i wish bringing back Manfred had more on Emmrich conquering his fear of death. helping him become a lich just seems so… extreme. and he still fears death as a lich, just not his own. he’s afraid of others dying and now he’s gonna have to experience an eternity of that which is absolutely tragic.

I mean I think the saving manfred ending helped him conquer his fear of death by seeing how his legacy will live on through Manfred. Conversely I think the lichdom ending taught him to accept the passing of others, starting with Manfred. He even says he will be ready to accept outliving Rook and will carry the memory of Rook on forever. Though I think the Lich ending is supposed to be the “bad” option. Similar to iron bull choosing the Qun over his team. Power of friendship and love is more important and all that.

@@BBS-dl1lt funny enough, in the IronBull situation i usually help the Qun over his team. It isnt even because im playing a morally good or bad character, just doesn't make sense to help his squad when he sells it to us that they are the best and should be able to handle this

@@henrymcbark7337I mean I think part of that is the power trip that playing a protagonist in this world gives you. You still need to keep a realistic sense of what’s survivable and what isn’t. Being overrun by Venatori, both mages and fighters, wasn’t going to be a survivable situation. Plus the game makes it clear they will not survive. Plus the Qunari kinda suck. I’m glad veilguard got back on track to portraying them as villains. They are bad for Thedas. I loved their portrayal in dragon age 2 the most.

@@henrymcbark7337 It guarantees that Iron Bull will betray the player in Trespasser though. We don't even get to see the Qun's full contribution to Inquisition so to me, it's never really worth it to support the Qun.

I don’t think it’s addressed clearly, but it does seem like he’s conquered it. He still fears death at least a little, but he’s also proud to mentor Manfred to carry on as his protege and legacy. A piece of him will always live on in Manfred

Liches are cool in every fantasy universe. Dragon Age has an interesting interpretation of necromancy as a whole. Necromancy is always presented as scary but not evil magic.

Necromancy is a controversial subject in Southern Thedas but not in Northern Thedas. They don’t treat it as “oooh spooky scary undead magic”. It is a magic like others.

I went Lich as it feels like the natural progress of his character, and his life work. The fact he could honour Manfred's sacrifice meant he was ready to take up the mantle he has dreamed of, and it seems cruel to deny him his lifelong ambition.

It's Astarion's choice all over again isn't it............. granted, a much lighter version of it, but still. Power, so long dreamed of, versus the sacrifice of other lives. In Astarion's case, so many, in this case, just one but so dear. Biggest difference is that Lichdom doesn't change his character, but it's tragic in other ways (especially if you're romancing him and he voices fears of outliving you). In both cases, I think choosing life over power is the right decision, but it's much harder here somehow. Maybe because I love a great skeleton XD

So there is like an entire city of liches that are mega super mages, and they have all these spirits of the fade and death that are intelligent and protective, and there are guardian spirits that can just appear and disappear, and none of that actually matters in the plot of the game besides this comparatively small side quest? Like why can't we have an army of liches showing up to cast crazy necromancy at the dragons and etc?

Seems kinda like going up against the type you're weak towards. Two ancient elvhen sorcerers who used to be spirits themselves and have god-tier magical powers enhanced by the Taint. Seems like it wouldn't be hard for them to reverse the magic that made them that way and either make them mortal again or just fall apart into a pile of bones. Or even infect them with the taint and then control them like they do the darkspawn.

IMHO Rook should "pick" outcome by interactions with companion plus how strong their bond is. Like support passion to become a lich, or show interest in Manfred like a person. Because you just simply said that Emmerich becoming a lich terrified Rook, and literally after you can pick that option, it is strange and illogical at least.

Necromancy has never been viewed as evil in dragon age games. Nevarra has always housed a sect of necromancers and because of that are the only society in Thedas that do not burn their dead. Blood magic on the other hand is what everyone considers evil and wrong. Completely different.

@ undead can occur from spirits or demons animating a corpse. That’s not necessarily the results of a necromancer. There are bad necromancers out there, the man who cut up Hawke’s mother, but he was also using blood magic for that, not just necromancy. Necromancy in and of itself is a fairly neutral school of magic. Much of their work is pacifying undead. The undead at crestwood are a result of the angry dead (due to the mayor drowning the town during the blight) being reanimated by spirits and demons due to the breach. There was a massive fade rift below the lake. Cassandra specifically talks about the Mortalitassi of Nevarra and the inquisitor can even play as one. It’s definitely a bit darker than other schools of magic, but not evil like blood magic.

@mnorbert4188 platinumed all 3 even own the books/comics. Also 3 games worth of lore would have anyform of undead, abominations killed/destroyed regardless of alignment. Not just blood magic ether all. The only exceptions being necromancers becuase their practices are for combat of the dead in most cases. Most common in the necropolus. Them making litchs and undead servants(willing or not) a thing destroys the collective lore established before this current installment

Throughout the Dragon Age series, necromancy was never presented as evil that's the difference between necromancy and blood magic. The necromancy is only presented as scary or unsettling. The educated population could tell the difference between Necromancer and blood magic.

Awkward, Dragon Age has never made Necromancy seem evil - an entire culture even uses necromancy as a way to maintain their honored dead (Nevarra and their Grand Necropolis). If you didn't play ANY of the Dragon Age games, just say that next time.
