how do you cook your legumes? I assume youre talking about lentils. What other legumes? How do you make them taste good? I eat just plain boiled lentils with quinoa and rice sometimes, but that can get boring. I don't crave less healthy things, but when I do cook for my parents or girlfriend and I want to use lentils, it can be a little tough for them because they arent used to these whole foods

TVP, tofu/Kale/collard smoothies, soymilk, and beans everyday for me. Brocolli is also high in protein. Stop eating meat and eat beans every and get antioxidants and all the good stuff not found in meat. Sprouted buckwheat granola, Steele cut oats (easy in a rice cooker, reheats well), ameranth and quinoa are also high in protein.

You are lucky that you have a good appetite but for most people with decent appetites it is extremely difficult to even get 100 grams of protein on a vegan diet excluding the vegan protein powders.. Even for a meat eater eating 250 grams of chicken only gives 70 grams of protein. Also bread and pasta have a good amount of protein? You cant be serious.

I went from 180g protein daily to anywhere between 75g-120g protein since I’ve been plant based (going on 4 months) and my progress has not delayed whatsoever. Protein is very overrated in my opinion. Just fyi for those who would like to make the transition but are afraid of the decrease in protein intake. Eating plant based also allows you to eat much more food within your caloric goal.

Jim Walker Actually it could be enough. The ranges typically given (1.5-1.8 g/kg BW) are just an estimation of in which range of protein you get all the essential aminoacids you need (as easy as get your protein). If you combine lysine high protein sources (legumes) and methionine/cysteine high protein sources (almost all grains) the 1.8 g per kg would easily go down to 1.5 or even less. There are apps like Chron-o-meter to count macros, and they show the aa specific intake.

You *can* get all essential amino acids from plants but it is slightly harder than via meat but its a very minor down side compared to the downsides meat has. To me, meat is just a means of a more convenient or a tasty protein source. Objectively, plants can give you optimal amounts of protein just like meat.

If you followed a meal plan correctly on both diets you should have gained strength and size easily. If you were eating shit and junk food then its not surprising. Btw what are you avg macros for a day since being a vegan and what were your avg before?

Good stuff Alex! My favorite breakfast is Old Fashion oatmeal with hemp seeds, soy milk, and pure cocoa powder, 23 Grams of protein and tastes amazing. Plus I typically have Orange juice, 2 g protein, peanuts, 7 g protein, and two slices of whole grain bread which is 8 grams of protein. Honestly as long as you are getting enough calories you are probably getting enough protein. I do use a supplement from time to time I use MRM veggie elite, it's cheap on amazon and has 24g of protein, 2 g leucine, and almost 50% DV iron. Taste great and good luck on your plant based life style, you'll feel intellectually free.

Mind to not buy too much into the "protein combining" myth. Your body reuses and recycles many proteins in your body all the time. It's hard for you to eat so poorly and with such a lack of variety that you get a deficiency in any particular kind of protein. Most importantly, stop believing that you have to eat all sorts of protein every day or even at every meal! That's not how it works bro.

Alex, every food is a complete protein! check it out on cronometer. Every food has all the amino acids except for gelatin, which is missing the amino acid tryptophan. its a pretty common misconception. Although varying in amounts, every food has each of the ESSENTIAL amino acids.
@alfredogonzalez8735

And actually the amino acid ratios are the way they are so amino acids don’t compete with each other, amino acid profile in animal products increases chronic disease through many pathways like igf-1 and methionine

Pretty easy fix for vegans trying to get a gram per pound of bodyweight which is only necessary for cutting athletes and overkill for athletes trying to gain weight. Just take 400grams of mung beans, soak them for an hour and wash them, boil them, drain the water out in a pan, put the boiled beans in a blender, out two cloves of garlic, 4tsp cumin powder, 2tsp black pepper, juice of a whole lime, then blend and make hummus, add in that drained water slowly as you blend to get the desired consistency. That's, 96+ grams of protein right there ready to go, add to that whole grain tortillas, and make burritos outta that stuff, you will very easily find yourself surpass the 150 gram of protein mark. Yes it's slightly high calorie but remember, eating a high carb low fat diet will easily allow you to stay lean and get lean because in the absence of dietary fat the body loses fat rapidly and carbs don't convert to fat in humans.

The one important factor to consider in regards to protein, on a plant based diet, is that you need to get the full spectrum of essential amino acids. Individual plant based foods generally do not contain the full list of EAAs, whereas meat does. So, you need a mix of plant proteins throughout the day to ensure you're getting them all. It is not as simple as just hitting a number. That said, it is pretty easy to do, and most people will do it without trying. Grains are missing some, and so are beans, but they're missing different ones, so if you include both in your diet you're probably covered. Just don't eat 100% wheat gluten all day and think you're covered. Micro nutrient concerns are a little more difficult to cover...

Thanks for being one of the only people that's honest about protein intake, Alex. It's extremely overrated and people don't realize that protein is just a building block, but you're not placing any blocks without energy (from glycogen, which comes from carbs.) I myself would argue that sufficient carb intake is more important than protein intake for muscle building.

I have a doubt: As a 6 feet 2 inches 180 pound guy, I should get around 140 grams of protein to bulk. If I do my calculations for a normal day (not counting calories, I eat clean) 400ml milk + ~120 gram of cereals for breakfast: around 18 grams of protein. Lunch: 300 grams of pasta + about 40 grams of cheese: stacking about 50g protein Dinner: about 250g chicken, let's say 60g protein Total: about 130 grams of protein. I just find hard to eat more than this, and I can't understand how can Americans (I'm from Italy) eat so much food, do 10k calorie challenge and so on. On main meals I'm already to the force-feeding point, maybe I have some more space in the afternoon or in the morning, but it's hard. I think I'm just abnormal. Being 18, I hope my maturation isn't over yet, that it will bring me some rib cage growth and appetite because I'm afraid I won't be able to bulk with this feeding in a close future. Someone has any ideas to help me get down more food?
@AlexLeonidas
@AlexLeonidas 7 жыл бұрын
I hear you Giovanni, I had the same problem when I was bulking. Force feeding is really not fun, I get it. Unfortunately, my only advice is that you need to suck it up and eat regardless of how you feel. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Great video Alex! I totally agree with the protein advise in plant based diets, but now that you are kind of promoting a plant based diet maybe you should advise people to watch out some micros much more difficult to get. I think the hardest one to get enough is calcium, specially if you don't eat that much processed foods (tofu or fortified milks). Also vitamins B12 and D but those are much easier.

I genuinely don't understand how you can find it so easy to get all your protein in with a plant based diet. Like how?? Vegan protein shakes are significantly more expensive here (soy isn't too bad, but it SUCKS for mixing). And most other vegan sources of protein have a lot of carbs with them (like rice, pasta or other high carb foods you have to boil). I really want to eat more plant based since I have a pretty sensitive digestive system and those kinds of foods just feel a lot 'lighter'. With meat and dairy it's so easy: I just buy some low fat yoghurt with lots of protein. Even flavored yoghurt has high protein and low carbs these days and it doesn't cost shit. Then I buy some pre-seasoned chicken and some veggies and I'm done getting groceries for the day. I just don't how to do this with only plant based foods.

I would recommend to make yourself legume sprouts. During the sprouting process things like phytates, lectines and trypsin-inhibitors will be deminished and the bioavability of nutrients and the protein rises. It tastes better aswell and is a lot easier to digest. Best to do it with are lentils(doesn´t work very good with hulled ones like the red or yellow, so choose unhulled) and chickpeas. Combine that with some veggies, some rice, a bit of oil, salt and seasoning and that meal will be fucking awesome.

Lol I can't digest kale. Cooked or raw, it leaves the body looking the same way it entered. Kale adds ZERO protein to my diet. Vegans never talk about bioavailability or biosimilarity. If you wanna build muscle naturally, it probably helps to eat it.

I’ve actually been thinking of incorporating more plant based sources of protein into my diet. I’ve just been cautious of the fact that you must carefully cherrypick (lol get it) the sources that have low carb ratios to their protein content if you also want to enjoy other foods with high carbohydrates, or for the simple fact that you’d want to increase protein intake without a giant leap in carb intake alongside it. I often thought about this problem until I looked into soy products, tofu and tempeh which are all low carb sources (unlike beans and pastas) Other than that, bioavailability and a tendency to be incomplete protein sources are my only other gripes but definitely some tofu and soy milk will mix up my boring chicken diet lol.

Its a good point, a lot of plants do have enough protein to make you reach your protein goal, but, for the most part, its not quality protein. Chicken breast? 80% of that forms full proteins. While from veggies, itll be only 30%.

Lets say i weigh 80kg(176lbs) and want 0.8g per lb. Tofu is 8g protein per 100g. That means i want 140g of protein. Thats about 1.75kg of tofu to eat. Now with chicken breast, 31g per 100g. I want 140g of protein so i need around 450g of chicken. Thats a pretty signifacnt difference you need over 3 times more tofu an i sure as shit wouldnt eat almost 2kg of tofu considering i weigh over 176lbs.

Let me make this easy for you, the human body has a neutral pH of 7.4 which is alkaline. That means the human body is on the alkaline side of construction. Anything you put in your body should be mainly alkaline. The highest acidifiying foods are animal products. The big industries are promotin highly processed and sterilized foods. Your body cant function on that. You need to watch the small details, THE MICRONUTRIENTS. Not the macronutrients. as alphadestiny himself mentioned. You dont even need that much protein as the industries want you to believe. The human body itself evolved from a microorganism. so did the ecosystem and the world. You need to get your daily micronutrients for the long run of your life. Throughout human evolution we have walked. Walking is the healthiest excersice for your system. Its untaxing and healthy for your whole body. A turtle can live up to 5000 years. why? cause its not doing intensive excersices. its just slow walking We share 99% same DNA as a chimpanzee only 1 DNA thread makes us different, our cognitive thought. We have the exact same digestion system as a chimpanzee EXACT same stomach. So why should we ignore their diet? Which is alkalizing. You need fruits,vegetables, nuts and seeds EVERYDAY. And you need to walk everyday. Let me help you with hitting micronutrients . Vitamin A : 2 carrots a day contains 1000% daily intake of vitamin A. Vitamin a provides healthy eyes and heart health. carrots contain beta carotene which reverts into vitamin a when digested. Thats why animal liver contains vitamin A cause it was digested by the animal. And this is why grandma said carrots are healthy for your sight. Vitamin E: healthy skin and collagen production for elastic and young skin. 30-40 grams of sunflower seeds will provide you with 80% daily intake vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin. So you cant eat excess of it. Vitamin K: 3-4 Kiwis a day will provide about 100% of daily intake of this vitamin. Vitamin C: mainly citrus fruits, berries. This vitamin gets excreted if you sweat. so if you excersice alot its important to keep stacking this vitamin. Orange juices or fruit juices will do the job. Its healthiest to eat berries everyday. You can buy some frozen. ALL B vitamins ranging from 1 to 12 Grains all the way. Any kind of grain will provide you with high amounts of b vitamins. Except for b12. B12 is a natural bacteria found in the ground. and many people are lacking this vitamin cause foods are so processed and sterelized to this day. So its important to take a b12 vitamin complex. B vitamin works with folate and vitamin c. to combat paleness, produce red blood cells and increases iron absorption. Iron is the most important nutrient. its like a magnet. it pulls all other vitamins and minerals to it. without iron your body wont produce any red blood cells and will decay. Which brings me to iron intake. GRAINS all the way. if you eat a whole foods vegan diet. your body will get triple the amount of daily intake of iron. Otherwhise you can always supplement this. Magnesium,potassium and calcium. Magnesium potassium and calcium ARE ALL ALKALIZING MINERALS. Remember Calcium dosent work without vitamin D. and vitamin D dosent work without iron. they all hang to each other. The Industry is promoting high calcium diets. But wihout proper vitamin D. you will suffer from arthiriis. bone decay. bone cancer. bone diseases in general due to calcification of your bones.. Magnesium and zinc are so easy to get. Again you just have to eat whole-grains. Like spelt, quinoa.. etc Copper. is electrifiying it is used to create electricity thats why you see copper wires everywhere. The human body is ELECTRIC aswell. your spine is like a electric pole. the nerves is the the electricity. To bring electricity you need electric alkalizing foods mainly. Copper is found in mainly all fruits,vegetables and some grains. Selenium: this nutrient is used to cure depression and mental frustration. just by eating 1 brazil nut a day you get 100% daily intake of this nutrient. and i cant remember to say this enough but WALNUTS. The healthiest nut in the world. 10 grams of walnuts has more omega 3 than 200g fish. You need to eat a handfull of walnuts everyday to meet your omega 3 and 6's MOST Important in the fat department. Avocadoes and bananas are your best sources of potassium and zinc. since theyre the most alkalizing and healthiest of fruits. Remember count your micro nutrients before you count your macros. use cronometer.com and type in your foods. it will show you all your micronutrients. Cheers

Alex I think you're not completely right to use your own experience because your TDEE is dayum 4000kcal IIRC. I could get my protein in 3600kcal or whatever too. But I'm a 200lbs guy trying to fit 160g of protein in a 2000kcal diet. This is pretty hard even with chicken and whey. Feel like my day revolves around getting protein without going over 2000kcal. I don't really get to enjoy non protein heavy foods except fruit here and there. I can't imagine getting 160g protein in 2000kcal unless it's literally only downing shakes and eating lentils.

The differences in opinion regarding optimal protein intake are really confusing. Thank you for weighing your opinion on the matter. I am looking to transition to vegan by the end of the year - now I can do that with far more confidence - 150-170g of protein is far easier to hit than the 225-250 I was ignorantly setting as my target before. I used to be a really competitive endurance athlete and I wish I knew what I was doing nutrition wise, you should definitely eat plant based and get most of your calories from whole plant food with naturally a lot of carbohydrates, the oxidative stress and inflammation , and the atherosclerosis effects your entire vascular system including your lungs, so eating animals products is not optimal for an endurance athlete, if I knew what I was doing I’m sure I would have been a better athlete, eat a lot of fruit, legumes, grains, and nuts and seeds ... veggies if you can as well of course
