When I was in the dorm I had a lock on everything, it looked silly but I knew if anything happened the police would need to get a warrant to break that lock so I didn't really stress. Lock your shit up or they'll lock you up.

You're right, this is allowed. Anything that is in plain view they are allowed to see, and if it is potentially illegal it can give them probable cause to conduct a more thorough search.

I'd like to know what kind of college has dorm rooms that large. Most of the dorms have rooms only large enough for two beds, two desks, two bookshelves, two closets, & not much else. That guy's got a bed, a couch, looks like a lot of room to walk around. Most of my dorm rooms were tiny by comparison.

Some schools have a line in their rules that says the school can do whatever they want. At my school, there's a small line buried in there about "disrupting University activity" that can be used as a catchall if you manage to otherwise defend yourself with the school rules. As I understand it though, school actions still have to be in compliance with national and state law if you plan to challenge them in a court of law (not the school judiciary).

I am a resident on a military base, and I was wondering if you guys could make a video detailing the rights or lack thereof with the matter of being searched on any sort of military base. It would be really interesting for people who do put themselves at risk for searches and seizures to know what they can and can't do; I was told that almost all of your rights to searches and seizures are lost the moment that gate guard hands back your ID card. Could you confirm this in anyway? Id like to know.

I'm 50 (for what that is worth..) and I wanted to compliment this video commentary. There is a lot of very good advice here for young people to think about. I'd also like to caution young men in particular, the law is not balanced or fair (despite claims otherwise..). If you are male you already have a big strike against you in most contemporary western societies. Protect yourselves at all times against false accusations... -

I am a commuter to the college I attend. When the public safety department walks around issuing tickets on campus parking lot they lean on the cars and look in the windows, even the back end of vehicles. Isn't that considered an illegal search, I mean there's no reason to look in a vehicles, the driver/owner is not present, and obviously no consent was given. If this is illegal, what do I do to inform others?
@2011grayj111 жыл бұрын
There was a previous comment to the one I said asking for someone else's credentials. I ask about commuter cars and them being searched, without owner consent. Sorry for the confusion.

PLEASE AWNSER FLEX.....Can the police enter your dorm room if they "think they smell marijuana" coming from your room and you do not give consent ? This particular college states in the student code of conduct that no one may enter your room with out legitamate probable cause but they can if they suspect an imediate life, property, saftey, or health hazard. This "smell of marijuana" could have been coming from anywhere it is a college dormatory
@Stentor712 жыл бұрын
I know that, but I think they're using someone else's room, but you have to admit that it's very large for a dorm room, because of the presence of the couch along one wall, something that would have been impossible in any of the dorm rooms I had at UC Berkeley.

If a police officer approaches you in a private residence like someone's home, are you legally required to be breathalyzed if he/she asks you to do so? Can you refuse the test if have not been driving(which nullifies your right to refuse by my understanding)?
@OfficerZee41110 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's different in other states, but, in the state of Florida, we only breathalyze you once we bring you to the station. If we suspect you of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, we must first see you behind the wheel of your vehicle or riding your bicycle. We don't breathalyze people in their homes.

I say go to Walmart, get a $20 trunk and a lock from the dollar store and put everything illegal in there. layer the bottom with some potpourri too to mask any lingering sent. Also, cover your closet using a tension rod and some blinds. At my school, RAs can't open it or ask for it to be opened during a standard room check and police don't go in their either. I had a friend who popped open a square in his ceiling and hid his liq up there.

You forgot one important rule: don't be an obnoxious jackass. Most of the people I have seen get busted were partying it up late at night making a ton of noise. When neighbors who were trying to study or sleep complained about the noise, they were told to piss off. This is not a good way to avoid getting the authorities up in your business.
