William Davis; I have an 8 3/4 with sure lock. It had a leaking left wheel seal and the yoke seal was weeping also. Had a mechanic replace both wheel seals and bearings and the yoke seal. He said the brake shoes were OK and he just cleaned them. I had control issues when braking so I expected the rear left brake shoes were not good. Pulled the drums and yep, the hubs and shoes were "greasy". I noticed that with the trans in neutral, the rear axles turn normally in the forward direction and very hard to turn in the rear direction. Is this normal? Thanks, Tom.

That's a 741 case are soild pinion spacers OEM? For a 741. I take the ring gear and place it on a induction cook top and set it for 200° ring gear slips right on with gloves on of course.

It's splitting hairs but I was taught to use a dial indicator on the contact point of the ring gear to the pinion. I'm sure that 273 will pep up going up to a 3:91. The great thing about the 8 3/4 is you can "quick change" the gear ration by sliding out the axles & dropping the hog head.
@Chevyv8man1
@Chevyv8man1 4 жыл бұрын
Michael, You're right, you have to use the contact points or the ratio in size will through off your readings by a lot.

I heat the ring gear with locating studs in a boiling pan of water and dropped the sure grip on to it no problem. That was a 1975 9 1/4" I fit with Direction Connection 4.30 gears. It was great in my Fury ex cop car. Your Lawn Dart will be that much more of a neck snapper with good gears.

Just got a 741 think it has 267 gears, im putting together a la 360 350 hp, 727, 1 ton 47 dodge panel truck, wanting to take it 2000 miles next year, want it to be able to squeal tires and cruise too, what set up would you recommend in my 741? Thanks for video
@ScottsSpeedShop
@ScottsSpeedShop Жыл бұрын
Depending on your tire size, I think something in the 3.23 range would suit ya fine. A 3.23 gear ratio is based on a 26 inch tall tire, so if you run a 28, then you'll have to scale the ratio accordingly. It's really pretty simple stuff at its core, but if you need anymore assistance, reply to this comment or email me chargerjezebel70@yahoo.com

I'm needing a sure grip unit or should I stick with my peg leg set up for my 8-3/4 489 case . it is like yours a peg leg but mine has 3:91 gears and want to swap over to 3:55 . ive never changed out gears before . would be great if some had a reasonable sure grip unit laying around for sale ??? mine has the same play in it . paid 125.00 for the 489 . my grand dads always used gasoline to clean parts and nuts and bolts in an open air environment! the case will be going into my project 65 dart

If you add about six or seven drops of transmission fluid into the air hole of your smaller air impact guns they probably could have loosened the pinion but lol. It’s a little trick I used to use when I was working at the dealership.

slapper bars on a mopar? use superstock springs and a adjustable pinion snubber...
@ScottsSpeedShop
@ScottsSpeedShop 3 жыл бұрын
Super stock springs are a waste of money, that came straight from the mouth of the legend Herb McCandless, his family all use stock leaf springs and cal-tracs now-a-days. My Dart has a pinion snubber, i just leave the slapper bars on for the look

I heard you can use a short bed dodge truck drive shaft in a mopar car like your dart and my 65 dart ? it has to be cut down but suppost to be stout to use in a v8 car like ours? does my 498 case from a dodge 3/4 ton truck have that big U-joint piece?

Factory spec in my Mopar book said .010 to .016. Rear end is in the car now and it is working great. No howling or any of the bad sounds. Plus if the center chunk was that sensitive that .005 will cause harm, it'd be a pretty awful rear end. I aint arguing just stating my opinion.
