@cheez190311 ай бұрын
@@pirds102010 feel like the comment is still valid doe, he is using dense philosophy coupled with unfalsifiable claims to justify his behaviour. He claims that humans have a sould that makes us different from any other animal, this can't be known, or at the very least it isn't knon right now. With some knowledge of evolutionary biology there are reasons to even believe that animals would feel pain to a deeper extent than humans, this is speculation but it is based in the fact that we can avoid undesirable stuff (predators, or any harm) in huge part by our intelligence/ability to abstract, since animals can't do this, it makes sense to believe that they would rely more on their crude physical sensations such as pain to avoid such harms. He says animals are just mechanical biological robots but we share a common ancestor with every single life form, the general hardware we have has been developed in an identically before we split with other apes in the evolutionary tree, meaning that when it comes to general sensations, pain is probably a shared thing with most animals, given that it is a sensation that would promote evolution (as an example people that don't feel pain are in risk of having many health problems/injuries that could kill them if not rutinely checked) He also says morality is ultimately just personal preference (I don't think ed readily agreed) which is true, or at least I share that opinion, this doesn't invalidate morality, even if relative and just an random evolutionary trait that helped us survive, the fact is that it is still there, it still exists, whether objective or subjective, and acting in disacordance with it is inmoral by definition, even if subjective. It kinda seems like this guy probs just got a intro class to philosophy and he used this to post-hoc rationalise, he did say some animal treatment is cruel, so despite animals just being mechanical robots, they still hold some moral consideration? Surely if what he values if the sould, and animals lack this, he wouldn't extend moral value to them. I think he probably has the normal intuition that harming animals is fucked up but this is in tension with his actions, and his metaphysical views on souls act as a way to overcomplicate animal rights. Long response, tl:dr, scientifically there is no reason to believe we are significantly different from animals, at least in crude pain sensations and other things, the big difference is the ability to abstract and stuff like language. Morality being subjective doesn't matter and he probably is using intro philosophy knowledge to in a way post hoc justify his actions, through a worldview that isn't supported by any empirical method of study or science, it doesn't even stem from non-experiential deductive or inductive logic.

You will understand, dog wont! Even tho you maybe never have been attacked by knife, you will acknowledge the threat. Animal wont UNLESS it has not experienced it before. But there is also a term for this, and it is called training. If dog learns that the gun means threat, and i switch to AK47 dog, again, wont understand what does it means. Human will! His point is clear. Animals are not at the same level as humans are. Thinking that they are is not logical. Humans have more potential for everything, they have more intellect, and dont react mostly on their instincts. Animals wont get this level of evolution in next thousands of years. Even if we dont interfere, most of the species wont evolve and will stay as animals due to many other factors. Diseases, other predators etc...

Sam I don’t believe in the soul either, that has absolutely nothing to do with anything. Life’s value doesn’t stem from an outsiders opinion. Neither you or I can claim that life has no value, because it is the individuals will to live that dictates the value of their life. You can on the other hand argue that from a broader perspective individuals life doesn’t have any value. Anyone of us can die any day, and many people die every day without it affecting the state of the world. Same goes for animals of course. But value of life isn’t based on value in such a broad scale. Laws aren’t written based on if you murder less than 2% of the countries population it’s ok, for a reason. I have serious doubts that anyone actually believe life has no value if you start to dissect their arguments. It is just something lost teenagers and meat eaters claim ;)

How can you say it's a hyperbole when I didn't give any numbers at all? One person a day switching to veganism means it's growing. A net gain of 1 person per year going vegan means it's growing. You cannot say I am using a hyperbole when I gave you zero numbers. What I can do though, is tell you that in 3 years veganism grew 600% in the US alone. I think you sorely misunderstand the growth of veganism across the globe. Why do you think so many companies are adopting plant based meals? 2.7% of the US is not miniscule, that's roughly 10 million people. 14% of the world is not miniscule. That is roughly 1,074,360,000 people. Is that miniscule to you? It seems you have a guttural reaction to these facts because you don't want to be on the wrong side of the issue. @piggychocostitch56794 жыл бұрын
@Prairiedoggen In response to the website link - it states that plants have a similar response to us when they are damaged, not that they feel pain. It actually states that "Plants don’t have nervous systems" - the sensation of pain is transmitted through nerves and so without a nervous system, plants cannot feel pain. And as for the video - he says himself that the 'screams' heard from plants when they are damaged are caused by gas bubbles and it is not known if they are actually speaking or not. And unlike animals, plants no not have a brain. They cannot feel pain, and they cannot experience emotional responses. But, even if I am wrong, even if plants 'scream', - it is widely known that animals experience pain, grief and fear and can be lastingly traumatised by things they experience. That is a fact, and I don't want to be any part of that if I can help it.

Alice's shelter Ed may not be the best but he's one of the most calm and composed. Unfortunately he does miss quite a few points and I agree he drops the ball in any kind of religious or spiritual discussion. He could really learn from Gary Yourofsky's speeches or Joey Carbstrong's debates on that topic, as both of them not only understand spirituality as opposed to organized religion, but are extremely open-minded to the concept & have well-thought out proper responses.
@alicesshelter97196 жыл бұрын
@@harveyplantharvester1502 i don't know who gary yourofsky is. But from what I saw Joey is worse at religious arguments. When the opponent has a completly different worldview Joey is just getting frustrated (i'm not against him at all, ge's doing a good thing, it's just sometimes he seems a bit agressive though i totally understand how those ppl might make u mad) When Ed tries to find issues, very politely.
@harveyplantharvester15026 жыл бұрын
Joey's very passionate and transparent so you can easily read his emotions, but he has a great ability to hold his composure when he's being attacked on all sides, like on TV shows. He also has a very impressive record of convincing people to become vegan, so I'd hardly say he was "worse" at anything. It would literally take you 2 seconds to find out who Gary Yourofsky is just by putting his name in a youtube search. He paved the way for these activists and practically convinced the whole country of Israel to go vegan.

That's wrong, Meshari. We live in a civilized world due to morals, some of which were meaningful and universally agreed upon enough to become laws. Morals are the baseline of what society believes is right and wrong and with inspection they guide us in maximizing our own well being. They give us the ability to experience lives significantly better than what is available through chaos and nature alone.
@Matt-ww9wv6 жыл бұрын
Meshari, one topic at a time. You said there is no need for morals without God so I told you that most humans value civilization through human rights which can exist with or without a God. You agree, right?
@Matt-ww9wv6 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't you say believing in human rights is a moral position? If there's no need for morality why not abandon all laws? Of course, this is opinions. But they consistent and they aim to maximize well being and minimize suffering. We can measure whether something is successful in that regard quite easily.
