more to protect innocent, inexperienced consumers and make the bike more user friendly... either way, I believe the 300bhp supercharged bikes seem to do ok so I'm not sure they all wreck their transmissions... I believe it was just a few instances and it was a spring in the final drive that broke... apparantly!

You're obviously blessed with affordable dyno services where you live. The last time I bought time on a dyno in my area was when I had done a TPI conversion on a Gen-1 GM small block (Tuned Port Injection from a 1991 Camaro IROC on a 327ci small block out of a totaled 1965 Vette). In 2002 it cost me $140/half hour on a rolling dyno. Prior to getting time on the dyno, I had brought the engine into fair tune by data-logging under the widest variety of driving conditions I could muster and analyzing the knock sensor inputs and adjusting the ETC (Electronic Timing Curve) accordingly (GM's Block Mode Learning built into their OBDI logic made the fuel maps almost self-mapping). Of course, before I could attempt ANY real tuning on a GM OBDI ECU I first had to desolder the EPROM from the MEMCAL module in the ECU, and replace it with a 24-pin socket for a 256K flash memory chip (EPROMS can go "flakey" after merely one re-flash, whereas a flash memory chip can be re-flashed over and over again indefinitely without fear of ruining/damaging the chip). But I digress. It sounds like you had a great day at the tuners, and it yielded some very positive results. Now get out and ride that beast before your weather turns on you! 👍
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing that Paul, that's a huge amount of work and shows how today's modern equipment makes it so much easier to set vehicles up to run right.. and it's not all about more power and bigger numbers.. i just wanted the engine running right, and making the power it should, and reasonable fuel economy, with all the fluff and fuss over the envoronment these days, you would think the powers that be would maybe think about subsidising engine mapping, it would probably do more to save the planet than making a million batteries a day for cars that won't last ten years without needing a new one... Don't get me started..lol!

Good one Del: As you say, the AFR is the thing to get right to avoid any possible damage from lean running resulting from a high flow air filter or freer flowing exhaust. The power/torque improvements will then result in a much nicer bike to ride.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Very much so mate.. it's so docile and calm to ride now, not scray or unpredictable.. just clean, smooth silky power right from idle..! and yeah, great peace of mind too knowing the AFR is right in the zone..!
@tommylitchfield3450Ай бұрын
TwinPotMan, You nailed it there! My current scooter had the stock intake and exhaust and was SUPER lean across the board for emissions, even though it was made in 06. Even with no catalytic converter from the factory, the mufflers themselves were SUPER hot, all the time. Just drilling out the center of the stock baffles and going up 3 sizes on the pilot jet made a giant difference in engine heat, fuel mileage, and power. In stock form, the engine was incapable of pulling in top gear on a level road when shifted at the minimum speed listed in the Manual. You had to wind it up almost 10 mph more than the lowest listed speed or it would lug itself to death. Not good for ANYTHING, including the environment, since you had to use more fuel simply to get into cruising speed. With a high flowing aftermarket exhaust and good air cleaner, plus re-routing the crankcase vapors out of the intake, my scoot has never been happier

Good question, it's something you can google and read about...basically Torque starts to decrease because the engine cannot breathe as well as revs rise. Due to the engines speed, the cylinder does not fill with air as well. imagine yourself, sprinting fast, you couldn't tow a heavy log along behind you...but if you walk.. it's easy ! not fully explained.. but there's lots online about it if you're curious mate !

Good video and it's good to see the Rocket living up to its potential. I do have one gripe though. You refer to the AFR (Air Fuel Ratio) as a percentage. It isn't. It will of course relate to a percentage, but the number you are quoting is a ratio. So an AFR of 14 is 14 parts air to 1 part fuel. In percentage terms it means that the fuel is a 15th of the total, so about 6.66%.

Sometimes air box shape or even cam profile can cause little dips in the Rev range that can’t be sorted unless you change those parts. Sometimes on high tps runs you can also get a bit of a dip low in the revs due to the sudden in rush of air & it takes a split second for injectors to catch up.

@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Well thats a tail of two halves.. like you say, now it's running correctly, the air fuel ratio is right at all throttle openings, i can cruise along on a fraction of throttle in top gear at barely above tickover, which will mean great fuel consumption.... but on the other hand, it's fully re-restricted, and can now run wide open in every gear if i want to... and that will obviously drink a lot more fuel.. so it's all about how you ride it.!

Auto moderator indeed mate, I seem to be battling against it all the time, comments aren't removed, they're held for review and sometimes with comments flooding in, I don't get time to review them all and click them on... there's plnty of hate and bad language rolling through these days, don't know what's got in to some people on the net, their adult filter seems to have slipped! Rest assured, all comments are read and appreciated, public or otherwise.

@@Moonfleet41 that's good to know, thanks for letting me know. You can disregard the other two if you like. Cheers mate. Yeah it's such a shame there's so much hate on the internet nowadays, people think they can act how they like because they're hiding behind anonymity. What is the world coming to.

Incredible change. Seems factory just throw in the chips and let the dealers make the money. Glad it worked out in your favor. Restriction is something else. Must be big challenge.
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Big change indeed mate, you don't really need more power from these bikes, just release the ppower they actually have, taking away the strangulation is all that's required, I'd challenge anyone to ride these to their limit on the public roads!
@Goldwing1500riderАй бұрын
Lol… 😂…. You? I think I pass!! Wink… I wouldn't mind riding one. Just to get the feeling of the ride!! 😊

Interestingly, how do your final figures of Torque and BHP compare with the Rocket 3's original specification when new?
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
As i answered to someone who already asked this..Chatting with John over that, as he tunes a lot of Triumphs, he tells me they only quote "crank" figures, and also in 'PS' rather than BHP.. so not really very easy to compare.. but these are Rear Wheel figures. .there's the weight of the shaft, the final drive gears, and the back wheel is over 25kg in weight by itself.. so there's a lot of power sap from the drive train. which means these figure are most certainly up on the factory original..!

@@Moonfleet41 Must get my Velocette LE on the dyno. Not dissimilar to your Rocket 3. Water cooled, shaft drive, flat twin with a heady 8 bhp on tap...........................lol

Hi, thanks for sharing, enjoyed the detail. In comparison what was the Triumph advertised Torque/BHP when new?? 🚀

Great video Del, Do you think you would get the the same results without the power commander?
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
Thanks mate, the ecu can be programmed direct on the rocket 3 & John also does direct ecu mapping on many other models. he derestricted the secondary butterfly’s on the bike via the ecu direct but used the pc5 to custom map the fuel map as it’s easier & wanted to show the tuning link software working. Hope that answers your question?

Can the ECU be programmed directly instead of via a Power Commander thereby saving the expense of buying a Power Commander ?

Drop John a line on the link maybe mate.. he's more qualified to answer that one..!

Interesting comparisson.. the SB is 70Kg lighter with less power and less torque.. so it's be an interetsing drag race.. but i can't ride them both at once.. so i guess ill never know..lol!

Anyone doing head porting and upgrade for rocket 3 in UK?
@Moonfleet41Ай бұрын
TTS possibly, but they also do a Supercharger for the Rocket 3.. which makes all the faff of conventinal engine tuning rather pointless.. !

You are by far the absolute BEST EXAMPLE of how things should be done, even when you are not the active mechanic doing the work. I watch a few other channels and the one I love to hate is "Just Rolled In". Such examples of the most foolish and stupid and so wrong maintenance and/or just complete incompetence of car/truck drivers. You really should get an award on how you are so good at what you do. A real absolute blessing to watch and so enjoyable. Plus, I really like your selection of MCs you have and work on. Thank you again for your excellent channel. 🙂🙂🙂
