Ever since PS Home shut down back in 2015 on PlayStation 3, dedicated fans have been working towards restoring the original service. And thanks to the hardworking team at Destination Home, and all the cache donators, they released a closed beta late last year. And now, 8 years later -- they've launched a second beta that has let more people in, and it really does feel like Home again. Join me in exploring the new spaces, games, and cosmetics they restored. It's like 2008 all over again, financial crisis and all!

Destination Home’s Discord can be found here: discord.com/invite/PlayStationHome They’ll have links to the guides and everything needed if you want to jump back into Home on native PS3 hardware and RPCS3. And as always, if you have a console with Home already installed, don’t delete it! Donate your data so they can continue restoring parts of the service that might be lost.

@@SkippyJr_xBee Well nowadays, yes our internet is much faster and miles ahead compared to 2008 standards. Even then having 30x faster internet in the late 2000s would cost almost as close to $250.00 per month just to get to the same speed as what Wi-Fi and 5G does nowadays. Back then, we still used 3G and Broadband Internet as our way to be connected to the servers (Even phones still used 3G back in the day and 32GB SD Cards were around $40.00 to even buy. Heck, 250GB cards back in 2008 costed over $300.00 to even get one, now they only cost half of that). 4G around the time this game came out became a new thing into the market but it wasn't really adopted until the early 2010s. And then 5G didn't come out until 2017/2018 at least, and wasn't adopted fully until 2020/2021.

The real beauty of Home was that the creators really wanted people to play and enjoy. There was no need to spend, but you could do if you wanted to; the cost was minimal and you could get a great experience just hanging out or chilling in ways that you couldn't in real life. When real life got you down you could usually go to your HOME space and simply wander around, take part in designing your own space and avatar; take photos and discover all sorts of content related to the games you played - and even those you didn't have to some extent by playing mini games within those worlds. They may have seemed like add-ons or reasons to make purchases to some, but the atmosphere was just one of discovery; for there was SO much you could do. And, with new content being added all the time (both free and paid for) it always was somewhere you could go and just drop in to spend some time away from the worries (and stresses) there were in your real life. It was always somewhere which was yours and pleasant to be at. Just saying!

Collecting the orbs in Aurora was great to do - each one had a different attribute and the locations and types were changed daily. It was a great way to boost the points and rankings. Of course back then it was something you *wanted* to do - as were a lot of the other things in Home also. They were not things you HAD to do, but you found new things all the time and could just visit and chill on the side - or join in if you wanted to - there wasn't any obligation, of course. Incidentally, just wandering around and taking in the sights and sounds was good also. Some alone time in some of the places was always great too - as it was almost like being there and just watching and relaxing. (Not something you could necessarily do in real life; there were no hassles and I experienced nothing to worry or disturb, people would generally let you do what you wanted, which was really nice!). (The 'whoosh' you experienced was you being transported to another part of the island), which was great for finding the orbs and using their 'magic'. It was a fun find and discover game, you never knew if you'd be able to achieve the finding of them all or not). Sorry, long comment and probably nothing new learned; it's just some things were really awesome and brings back some great memories!

Dude, No lie. This has brought so much nostalgic memories and a lot of depression to follow. Home to me wasn't much since I was a pre-teen around that time but even still, It was something that I have always appreciated growing up with it as the years came by. Understanding the whole concept of what was originally the metaverse turned into a game was beyond a perfect idea Sony once had. To be able to have a home you can create, visit worlds with minigames and other players roaming dedicated to a certain game/place/theme was just unheard of around that time especially with tv/movies and the reveal of many games really brought not only users together but Companies and even Sony itself closer to a player base like never before. Here's hoping there will be a new PS home for not only PS5 but for every console and crossplay as well. Imagine seeing the possibility of having all Nintendo, PC, PlayStation, and Xbox players all connect to a platform like Home and all just bond over movies, games, trailers, etc while interacting with the theme worlds or the plaza. After a game of whatever, just hop to go bowling or minigolf? Sony really had something...

Well unfortunately for companies nowadays they prefer live service and other ways to monetize content instead of doing Home that would last a lifetime but dry up the money quicker due to server costs. Sometimes it's just not worth it. But again, I do like to see it come back someday, even if it's more likely that they'll never do it after the failure of the metaverse Facebook tried to create.

@@JokerX350 true. Don't get me wrong, I'm loving my PS5 so far and having a blast with it. It just doesn't feel as social as PS4 was. Even compared with PS3, with the PS Home. PS5 really needs a major update centered on social features, I'm just not sure Sony wants it. The communities on PS4 were awesome. Sony could really build it from scratch now. It hurts because now, more than ever, it's so easy and fast on PS5 to just take pics, clips, edit them and sharing. I would love we could have a feed of these sharings for each player on their profiles, then a main feed on the PS menu like we had in PS4, then communities for each games or private communities that could be created among friends. Such a shame there isn't anything like these features on PS5, it's a severe downgrade from PS4.

I would also say it took all my x-employers money 😂, so I can’t imagine the data on my old PlayStations.

This should have been on ps4 and ps5 too I remember skipping school just to play this game, I remember hours spent at the arcade, I remember playing red bull air race for hours hoping i'd break the record, I remember staying in the square up late chatting to people, I remember skating on ice when it was christmas, I remember my house at the port and my house at the Audi ski resort, I remember spending time in the mall looking for thrills people didn't know about, I remember watching sunsets in the island map or enjoying the marvelous landscape of Aurora Man I sure miss those days, but I miss more there isn't a way to connect with people anymore, nobody uses in-game chat in games, there isn't an app or game on PlayStation just to chat to other people since they got rid of communities. I haven't made any new friends since they took communities apart from ps4, ps5 feels so lonely at least for me

This is preservation done right I still find it silly that Sony can’t preserve ps3 games but fans can for free I get why the architecture was weird but still if fans can solve stuff like home Sony can solve a lot of the major ps3 titles or at least remaster/remake them

I hope they're able to restore all the content. I spent way too much time as a broke kid playing the uncharted 3 minigame, sodium and its wipeout clone, even that amusement park with all the minigames. It was such a big part of the ps3 experience for me and the way that sony pretends it doesn't exist makes me so glad this project is happening.

I have a lot of fond memories of the years experiencing Home. Not playing, but truly experiencing it because it really was an experience. So, it's great to see it making a promising return. I joined the original Home's closed beta about a few months before it became open beta. So, sometime during the summer of 2008 iirc. I met a lot of psn friends from it. Hearing the bowling alley music again brought some old memories back. I remember trying to beat 16 levels of Ice Breaker (essentially a knock-off version of Breakout) in the arcades inside the alley for the ice breaker boots cosmetic and succeeding. Same with the echochrome outfit that came with the Echochrome game, 6:07 , which looked like a white lay figure. Both items sort of became "uniforms" for different groups - the Echochrome outfit in particular was often used by the Homeling alien avatar groups because it looked like pristine space suits and then the people that liked to find ways to clip out of bounds in Home's maps (glitchers) tended to like the ice breaker boots because of their perceived prestige of having to beat a challenge. With the Homelings in particular, part of the "initiation" into the group was taking the initiate into the bowling alley so that they can acquire their "space suit" from the Echochrome game and then taking them into a "mothership", which was really just a bland stark white home clubhouse, to tour it. Honestly, that was the fun part about home, that people found ways - no matter how ridiculous and silly - to make fun out of it even with its bare bone offerings during Home's beginning. Of course, being an online environment there was also bits of e-drama, between groups or individuals. However, the positive memories of that digital landscape outweigh the negatives. In all, they were good times.

Sounds like I need to get myself a 2nd PS3 to mod (since I'm terrified of modding my main PS3 and getting my PSN account banned). I hope this project can preserve not just the US Home too. There are plenty of Europe exclusive things I'd love to see brought back.
