That sound of the brake compressors releasing. I grew up in London and must have heard that sound THOUSANDS of times on the London Underground. I never knew what it was ! I do now though. I love the Isle of Wight. What a fantastic video. I was hooked from start to finish. Thank you, much appreciated.

The air compressors operate at line voltage and by the time the tube trains have struggled up the hill to the current terminus at Shanklin, I doubt if it's anywhere near the nominal 630 Volts DC which the Third Rail supposedly provides. Last year the Island Line was down to just one operational two-car train so the service frequency had to be halved to hourly! The spacing of the passing loops could (in theory) allow a regular-interval 20 minute timetable but there simply isn't the demand to justify three trains an hour between Ryde and Shanklin. Hence the current, unbalanced 20 minute/40 minute pattern of departures and arrivals.

love your videos! They really are an essential tool for getting to grips with a new route and train, the way you explain things and the detail you go into is just fantastic. Route builders should be paying you to provide introductory videos that should be shipped with the routes!

+nh83 Thank you! I really appreciate your comment. I only wish the sound quality of the commentary had been better on this video. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I've got close to 100 other videos like this on the channel now with the policy of never using the HUD to drive. It means I have to learn and practice the routes before I record videos on them :)

Excellent video - as always. I would dearly like to see a simulation of the short run from Eastbourne through to Ore via Pev. Cooden and my old (and your) stamping ground, Bexhill - I think one of the most pleasant runs I know.

Absolutely brilliant. I live near Ryde IOW and walk my dogs in the woods / fields near Smallbrook and also on Brading Marshes where the Railway passes by, It really is a fascinating work of art you have produced. At Smallbrook its good to see a 78 yr old ex L. Transport Tube Train next to a 100 yr old Steam Train, but sometimes next to a mere youngster of circa 60 yrs old, No 41298

Thanks! This was my first ever video, made quite some time ago. I really like this line, both in real life and the simulated version in Train Simulator. If you haven't seen it yet, I thought you might like to see the mini-documentary video I also made about this route: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHXPc5iLf757rtk

"To give passengers a smooth ride" The chances of anyone having a smooth ride on the Island Line is non-existent. Not due to drive quality, but track quality, its SO BUMPY!!!!!

Ryde Pier was opened in 1814 to save tourists having to wade ashore through a mile of mud at low tide. The fact that its ironwork is too flimsy (or rusty?) to take the weight of anything heavier than a minibus explains why the eight mile-long "Island Line" was reprieved from the "Beeching Axe" and then electrified in 1966.

Is there no provision for setting up Weak Field on the driver's control desk of the 1938 ex-London Underground deep-level tube trains which currently operate on the IoW "Island Line" between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin?

My Grandparents lived at Brading and As my Grandfather had something to do with the the railway when I was about 6 or 7 (1952/3) I was allowed to ride in the steam engine cabin to Sanddown where my uncle lived. It wouldn't be allowed now!

What an interesting video! I got started into Train Simulator exactly one month ago with the American Sacramento Northern route, and now my interest in expanding my route collection brought me to this video. And it makes me realize how badly I drive my trains when I'm not under the pressure of scoring in scenarios! I admit I use the HUD all the time, the routes I own are way too long to memorize in just a month, but I guess I'll eventually learn them over time if I keep playing. Searching for visual references is something very common in racing simulators. I really like the way you describe the route and the operation of the train.
@megarycesz95624 жыл бұрын
I play a month from now and I already do not use HUD! It feels amazing without using it. Only on some routes I use the minimalistic one. Happy driving!
@danthefryingpan9637 жыл бұрын
Do you drive the route twice to get the external shots? Because at Sandown you came into the platform twice and the other service was leaving again.

@KempSimon4 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that the line speed in both directions drops from 45mph to 30mph through the points just north of Smallbrook Junction where the single track from Sandown becomes double as far as the north end of Ryde Tunnel!

@PTGRail9 жыл бұрын
Crusher UK2013 Thank you :) To change the FOV.. right click on the game in your Steam library, then click on either properties or settings. I can't remember which of those two it's called. Then go to the box which says 'Set Launch Options'.. click that and then put in there ' -SetFOV=85 '.. you can change the number to whatever suits you.

Hi, I'm new to these videos and find them totally absorbing. From time to time reference is made to HUD; I suppose this means 'Head Up Display', but what does it do on Train Sim? Do real locos have HUD?
@PTGRail6 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you enjoy these videos! :) The HUD is indeed the heads up display. In Train Simulator, it shows the track ahead of you, with the upcoming speed limits and stations. In real life, drivers don’t have this and have to learn the route - the purpose of these videos! :)

Buy yourself a Cheap Day Return (with Network Card) from Ramsgate to Portsmouth Harbour (irrespective of which station you actually join your train at between these two points) and change at Ashford International for Brighton and at Brighton for Portsmouth Harbour. At Portsmouth Harbour you interchange for the Wightlink FastCat ferry to Ryde Pier Head. The crossing of Spithead takes about 25 minutes and if the weather is fine it's well worth going up top to enjoy the view from the sun deck!
