I’d like to start this prune regimen. But I’ve read that acrylamide (formed from high dry heat used to prepare and dry the plums) can be dangerous. Does anyone know of a prune brand with lower acrylamide? Might sun-dried prunes be healthier?

Ok nice about dried prunes but no explanation about how it actually works to reduce osteoporosis and even build bone density. Also dried prunes would have a lot more sugar than fresh prunes so must it be dried prunes? Wish this is answered in this short interview.

For GI patients, be aware that prunes are high FODMAP and will get your GI symptoms worse. Check with your doctor. GI issues are very commonly associated with osteoporosis hence the need to double check with your doctor before eating those.

I participated in a research study conducted by Dr. Hooshmand years ago at San Diego State University. I had osteopenia at the time. I was told to eat 5 prunes a day given my fairly small body size. After the study was over, I only continued eating the prunes for a while. Last year I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis and put on Reclast. I'm a lifelong exerciser and 50- year lacto-vegetarian. I just decided to resume eating soaked prunes along with an excellent calcium, magnesium, zinc, vitamin D and K, etc. supplement. If nothing else, prunes are a healthy food, so nothing lost by eating them.

@@marymonk I can't remember. I was diagnosed the first time around 20 years ago and took Fosamax, for way too long a time, following prior doctor's advice. At the time of Dr. Hooshmand's study, I had osteopenia, but not osteoporosis. Around 10 years ago, I developed hyperparathyroidism, which takes a lot of calcium from the bones and deposits it in the blood, as I understand it, depleting the bones of calcium. The body is so complex. I have no idea why the osteoporosis returned when I was again diagnosed by an endocrinologist 2 years ago. I'm over 80 and just happy I can function as well as I do, exercising, volunteering, being a pet parent, living a full life. Sorry I can't offer anything more specific.

While I applaud Dr. Hooshmand's efforts to study the effects of dried plum on BMD, there are several limitations that need to be addressed. One is the high risk of bias in all the plum studies. Due to high risk of bias, the certainty of evidence of dried plums on BMD is low. In addition, while Dr. Hooshmand excluded individuals on hormone replacement therapy, she did not exclude individuals who may be regularly involved in weightbearing exercises or on osteoporosis medications, which could have impacted and skewed results. Lastly after one year, the only significant changes in BMD were at the ulna and spine. The spine is mainly composed on trabecular bone and is more metabolically active than cortical bone. Before we can say dried plums are effective at improving BMD, we should really look at meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (not cohort) and the certainty of evidence around this recommendation. In addition, the results on dried plum and fracture risk is still unclear and we know from studies that fractures are an important outcome for people living with osteoporosis and low bone mass.

About 40 years ago, there was a TV commercial for Fletcher's Castoria where a mother was saying she uses the bottled medication instead of prunes (which was the traditional cure our grandmothers used) for her child's constipation. She would say that she never knew how many prunes to use and used a phrase that after it was heard on this commerical, became popular out in society, almost like "Where's the beef?" She woud ask, rhetorically, "Are three enough are six too many?" Then, I would shout at the screen, "Three are enough! Six are too many!" Now, when I reach for the prune container, this saying plays in my head because no matter how good they taste, if I have three prunes, on a normal day, I'm fine. Six prunes are far, far too many.

They are also good for iron. If you are on the toilet all day ,it would mean that your body is finally getting the fibre it has been needing...prunes only soften what's there, so it can come out gently:if your diet is low in fibre, start introducing prunes gradually, say just 2, then in crease every couple of days, til you have your 6-9 per day...and if you have osteoperosis, this treatment, along with magnesium, zinc, calcium, k2, is FAR better than the synthetic chemicals (and their side effects!) can offer! Eat prunes and enjoy.🙂

You encourage the use of a progression to heavier weights. I'm 76 yrs old with osteoporosis. I've lifted weights for over 40 years and feel pretty strong. However, I can't progress beyond 8 pounds because it hurts the joints in my hands and wrists. I also can't put a lot of pressure on the palms of my hands, as in some yoga poses. Any advice for me?

That sounds like me! It's arthritis for me. I started drinking distilled water about 4 mos ago and there is an improvement. It dissolves the calcium deposits in joints. It does not remove calcium from your bones, as some say. You also get your body's minerals from your food. Minerals in hard water collect in you joints because your body cannot dissolve them. Anyway, you might try that. 😊

The researchers state: "Our successive six-month clinical trial evaluated the efficacy of two doses of dried plum (50 g versus 100 g) in preventing bone loss in older postmenopausal women. Our findings confirmed dried plums’ ability to prevent the loss of total body BMD and indicated that a lower dose of dried plum (i.e., 50 g) may be as effective as 100 g of dried plum." Thank you. There are a number of important health benefits of prunes beyond improving bone health. Prunes have high dietary fiber content and significant amounts of phenolics (chlorogenic acid) and sorbitol. As a result, prunes have a laxative effect and can be an effective and natural way to treat constipation. There are a number of important vitamins in prunes. A serving of four prunes provides 280 milligrams of potassium and 22 micrograms of vitamin K. Because prunes have a higher amount of vitamin K compared to other popular fruits, they may help improve calcium balance more than other food sources.

5 reasons why you should include dried plums in your diet: 1. Dried plums neutralize dangerous substances in our body Some substances that are identified in the plant called Prunus domestica are famous antioxidants. This substances in dried plums neutralize some dangerous radicals and prevent our cells and their membranes from being damaged. 2. Improve absorption of iron When you feel tired, have a short breath or dizziness you might have a problem with anemia or lack of iron in your body. What helps in that situation is vitamin C that improves absorption of iron. Dried plums are high in vitamin C and are much better source of it than any supplement pill. 3. Help digestion and protect intestines Driem plums are well-known laxative - so, if you ever had a problem of constipation, here is a super-natural effective cure! Usually, constipation happens when there is a lack of fibers in your diet. Prunes are fiber-rich and they contribute to feeding friendly bacteria in our intestines which protect disease-causing pathogenic bacteria. 4. Improve muscle and bone condition It is confirmed by research that dried plums have mineral called Boron that helps bones and muscles be strong. They can be a good prevention of osteoporosis when taken regularly. Actually, they are the most effective fruit for that purpose. 5. Prevent obesity and diabetes Since dried plums are high in fibers, prunes help to maintain blood sugar level balanced. Fibers postpone the absorption of sugar and increase your sensitivity to insulin. When you eat a prune it leaves you satisfied after a meal, so you don’t overeat nor potentially put on some more weight.

Greetings from Singapore. Chanced upon this video and eager to take prunes for my osteopenia. Bought a pack of prunes and under the ingredients list reads : "pitted prunes (dried plums)" I'm confused whether it's prunes or plums that I've bought. Kindly advise. Thks alot

"Prunes" is just another name for dried-plums.

the label tells it all as does the researcher, a plum that has been dried to preserve it is called a prune so you have bought prunes which are dried plums, exactly as you should.

I would love to start this regimen, as I can’t take osteoporosis medications. I’m just afraid of acrylamide sin prunes. Can you tell me how much acrylamide in one prune? I’ve learned people shouldn’t take in more than 117 mg daily. Thank you!

Prunes are dried plums, stewing them just adds back some of the water, so no they don't have to be still dried.

The drying process creates high levels of elialic acid which is what is anti inflammatory and prevents further break down of the bones. Slows resorption. Plums don’t have this special ingredient. It’s 90 degrees drying heat that pushes up the polyphenols in prunes that are so valuable.

You could try extra virgin olive oil. What you want is something very high in polyphenols. Plums also contain boron so find a boron supplement. Natto is also good for vitamin k2.

@@sarahholf9660 I am taking a boron and K2 supplement. I have eaten natto and it's not bad, but I am having some GI intolerance issues and trying to rule out certain things. I didn't know about the EVOO; since I am whole-food plant based, I try to stay away from added oils, but most likely get enough polyphenols in the variety and vegetables that I eat.

Prunes are loaded with sugar, aren’t they?
@margaretmartinpt
@margaretmartinpt 2 жыл бұрын
Many people are concerned that prunes contain too much sugar and could increase sugar levels in the blood. While they are relatively high in carbohydrates, research has shown that they do not cause a material rise in blood sugar levels. Prunes have the potential to increase levels of adiponectin, a hormone that plays a role in blood sugar regulation, which in turn keeps a lid on sugar levels. When compared to other fruits, prunes has a lower level of sugar content and a lower Glycemic Index (GL). Please read my post on this topic.
