Ren covers ME in his 8 Chapters, each one is 15-20 minutes long, with a song at the end. He was treated as a Hypochondriac & generally let down by the Medical Community, misdiagnosed for 8 years. Thanks for seeing things from both sides.

One of the most heartening things a professor said during a consultation is: 'It's important that cross discipline medical treatment professionals listen carefully when patients try to explain their symptoms, because in a tricky/complex case, you are the world's leading expert on what's wrong with you'.

Great reaction, as was your reaction to 'Hi Ren'. Another song by Ren that you might like to react to would be 'Chalk Outlines'. That song takes up the issue of the prescription of medications which may dull the feelings and mask the symptoms, but do not get at the root cause of the problem. 'Chalk Outlines' is sung beautifully by Ren and his friend (the artist Chinchilla), not a rap track like the previous two reactions, which will give you more insight into Ren's incredible talent. I hope that your own health improves; you are in our thoughts.

Great reaction not many people can see this personally from both sides of the fence. “Chalk Outlines” deals with more of the internal struggles with mental health issues would love to see a reaction to that. If you want to know more about RENs struggles his Chapters series are great to watch and I think you’d be able to relate to his story more than you already do. Thanks for taking the time to make this video

Once again Dani, thank-you so much for being willing to show your vulnerability by sharing part of your own personal health journey and industrialized medical system experiences. I suffered a brain injury in 2020; the pressure on doctors to keep the conveyor belt moving, providing diagnosis as expeditiously as possible leads to obvious problems for all involved. The systems are breaking or broken, but they're the only ones we have. On a lighter note, as you've discovered, Ren's fan base is quite loyal, loving and proud. Wynand Fourie, a South African musician was moved by Ren's music and a down turn in his health as a result of symptom resurgence. He wrote a beautiful song of hope and support for Ren, called Love's Healing (A Song for Ren) and enlisted the support of the 'Renegades' to contribute their voices to his project. It's a beautiful song of hope and inspiration that, I believe was written for Ren and all. It would be nice to see you react to it. Enjoy! 🤕🥰😃

It is important that our medical industry sees this viewpoint from Ren and many of us who are treated as a profit, what can a doctor gain including numbers, accomplishments, diagnosing medications we don't need that will eventually damage our liver, kidneys and other organs. Then being so robotic that a patient has a limited time limit before the next visit. Ren is sharing his experience of being misdiagnosed when he had Lyme Disease. Imagine how many were also misdiagnosed, given ABA and ableist judgements and yet the patients continue to battle their struggles and being ignored.

I am also ME/CFS sufferer. I went 41 years undiagnosed from when the doctors diagnosed me from when they suspect I contracted ME (a bout of pnuemonia as a child). The NHS have been very supportive of me from my diagnosis upto about 5 years ago when our wonderful health service was deliberately gutted. Fortunately the mental side of my illness is fairly under control, but the physical side of the illness is a day to day adventure. Ren's videos has done as much as any individual to help me understand my illness. This has been enhanced by the reactions of Hi Ren and Sick Boi by medical professionals. I particularly value your reactions as you have first hand experience as both a patient and a psychologist. Thank you for your time and your words of wisdom which have added plenty of real world understanding to Ren's brilliant lyrisism.

Great to see you continuing your Ren discovery Dr Danielle. You certainly hit on a few things that I did watching Sick Boi and knowing a few things about Ren's history. His mis-diagnosis with Lyme Disease as you mention, the ongoing struggles he has had with chronic autoimmunity and having that go untreated effectively for an extended period. Being essentially bed-ridden by the effects of that does certainly have a spiral effect on both physical and mental health without doubt, as I am sure you would agree the brain (and the mind) is an incredible and incredibly powerful organ. Feeling like his illness was being dismissed or misunderstood by medical community must have been very disheartening indeed. Couple that with the death by suicide of a close friend of his Joe, and not long after another friend through an accident Callum. The interruption of his education at Bath Spa University and losing a record deal because of his physical limitations stemming from his being struck with Lyme Disease and its effects. It is no wonder that he created songs like Hi Ren, Sick Boi and as I am sure you will discover Su!cide and others. But I personally consider these to be a testament to him and the struggle he has gone through and survived with his humanity, insight and no small bit of humour as comes through in some of his other songs intact.

Thank you for another compassionate reaction. Ren was diagnosed with ME/CFS before later being diagnosed with Lyme. Ren did an interesting interview on the Zach Sang show, and the conversation touched on the interplay between physical and mental health. He has quite a nuanced view of his condition, which doesn't all fit in this one song. They also talk about the pig's head. For a deeper dive into the history of his illness and how it has affected all areas of his life, his 8 autobiographical Chapters are very interesting and affecting. I'd love to see you continue to react to Ren's music - there is so much that would be relevant to you both as a patient and a professional. Particularly relevant songs: Seven Sins Suic*de/ For Joe Troubles Chalk Outlines, with Chinchilla (live version) How to be Me, with Chinchilla (live version) Diazepam Depression Insomnia Dominoes One Million Subscribers: Defining success (a short, very uplifting speech, not a music video) Crutch ft. Bibi Pocketfull of pain Some positive songs to balance out those more difficult ones: Humble ft. Eden Nash Ocean ft. Eden Nash Power Ready for You Hold On

Thanks for a really insightful reaction. My take is that the therapist is a composite of Ren's experience with the medical profession as a whole and a shout out to the woman playing the therapist role superbly especially when Ren is right in her face and she doesn't flinch! Quite a lot of his work is about his health struggles but in slightly different musical styles which shows what a creative and versatile artist he is. Among my favourites are Genesis, Seven Sins and Troubles. I know YT reacting is not your day job but it would also be nice to see you react to some of his lighter stuff so you can enjoy Ren without your Psychologist 'hat' on! 'Back on 74', 'Uninvited' and any of his work with his busking band 'The big push' from a few years back doing amazing covers of classic rock. Cheers.

The key to understanding Ren's journey through the NHS is the faulty PACE trial that misled clinicians into the belief that ME/CFS and other autoimmune illnesses were purely psychological. This set back research into the actual causes furthering the harm to this patient community to the benefit of the psychiatric community who were gifted this steady stream of uncurable patients. Though having the lowest quality of life scores of any patient group may require some therapy to endure, the gaslighting that there were no underlying physical maladies was unbearable to this underserved cohort. Only the recent wave of long-covid sufferers has caused the NHS to revise their stance and many clinicians still foist the false all-in-your-mind narrative on these autoimmunity patients, often driving them to fatal outcomes.

Thank you for reacting to this, especially given the parts of your history that you've shared. A bit more of Ren's history: Sony Music found him busking (street performing) on London streets when he was around 18 and signed him. When he started getting sick (and not getting better) they dropped him. Ever since he's been independent, which I think has been a blessing for the world as it's highly unlikely that Sony would've let him produce the music he has. Also he was actually bleeding in his brain at the time of this filming.

If you follow Ren you know Sony DIDN'T drop him for getting sick. Ren said himself in the interview with Justin Hawkins. A producer who worked for Sony was interested in signing him. When he became sick he spoke to the producer who allowed him to break from the contract they set up. Ren asked the producer if he could use the songs he wrote for Sony. He allowed him to use the songs that ended up being on the freckled angels album. If anything, the producer needs a thank you coz he could have easily said no.

From what I remember from another video Ren's dad Martin (who's a therapist in the UK) passed an interesting comment about how due to the budget cuts on the mental health side of the NHS nowadays most NHS support in respect of mental health is a overworked nurse with a check list. In cases like ren's where his mental health was the collateral damage of him being given psychiatric drugs due to a wrongful diagnosis people like him are slipping through the system. Another UK Therapist youtuber (therapistreacts) also said similar things, he even said "I hope im not guilty of this".

Great reaction, Dani - keep on being you. Your perspective as someone who has sat on both sides of the consultation table is truly valuable and insightful, and is not one I've seen from any other reactors. You immediately zeroed in on something I hadn't realised, and I've not heard previously - she is simply treating him based on his written record, which could well be wrong - rather than actually engaging with him and finding out how and what he is feeling *right now*. I've watched this video and reactions a hundred times or more, and that was never highlighted before. It's obvious in hindsight, but isn't everything? 🤷‍♂ Us Renegades are a passionate lot - mostly because we see ourselves and our struggles brilliantly expressed in Ren's music. We are all broken in one way or another and Ren just has a knack of saying things that make us go "YES! That's what I've been trying to say." So forgive us if we sometimes get a little pernickety about things like rewinding when you pause and such trivia. We mean well, and I have never encountered a more supportive bunch of strangers in my life. 🤣 Bottom line? You're doing great, and I look forward to hearing your uniquely qualified viewpoint reacting to more Ren stuff. Warning: There are other rabbit holes that we will kinda push you into exploring as you brush near them. 😉 But you'll enjoy them.

Great reaction, I appreciate your insight! When you talk about how the professional is making assumptions when first looking at the chart and hadn't even spoken with the client yet. The biggest example I see with this is the "autism" diagnosis. I put it in quotes because so incredibly often people seem to be given autism diagnoses because they are shy or have other social struggles. I have worked with autism and it is very, very real. But the diagnosing is completely out of control. Anyway, when someone is carrying an autism diagnosis, then almost every struggle that child goes through, oftentimes normal developmental struggles, is lumped in as an expression of the child's autism. This can happen so much that I have seen parents refer to any behavior or emotion in their children as, "their autism." Their autusm flared at school and he flopped a table, for example. I can't even imagine the damage that does to a parent child relationship. I have to help the parent walk that back and start viewing theor child as a human again, not referring to them as a diagnosis. Lastly, I am especially worried about how very clear trauma responses are not seen at all. If the child is crying hysterically and it is some form of deep lack of attachment or similar, it is dismissed as their autism amd they treat it as such. So damaging. Also, real quick, I have spoken to other professionals in Great Britain and it seems your autism diagnosed are coming from the education system instead of it being deeply ingrained in the medical system here in the US? If so you might have a different experience of this as the almighty dollar drives all here in the US and people (not the clinicians themselves, mind you, but the corporations) make billions off of it. And briefly, if anyone wants to read some insightful thoughts on how, "I feels it's not me, it's the world that's sick," then read The Myth of Normal by Gabor Mate. It is through working with peope for so long that I have come to fully believe this. While it does not good to sinply respond as a victim and crumple down (there ARE things we as individuals can do to work toward a healthy life, including mentally), we live in a world that is not conducive to healthy living in this modern world. It is helpful to understand this because at its core (sorry mental health professionals, I know you won't like this), our diagnosis system is client blaming...and that's being kind about it. The system hurts people. Destroys people.

Hi Doc, thanks for this reaction and for sharing your personal experiences. I think that you have a very powerful platform to help people understand these interactions better. I know many healthcare professionals and not one of them would believe that they would treat a patient/client without empathy. I think this song is the perfect bridge between 'Hi Ren' & 'Money Game'. Hi Ren was an inner conflict with his mental health & 'Sick Boi' is like the impression the medical community left on him when he was at his most vulnerable/desperate for their help & they were at their most dismissive of the root of his pain and/or mental health issues, while also letting us know that society in general is dysfunctional from his perspective. 'Money Game' is a deeper dive into his social commentary and takes it to the next level - so worth watching/listening to. For you in particular, I'd recommend 'Crutch', made years earlier when he was at a really low ebb - think your professional take on the impact his issues had on relationships would be of great interest to us all. The 'Jenny & Screech' trilogy must have been shouted to you ad nauseum, by now - attend these outer voices, they're not wrong ! ...and down the rabbit hole you go...

Loving hearing your perspective on all this! Tacking on to what others in your comments have already talked about, I think Chalk Outlines would be another one from Ren where your particular perspective might be valuable. I'm sort of curious, though, if you might have interest in exploring stuff from other artists, as well? I know this hasn't been the point of your channel, historically. That said, I'd be very curious to hear your take on "Four Faces", by The Who -- not so contemporary, but also not on the original release of the album it was from, so it's a lesser-known Who song, and it seems to me to in a way maybe be about Dissociative Identity Disorder, maybe? Or something like it. And so since you have a video from not long ago about that. I figured I might mention the idea. Totally fine with me if you don't have the time and/or interest, and I have no idea how it would go down with folks generally, I just know that I'd appreciate hearing your take, if/when you go down that road. Thanks!

Ren have been sick for so long, but he was a student-not a victime (ref Hi Ren) so he see the full picture of the health propbleme as a full cercle: the greed that drive the medical indistry often take over the need of the patient and by over consuming the planet resource we creat the unbalance that lead to more ppl being sick. ( I'm the virus, you're the virus) If we put ppl health in first place, globale health, we would take better care of our environement, so ppl would be healthier. Sad that the system makes it so hard to consider other potential causes and treatments once the initial diagnosis is made, there should a mechanism that does regular unbiased reviews as if the patient has just arrived. I have been on the wrong end of misdiagnosis and met hostility when trying to question if we were on the right path and explaining why the lack of progress and side effects where worse than what I originally presented with. It also appears some Doctors and consultants are set in their ways, maybe their last qualification was a decade ago from a syllabus written years before that. Electricians and gas engineers have to regularly requalify to keep current why not Doctors and clinicians ?

Really enjoyed hearing the different perspectives you had to this track. Hope you decide to cover more of Ren’s work. Would be really interested to hear your views about the Chapters and Troubles.

Correct, dismissive, then given a script. Those medication sometimes make it worse. Therapy is better with the right person. UK is so difficult to get one when you need help.

How many times a day do you follow up a question with the words, "It's okay if nothing comes up right away?" After a while the patient realises none of the people who are supposed to be helping them has any interest in their health or recovery and is just reading from a script; just going through the motions. The patient responds in kind and communication breaks down. That has been my experience with the mental health system in the UK. That sentence in particular, "It's okay if nothing comes up right away," is the phrase that makes me give up all hope whenever I'm shunted off to a new mental health professional. It's so cold but it's always delivered in a faux sing-song, friendly tone. It makes me shudder.

Just for more context, because "he was misdiagnosed" doesn't give a full picture - When Ren first got sick he was on a 6 month wait list and then got his bipolar diagnosis from a 5 question survey and a 20 minute consult. The medications they put him on really messed him up and they'd just tell him to wait out the side effects. After a year or so, a psychologist told him he wasn't bipolar and referred him to an ME support group that was also unhelpful. More struggle for years where they wrote him down as a hypochondriac with mental illness. Then Ren got himself diagnosed out of country after 6 years and the NHS wouldn't recognize any treatment beyond 2 weeks of antibiotics. A specialist told him he was obsessed and should get a hobby. Everything he's getting done has been out of pocket and largely out of country. He said he's currently taking about £6k in medications a month, alone.

Thank you for your valuable insights (both professionally, and from your own personal experiences with your own health struggles - I hope you're at least partly in remission). Not sure how you feel about transitioning into a reactions channel, but "Troubles" is a good track that goes more into his health journey. Otherwise, if you're looking for something that's not in song-format, as others have mentioned, his Chapters vids are of him talking about his journey. Even if not to react to, it's a great watch. Most of his music to date have some elements of his health struggles embedded in them (although it sounds like his newer stuff is being taken in a different direction from the messaging in the newest release - from his new album Slaughterhouse) so you'd have many to pick from. I'm sure you'll get plenty of recommendations from others here in the comments section with the lore 😂

If you don’t mind sharing, how did you manage to recover from ME/CFS? Was there a particular treatment that worked?

I’m afraid I don’t have any specific treatments that I can recommend. I just seemed to start to recover after having my second child. Apparently a third of people experience improvement in ME/CFS during pregnancy. I think they’re starting to do more research into it now.

Ooh. Great reaction. There are some depressing reactions by therapists out there.. they jump straight to assuming the therapist is accurate in their portrayal of Ren’s problems being factitious. I’ve also just seen that you have some videos on dissociation and DID. I’ve added them to my list to watch when I have the spoons. I experience a level of dissociation as a result of c-ptsd.. but my son has either OSDD or DID.. we’re trying to figure it all out. It’s hard to wrap one’s head around. But having done IFS myself definitely helped with my understanding.

Thanks for the great reaction and insight. I assume you don't want to turn your channel into a music / ren reaction channel but you might want to watch some of his more upbeat songs like Power or Back on 74 in your own time just to see that he has overcome many of his battles and found joy in life and sings about more than just is health, albeit that is something that is an endless journey that continues to have ups and downs. If you do want to react to more of his songs that might be relevant to your expertise, there are so many worth checking out. Some that I can think of include Chalk Outlines, Crutch, Depression, Diazepam, Insomnia, Suicide, Dear God, Everybody Drops.

I'm angry, and always have been all my life I have been, I think that's probably why I love his work ❤ lovely revue of the song, thank you for the video ❤

Usually it's an issue when only the patients can see and identify these issues with the system, because it might say something about the whole system. What does it mean when the doctorates can identify the issues as well?
