I'm in Salem, MA and it's April, 29, 2024. I wanted to know how to cut back the dead branches in my Limelight Hydrangeas and you just answered my questions beautifully. Thanks, Kelly. Now I'll go back into the yard and correctly cut and prune.

This was a good video especially where you demonstrated the cut stems with dead white stems and healthy interior green color. It makes it easier to take action to prune off the dead sections.

Thank you! No one had ever mentioned frost damage. I could not understand why my plants never flower but I fertilize and do not prune much. Now I know they are freezing out.

Thank you so much for this! We had sub zero temps and an ice storm in January here in TN and I suspected the old wood on my Endless Summer as being dead. I just came inside from cutting it all back and every single one was white, dry and brittle. I was worried i did the wrong thing. I’m sad about it but I have heavy new growth so I hope to see SOME blooms this year. No blooms yet though, it’s very slow this year.

I would have liked to have seen the hydrangea when you were finished trimming. And, if the branches were dead, why did you leave them 5" or so long? Just questions. We had a terrible frost and my hydrangea completely died back and now has just tiny green leaves. I cut all the stalks/branches back and thought maybe I was wrong to do that. What does it mean, the branches after cutting were white? Should they have been green? Thank you for making your video. Patti
@KellyLehman2 жыл бұрын
Hi Patti , great questions . You were correct in cutting the hydrangea that had dead branches all the way back to the ground . I left mine a little higher in the video because it was difficult to get in low on the plant as I balanced my phone which i was using to live stream . The reason they were white is because they were dead . If the branches were green when you cut into them , it would mean that they were still alive . i may go and shoot a new live video now showing the hydrangea completely pruned . 🌸🤗🤗🤗

Great Video. It helped with my mountain lacecap hydrangea dilemma. This is my second year with hydrangeas and both years this frost damage occured. A bit bummed they have not performed their best. I live in zone 5, is there a way to cover them?
@mreunome Жыл бұрын
Never had this happen until this year & didn't know what caused it. I know you're not supposed to prune in August because you're cutting off the blooms for next year, but all my hydrangeas look like that. I guess they will not grow now so I guess I should prune them all back.
@robinwine3957Ай бұрын
I was wondering that when you were cutting off the dead wood with dead buds, why you don't go all the way down to the base and cut? Will there be any new growth on the length of stems you left vs cutting all way down to base?
@thiagochaves3818 Жыл бұрын
I have the same issue, but it’s now almost august 1. Is it okay to do this clean up trim this late into the season??

It’s the end of May and my hydrangeas look like yours in the video but when pruning the “Dead” branches the branches have green inside . Should they still be cut down ? Thank You

In Kentucky both in big pots, we are freezing them too bad I’m guessing because one is all new growth now buds on old stems and one is on strike all together plant them in ground I’m guessing ?

If a branch has some leaf growth on the upper end but nothing in the middle, is it worth saving that branch? Is it just that the buds in the middle got zapped? If the wood in the middle is also green on a scratch test, it will put on new buds in the fall? Thank you! One of my Endless Summer has branches that are dead looking and the rest have leaves and blooms that are right up against the branch. There also are blooms that are down near the crown of the plant. Will these reset after they've had some time to recover over a couple of years?

i am new to growing Hydrangeas. Its October here in England and the leaves have died off. I was concerned the plant was dying but it looks like i will have new growth between now and christmas if i understand you correctly.

Help….my hydrangeas have buds that turned black with a late frost in mid May. What can I do now in early June to help revive the plant and possibly get some blooms or just to clean up the plant?
@KellyLehman2 жыл бұрын
Hi Grace , my hydrangeas were also affected by a winter frost . If they are a hydrangea variety that has two sets of bloom times like the endless summer , your second set of blooms should still come in late summer . If they are a hydrangea that only comes in on the old wood stems that got zapped , you may have to wait for blooms next year . Either way, cut out the brown stems that have no new green growth on them so the hydrangea can focus on the newer green stems . Good luck

Really enjoying your video's. thank you very much for all your hard work, if you are unsure if any woody stems are dead or alive, just scrape the bark with your thumbnail to expose the soft tissue, if it's green its alive.😁

I have 5 hydrangeas that I had to move. They were getting allot of sun and wilting. I moved them in April. All the plants have long dead looking tall stems and growth at the base just like yours. Should I cut them?

Here is some information I found online about hydrangea pests . Hope it is helpful . Japanese beetles You’ll know Japanese beetles have arrived when you see chewed, holey leaves-and you can’t miss seeing these large insects with metallic green bodies and coppery-brown wings. They seem to prefer oakleaf hydrangeas to other types. The beetles move slowly in the mornings, so that’s a good time to shake them off your plants and into a bucket of soapy water. You can also handpick them. Otherwise, try Neem or pyrethrum before stepping up to more powerful insecticides. Japanese beetle traps use pheromones to catch these pests, but they often attract even more from surrounding areas. Spider mites Almost invisible to the naked eye, spider mites cause deformed growth, especially on new stems. While you may not see the mites without a magnifying glass, you’ll recognize their presence by the webs they make between leaves. Since spider mites like hot, dry conditions, you can often control them by keeping your hydrangeas well watered, and by blasting them with water from the hose every couple of days. Many predators eat spider mites, including ladybugs, so use insecticides as a last resort. You don’t want to kill off insects that aren’t doing any harm and that may provide some natural pest control. Source ➡️ hgtv.com
