I'm freshening up a field find 65 273 GT.Surprising little car someone back in the day loved her.She sat over 20 years.

had a 1965 formula s,i bought it to just drive in 1969,it was dull,i installed fenderwell headers on it,it gained incredible power,changed many carbs,nothing would make it gain anymore power,then i took it apart because on the 10.5 engine they have circlips on the pistons for pin retention,i bored the engine next oversize and honed it my self,blueprinted the 273 it responded by winning a lot of street races,the 273 cranks is lighter with floating rods and reversing the pistons side to side,it would rev 7200 easily,due to the smaller lighter high compression pistons it turned into a screamer,it turned 12.20 's all day with 410 7 1/4 suregrip 904 completely rebuilt with best parts 5 to 1 lever it would smoke buicks pontiacs oldmosbiles and novas and yes even mustangs,if you didn't catch me by the time i hit second gear,you were done,this engine is weird it only responds to port velocity improvements,and the one thing it loves is fenderwell raised port headers,under the chassis won't get it,run 112 octane thru it once,advance the timing to 38 degrees enjoy,im building another one right now,found the cuda body,see ya in the streets

My Dad's Dad passed away when I was 3, I never really got to meet the man, the myth, and the legend that contributed the most to my gene pool. The Grandpa that visited technically adopted my Mom, but I love Grandpa Joe, he has always been someone I have looked up to.

My dad died back in May this year. We never got along great, but in 2015 he bought the twin to his 64 Sport Fury with a 426 wedge. He sold his first one a year before I was born, so I never saw it but heard about it. We couldn't find his original car, so when he got its twin and it broke I got the chance to work on it with him. A bolt hole stripped and the alternator fell off and took out the radiator when he was driving it 1500 miles home the week he bought it. Dad and I got along great while I fixed that for him, its one of the very few good memories I have with him. Another is him taking his 36 Plymouth coupe street rod, my older brother drove the 64, a sister drove the 70 AAR Cuda clone, I drove my 65 GTO, the other brothers drove their 63 Dart convertible and 68 Mustang on a 600mile cruise with 400 other old cars around Nebraska. He left me the Cuda, but I'd rather have more opportunities to actually get along with him.

If you get a wide sharpening stone you should be able to flatten that thermostat housing and keep it all flat to seal up

If I was ever in the position to purchase either Jezeble or the Yard Dart. I think it would have to be the Yard Dart, don't get me wrong they're both desirable vehicles but you see less Darts around and besides the Dart has great body lines. But I know I'll never be that lucky.

Long duration cams are great for a short stroke motor. Keeps the powerband in the upper RPMS Where that motor likes it. Now all ya need is some 4.56s or something close.

There were two 4-bbl 273's, one with 235 HP, had a .425" lift cam, 10.5 compression. There was another rare one, 275 HP. From what I remember it had a .50x" lift Racer Brown cam from the factory, about what you put in. The 235 HP one, aka "Charger 273" in Darts, or "Commando 273" in Barracudas, were good driving engines, though quite lopey at stop signs and lights. You had to shift into neutral so your vision wouldn't blur.

Grand scheme of things, if I was to do it all over again on the Fairmont...I'd probably still keep my 2bbl, but I would have sprung for a camshaft. The dart sounds tremendous now!

Thanks brother, ultimately a cam would have been an awesome upgrade along with a 4 barrel carb, but with all of that, comes tuning, breaking a cam in, yadda yadda yadda. I think the Fairmont will run great with the upgrades you did, and you also did something a normal builder wouldn't be able to resist doing. Which is going nuts and changing everything!

more people need to be edjucated on cams. the lift doesn not determine streetability. its the duration/lsa/icl and intake valve timing. the cam in my 400 is the 268/276 voodoo. 494/513 lift seems like a lot, but its only 226/234 duration @.050 on a 110lsa. perfectly streetable, even on my stock doo-doo comp 400.(maybe its not dookie, considering it was apparently a police pursuit package engine or something.

Hey Jed I never liked silicone to seal up anything. I like using form a gasket aircraft SEALER. I have sealed up some leaky shit with it. It works for me time and time again.

Yard dart is a b perfect name. I remember the brand JART when I was a kid. many of friends feet were impaled by them including my neighbors moms foot i nailed to her driveway with a jart

I think we nailed the cam!! 4spd and 3.91s or even 4.10s will be night and day faster. Matter of fact, I bought a '68 Dart with a 400BB in it and 4.30 gears and I put a mild 318 Magnum engine in it (270HR hydraulic roller cam-mild!) with an A-engine 727 and it was a hoot on the street. No problem running 65mph long distances with 27" tires turning 3000rpm+. The short stroke loves it (same 3.31" stroke as a 273). It would have been faster with a 904 but I was too cheap to buy a longer driveshaft and 3000/3500 stall for the 904. LOL

Measured the lobes with the mic, they came out to be true, now remember the lift doesn't determine the sound of the cam, and this is also a circle track cam, not a drag cam. There is a big difference
