The head is covered on the journey because it was discovered that some of the heads were affected by factory defect involving the casting if I remember correctly... the issue was corrected in (I believe) 2015, which is why your Promaster wasn’t covered. Also, the fact that you have scoring on the cams and rocker failure, along with the cracked valve, is possibly due to overheating from running the 30 weight oil.. 20 weight seems to be the appropriate weight for the Pentastar. Again, im going off of memory... so forgive me if I’m wrong on some of this, but I wanted to throw those tidbits out there as a good starting point for getting some of your answers. Run some Mobil 1 5w20 once you get this rebuilt. I’m at 300,000 miles on my 10 year old 3.6, and I firmly believe it’s due to the oil. Also... keep an eye on your 62TE 😉

This looks to me like damage from carbon build up due to crankase ventilation problem for which there is a bulletin. So if you have excessive oil consumption you have to address it, otherwise it will happen all over again.

2015 was the last year for the 150,000 powertrain warranty for Jeeps. FCA dropped the warranty coverage down to 60,000 miles. If it's the same for RAM that could also be the reason it's not covered.

Let's just make one thing clear. I have a 27 year old toyota t100, which is my daily driver and has been put through the ringer carrying heavy loads and being overloaded on many occasions. I use it for work every day. It has 545000 Kms on it, still runs like new and does not consume any significant amount of oil. It isn't noisy or underpowered. It's a 3.4, so smaller than your engine. Last time I had the valve covers off everything was clean as a new engine. Proper engineering and good maintenance go hand in hand. At this point I never expect my engine to fail, as it is simply a beast and a marvel of engineering, never giving any issues at all. I can also vouch for the camshafts still looking like new.. go figure.... That's old school Japanese vs America for you

I have 2014 3500 ext one, doing lots of highway miles working in expediting business. Got it in 2018 with 28k miles on it. From 30k miles to 240k miles used it occasionally to tow 7*14 enclosed trailer (empty 2200lbs up to 5k-6k GTW) about 70k miles with that trailer and maybe 30k with smaller ones like 5*8 or 6*12 Uhaul ones. First year fall - about 60k miles went through rocky mountains in CO with full trailer 5k lbs I think and empty van - that was a mistake. Overheated trans and it failed. Luckily still had factory warranty - was about to expire in a few months)) New dealer trans (could cost me 7k if paying out of pocket). since then replaced alternator, belt and bearings. Battery, spark plugs and tires. Oil change every 8-10k with semi sintetic HM oil. Almost 300k miles now. Changed trans fluid twice (160k and 290k), since 240k using occasionally to tow only small trailers. Lots of dash lights on for a while (air bags sensor, oil pressure sensor and some minor ones). Overall very pleased with grandpa PROMaster - few tips - dont go over 3,5k rpms, don't tow anything really heavy over the Rockys or in some tough parts at NE and other Appalachian mountains. GL and HF))

I recently saw a video with a Pentastar that had 500k miles and I am not surprised. To me this is one of THE best engines in it's class (V6) and of it's time, that was available on the market for someone who is working on their stuff like you (and me) in terms of easy access and repair ability, but also about longevity. The oil filter housing and roller rocker issues that so many people are crying about are nothing in comparison with the trouble what other engines (same class, same time) are now for. Again, is it perfect? No, but it is as good as it gets. People who disagree are usually those who don't work on their engines an keep quoting what "their mechanic said".

@@mrtopcat2 I somewhat agree with you. Ease of work yes but these at least some still apparently have the flaw. If you go through the videos on here there is always a theme. #2 cylinder misfire that is later diagnosed as low compression or severe blow by. Also usually low on #4 as well. To many people with exact same issue to be a fluke. Chrysler said at one point it was due to poor fuel quality use higher octane to reduce pre-ignition. Maybe that is why some have issues and some do not. All I know is I can be hardly afford low grade and it's not a super high compression engine I'm not paying for high test to fix their issues. I'm a Chrysler fan I have three but this will be the last 3.6. My 4.7 v8 has almost 160000 miles and just replaced first sensor last week. The 3.6 had head replacement at 76000 miles I'm not impressed!

The real design flaw is the horrible PVC system they have. It actually cools the engine gases and injects it back into the engine instead of the exhaust to get burned up. This also makes it into a sealed system with no way to equalize engine pressure and vent the moisture. Because the engine can't vent, It fills the intake manifold with oily gunk. and corrupts the oil with water. You should change your oil more often. at least every 5,000 miles. By having oil misting out of the intake manifolds into the cylinders it causes carbon to build up on the intake, exhaust valves, and the piston tops which is a known issue with the 3.6. There is a fix and it's adding two catch cans, one on each side of the motor. This is a well known problem with the 3.6 and many companies make catch cans for them. The catch cans get the moisture and gases out and clean up the intakes. Carbon coated valves will cause them to run hot and burn, even though they're forged valves. If there is any flaw with the engine, that is it. I highly recommend catch cans for anyone who owns the Pentastar. This is especially prevalent in cold temperatures and will fill up the catch cans with white gunk. That is what water does to oil and it would be back into the engine with even more water without the catch cans. I have an 18 Charger and at 9k miles, the intake manifolds and the air intake were soaked with oil. And the thing ran so well, I couldn't believe it. Not anymore.

@@wtang912 Yes it does, just not as much. Most can get away without. Check your air filter, if it's gunky, it needs a catch can. Mine would drip into my supercharger blades so it was a no brainer. This applies to all Pentastars 2016 and up.

Sorry to hear it wasn't covered under the extended warranty that Mopar offered. I have a 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan that I bought around 50,000 miles. I have heard of this problem, but have yet to experience any problems. I am hoping the left head was replaced before I bought it. I also have not had any problems with rocker arms, lifters, or any excessive wear to the cam shaft. Maybe I got lucky. I did however had to replace the oil filter/cooler housing because the plastic warped just enough to cause a small leak. I replaced with an aluminum oil filter/cooler instead of the OEM plastic version. I also had issues with the thermostat and because the housing is also plastic, I decided to replace with a metal one. While I was at it I also replaced the coolant crossover pipe that is plastic with a metal one. I finally nipped my coolant leak in the butt, hopefully permanently. I change my oil with generic full synthetic oil and generic oil filter every 5,000 miles and I still haven't had any major engine problems. I am up to 140,000 miles now. I did get the transmission rebuilt a little after 80,000 miles and after some research have decided to at least drop the transmission pan and replace the transmission filter at minimum every 50,000 miles. That won't replace all the transmission fluid because I think about half always stays inside the transmission unless you pump it out either using a professional machine or using the transmission pump on the vehicle. I might try to use the transmission pump to extract the old transmission fluid will new fluid is suck in.

Ok, you said you were running Royal purple 5w30. THis engine requires 5w20 weight oil to aid in proper flows at low and high rpm. Also, were you running E85 fuel in this? I know that the manufacturer says you can but this engine runs a 208 degree thermostat for fuel efficiency and that can lead to high cylinder temps also. The burning and cracking on the exhaust valve indicates high cylinder temperatures and pre-detonation. These engines when run with 5w20 synthetic oil changed every 5-7000 mi and 91 octane (no alcohol) gas should run for 250,000 mi + kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXXNp5mabtKia9U

@@williamryan7403 I should have also written in my post that the damage to the valves could have been caused by pre-detonation. These engines have been known to have issues with this. Resulting in Chrysler extending the warranties out to 150000 miles for certain casting numbers of this engine. Therefore, as I am an ASE certified and trained mechanic with 30 years experience respectfully disagree. Premium 91 octane fuel was developed for higher compression/higher revving engines to prevent pre-detonation and aid in a more complete fuel burn. In a "standard" performance engine, you would see no benefit, as they usually have compression ratios below 9.3/1. The pentastar is running 11.3/1 compression ratio, which is up in the realm of racing engines. While the engine is capable of meeting the Euro6 standards, it is always recommended to burn premium 91 octane fuel in engines that have compression ratios of 10/1 or higher.

Have a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan with the 3.6L having the exact same issue right now. It only has 76000 miles. I was told this was an issue with the early models but must still be a problem on some. Low compression on 2 cylinders #2 has 60% blowby and the #4 had 40% . Serviced every 4500 miles with mobile one full synthetic oil. Presented also with p0302 or #2 cylinder misfire. Waiting for dealership to remove head and see if warranty I got when I bought van used will cover it. I purchased it used at 49000 miles. Hey, I hope you get my reply but right now I'm driving a 2014 Dodge charger, it's got a 3.6l V6 pentastar engine in it. It has 119k miles on it. I initially put what it had said on the gas cap. E85 gas The E85 gas was absolutely awful feeling when I drove around with it. Once I put in 93 or shells vpower I got increased responsiveness and mpg. I am currently also suffering from that ticking noise, I'd say it's fairly tolerable ticking noise, but it's there. Is it okay that I put in fully synthetic Valvoline Platinum 5w30 high mileage oil, since the engine has well over 100k on it I figure a slightly thicker oil will ensure it's longevity plus I have very calm driving habits. Please give advice of any, thanks all. Oh and my mpg currently while on the highway, and sustained driving well over 20miles plus was 32.4mpg (and I have the police pursuit package for this, not sure if anything changes)

@@DualsportDisport Good morning 👋, so I decided to go with what the manufacturer recommended oil weight which is 5w-20, so I decided to put the best oil at that weight in. I'm currently using Mobile 1 high mileage advanced protection oil, fully synthetic. 5w20. And the car is running fine, only thing tho, and I did not mention this in my previous post here But what do you make of the fact that while I'm say at a red light while in drive, waiting, I start to see my oil pressure slowly go down, from 19psi, then 17psi an then when it gets to 15psi the engine or something starts to make alittle grinding noise or shuddering slightly I feel, so I put it in park or neutral until the light is green, so the oil psi goes back to 24ish+ and the shaking stops lol
