Another great list, Tom! May I suggest an Honorable Mention in this category for Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac? Between 1968 and 1969, they released three studio albums (Fleetwood Mac, Mr. Wonderful, and Then Play On), two compilations (The Pious Bird of Good Omen, and English Rose), and a blues jam album (Fleetwood Mac in Chicago). I give them an Honorable Mention because Fleetwood Mac of course continued for many years after 1969; however, one could argue that once Peter left the group, they became a very different band.

Pop and rock music was considered dispensable and acts weren’t expected to last long until the CD era, so an act lasting more the four years would have been unusual back then.

Just a couple more that crossed my mind (though a couple may be slightly over 4 years depending how you date their album releases) - The Box Tops, The Left Banke, The Sonics, Country Joe & the Fish, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Beau Brummels, and Janis Joplin/Big Brother & the Holding Company.

The story I heard at the time was that Iggy Pop was considered, but the band decided that they'd had enough of substance abusing loose cannons, which Iggy still was in those days. Of course, that could be just an old rock'n'roll wives' tale.

Yup, the usual suspects. I guess you could stretch a point and throw in the original Mothers of Invention, '66-'69 (or was it early '70?) -- they were prolific enough, and Zappa definitely broke up the band.
@simonagree40708 күн бұрын
After considerable reflection, I'm going to add The Monkees, despite the open invitation to sneers'n'jeers. Yeah, I get it, they weren't a "real" band, they didn't write their own songs (except Mike and Pete), and they didn't play their own instruments (except when they did), and half the band quit before they stopped releasing records. But very similar remarks could be made about a lot of "real" bands who didn't have to mime to their records every week on a silly TV show, and they did put out a bunch of great pop records in a very short period, so I like them for this. Besides, they stood up for themselves to "the Man", and they're still not in the useless HoF. So there.
