Habits to get into and maintain: 1. Regularly challenge and stimulate your brain. 2. Drink plenty of water (and less alcohol, for that matter). 3. Address the stress. 4. Cut out the salt (and sugar, for that matter). 5. Focus on one thing at a time (and cut out distractions). 6. Decrease screen time, especially before bed. 7. Sit / stand up straight.

I find myself checking all of these as symptoms of mine. It's kind of funny how one bad habit actually leads to several others... for example, I suffer from depression which causes a significant amount of stress in my daily life. Then because I feel so stressed out, I'm too exhausted to do anything so I resort just hunching over my phone, endlessly scrolling instead of engaging in something more stimulating... and as people with depression also know, your diet tends to suffer a little too The whole thing just kinda cycles from one underlying and overwhelming issue😅

So if I’m understanding this correctly, a considerable number of people who have computer/tech-related jobs are likely killing their brains at a faster rate because: - work on computer/phone usually leads to poor posture - work usually follows them home, results in more stress -> few breaks in work = little time to make time for self-care - work & stress (possibly relax time too) = more screen time - salty snacks and caffeine drinks = dehydration This is a worrying cycle, considering these all can feed into each other so easily. Also leads to a collection of muscular stresses within the body.

The issue with studies is they are often affected by bias or outside influences not considered in the study. Consuming too much salt causing damage to the brain is likely true if the person is also not hydrating, but salt is also extremely important for helping the body store water, which helps the brain. Too much screen time is another one. I feel like the better question is "Which comes first, the decreased cortex thickness or the preference for screen time?" Do people with thinner cortexes prefer screens because they're easier for them to comprehend? Or do the screens actually cause the thinner cortexes?

I think that the thinner cortex issue with people having excessive screen time stems not form the screen time itself, but rather, from how they utilize said time. If a person is using their device as a "zombie box", constantly feeding it useless information, or things for "shits and giggles" (such as memes, news, uninspiring video game playthroughs, etc.), naturally, they don't get to exercise their brain while at it. They shut it down, and let it roll. If person would spend more time researching stuff, solving problems, or otherwise tinkering or experimenting with something on their machine, even if in a video game, I think they would not suffer this issue, see no reason why. So, in my eyes, this is definitely a case of correlation, not causation.

Very well said. In the end, technology is just a tool, a means to an end, and how we utilize it is the most important factor. At the same time, with the rise of complex algorithms whose sole purpose is to attract people to their apps, it is becoming increasingly difficult to use technology in a healthy manner.

Is it possible to get "Medical Alert" ? My father used to have that & he had a watch (or you can choose a necklace) plus there is a small device that interacts speaking with the person. It's wonderful because they just push a button on their watch or necklace & if they don't answer the small device right away (which sits on a table) - the people at medical alert will alert you and call an ambulance if necessary, plus you can keep a house key in a Lockbox so they can get inside to help.

Too much water can harm your brain as well, causing conditions that can also harm your brain like water intoxication, or water toxicity. The recommendation of 8 glasses a day is needlessly confusing but that actually represents about two liters a day. Another way to monitor this is by urine color: it should be pale yellow, not dark, or clear.

@@XplosivDS Thanks for the clarification (I've adjusted my previous comment.) The color guideline should be helpful for anyone. I just have one question, can spending a good amount of time on my computer per day (school wise) equate to similar problems with too much screen time?

@Channel Name I wouldn’t be surprised either and it does make sense. Thankfully I’ve stayed far away from the most toxic parts of Social Media (like Twitter, Facebook, and definitely Tic Tock) and have little interest in mobile games so I think I’m in the clear other than loving to write and having the habit of staying up late at night digital drawing. I hope you have a good day and wish you luck.

I do push away my stress a lot. I also use a lot of screen time, but I’m really trying to reduec this. The reason why I’m using a lot of screen time is because I don’t always get out of the house because of being totally blind. But when my staff comes or when my behavioral consultant comes, I take every advantage of those oportunities and get out as often as I can. Or when my mom is off of work, I ask her if we are doing anything. Don’t get me wrong, I do practicing singing, and I play my piano and other musical instruments in my house. I have a sensory space downstairs, I listen to Soundscapes, I watch gameshows, I read a lot. When it’s nice out, I go outside on my swing. But I feel like I should have a life.

I’m guilty of too much screen time right now. Been out of work to let myself heal and recover and it’s been too long. Also, could you guys maybe do a video about the side effects of…. Dealing with a phobia? Example: just had a wicked thunderstorm early this morning and it sent me panicking and spiked my heart rate. I’m terrified of thunder. Sadly, I know exactly what causes thunder, just, my brontophobia takes over and I hate it. I’m sure it’s just anxiety really. Still. I’m also still a bit jumpy today with any sort of rumble/thump. Let me edgy even though it’s been many hours later. Heck. One time, I had thunder crack overhead when I lived at my parents’ place and I made a weird, terrified noise. I don’t think gentle exposure is an option either. Really really hate loud noise

ive had a bad posture for a long time, some other stuff were the issue as well but one thing a physiotherapist once said really struck with me and i think its one of the best things a doctor told be about : your posture is A LOT affected by how you feel. so if you are sad depressed loneley etc you will hunche over , make yourself smaller, leave your shoulders hanging etc. feeling happieness, pride, n other happy emotions changes it completely to a confident upright good posture another top 1 sentence was : your best sitting position/ posture is the NEXT one - meaning that even having a good upright posture can be BAD if you maintain it for too long. the human body is designed to move and not stay still the whole time. give them muscles a good stretch adn keep changing your positions (well maybe not hunche over completely for too long since that puts a LOOOOOT pressure on your spine)

It gets darker when I stay up too late working on screen devices like laptop or my iPad.

Some screens can damage your eyes. Maybe consider an e-ink tablet? For your laptop getting a screen with eye care features by either buying a new laptop or replacing the screen might improve things. There are also computer-glasses that block the heat from screens and thereby protect your eyes from drying out.

I really liked this video. It did spook me alot though since there are some things here that I am familiar with. I usually give my brain a challenge through homework and daily education. School basically. And I keep my grades in check by making sure they dont go below the 80s. I used to not hydrate myself properly back during 6th and 7th grade but I hydrate myself a lot better now. I dont have chronic stress(i searched up what chronic stress is) so the third habit is something I dont have. Its hard to know for myself if im consuming too much salt or not, as I am skinny and need to gain weight as of right now. I also eat a variety of things when im hungry, from fruit to bread to candy. I will eat anything as a "snack". I dont usually multi-task. I usually take things my pace and sometimes work unfortunately slow, but I do ask questions a lot at school though. The ones I see are most familiar to me on this list are slouching and screen time 😬. I am aware now that I think about it that I DEFINITELY do not do at least 7 hours of screen time, it can be over 10 hours of screen time alot of the time. In and out of school. So thanks for letting me know about that habit. I do also slouch during school, of course because its boring as heck. I do still know that school is good for everyone and learning is a vital part of making money and living our lives. However slouching can be fixed primarily easily, so i can take care of that problem first and then move on to the next. Thank you for making this video. It made me learn a couple things today! 🙂

I have a question, is it possible to recover from these conditions when you start adapting as soon as possible, or is your brain going to be permanently affected. I'm 16 and my cognitive functions are drastically declining while I'm also checking multiple boxes from the video. I don't hydrate myself regularly, Screen time is well over 7 hours, I don't do anything to stimulate my brain anymore which I'm desperately trying to improve but failing to lack of motivation for anything and everything. I'm horrified of the aspect of living my life while my mind is constantly trying to think through mud and really hope the reversal of these effects is possible at my current age.

Is it forbidden to ask interested questions? This channel is for educational purposes and any good education should touch your curiosity and therefore motivate you to think and ask questions about it. So trying to hinder anyone to ask interested questions is the exact opposite. Don’t be so judgemental and encourage others instead to reflect on their behaviour.
