A neat detail is that Aiden tells you Samara's evil right away. You're told she killed the horses because they kept her awake, but Aiden tells you "She never sleeps". She killed the horses because her parents loved them, and she wanted to hurt them. She was always evil.

She was sleeping or trying to while she was alive. When Aiden says "she never sleeps" he's referring to how she is now, after her death.

No, she literally never slept before, as it's shows in mental clinic CCTV footage. It shows in her room she always awake and moving around. She didn't sleep yet killed the horses because they kept her 'awake'. It's subtle way to tell even if other characters in movie thought she's misunderstood child, there are something evil in her.

It is shown in CCTV footage, when Rachel quick fast forward it, samara didn't sleep in mental hospital in days. human can't accumulate to that. I don't think you know about the ring lore, I'll not spoil but when her actual mother pregnant she's lives 'somewhere' and in constant fear of drowning and sarama is kinda that fear entity's reincarnation. She's human but have supernatural abilities because of that.

It also gives good callback in the last rings 2017 movie, when it's told that her spirit getting frustrated that people kept dodging her 7 day curse now, showing the video before someone dies. Even if her video start as to spreading her story, she still likes to kill, and didn't like that she can't kill anyone by her own 'rule'.

I absolutely love the "I saw her FACE" jumpscare, because it instantly takes this vague spooky threat and makes it VERY real. And then all future scenes have that horrific threat just hanging over them. Great reaction! :)

I had always been SO proud of myself for never having seen that face my entire life even though I saw this in theaters and I just knew something was coming so I made sure to look down and I had never seen it. I felt the same way and years later I learned that mastermind Gore Verbinski used two tricks: the always sepia toned image adds dread and despair to the setting and he used very low toned frequencies in the sound effects. Both effects are working in your brain.

So, funny story. When this came out, I saw it in the theaters and we still had a cable box at home. I live in a place known for getting tons of lightning storms, and the next day I think I accidentally turned off the cable box but not the TV itself when I got up to use the computer. Whenever lightning hit, there was a flicker of static across the TV that I was seeing reflected in the computer monitor. Bear in mind this was a TV that I was sure was off up to that point. Yeah, I almost crapped myself until I realized what was happening.

Man this movie scared me badly, cause the night my sister rented it ( she was a manager at blockbuster at the time) we also saw the Japanese version this is based on, and was even more scary. I couldnt sleep well for 2 weeks, i hadn't been that scared since i was alittle kid!

The horse scene always cracks me up like, A. the animal is obviously distressed, and B. its not even her horse. She had no reason to be by it. Like any normal person would just stand there harassing a strangers animal on public transit until it literally kills itself

There's a third version besides the Japanese and American versions. There's a 1998 Korean version named 'The Ring Virus', best known for being the first film of the well known actress Doona Bae.

I saw this movie when I was in either 8th grade/freshman. I was watching it at night and seeing the dead girl in the closet at the beginning left me so internally disturbed that I turned the movie off and finished it the next day right after school during the sunny and bright daytime.

It's kind of funny how it was Disney movies that taught me about death as a toddler. The stabbings of Maleficent and the Beast were ones that stood out to me. And because of that, one day, when my mom was going to get a haircut, right when I noticed a pair of scissors, I screamed and sobbed because I thought they were going to hurt her with them. My aunt had to carry me outside to calm me down 😅 I was about three or four when that happened.

There is both a sequel (ringu 2) and a prequel (ringu 0:birthday) to the Japanese version which tells the origins of the tape. I remember all my friends being scared of this movie when it first came out but i was too traumatized by the horse scene to be scared 😢

This movie terrified me so badly when I was a kid, I couldn’t sleep for weeks. I remember going to the ice cream van and it was run by two brothers and we hadn’t seen one of them for a while so when I told the other brother that I was going to watch The Ring he told me that his brother watched it and went missing 🤣 so when I saw the movie and that she comes for you I was convinced she was coming for me 🤣

When this movie came out, I was at a friends house one day, and her brother came home with bootleg dvds of this movie and something else. So we threw this on, and at first it wasn't a terrible bootleg. But on day 3 when she goes to visit the nieces friend in the asylum, there was something off. After about a minute we realized whoever was filming zoomed in so both womens boobs were the focus, and their heads offscreen. So we turned it off. Long annoying wait for it to become rentable so we could finish it! 😂

The ring is the very first horror i saw when i was 11 years old, i couldnt sleep the 7 th night.. Rewatching it now, i think its a decent thriller, as you follow the story along what happened, trying to figure a cure out against the clock. I love it. Now i wont consider it horror anymore, probably, more like creepy thriller or something

This movie terrified me when it came out, to the point I took the TV out of my bedroom as a teen and is probably why I've never had a TV in my bedroom since. Also, the horse scene has and will always unnerve me. I've never done well with animal deaths in movies (to the point I will avoid a film is I know an animal dies) and the horse scene was so graphic, it disturbed me for years. To the point that your commentary on it made me nauseous because all I can think of is how scared that horse was and how painfully it was killed - and I know it's just a movie, but it still bothers me. This is one of my all time favorite horrors, right up there with The Grudge. Both movies were my gateway to J-Horror.

This is a great movie. The original is much grosser and creepier, though. 😂 The body in the closet freaked the hell out of me, too. I wasn't expecting to be that creeped out in the beginning of the movie. 🤣 I saw your Gonjiam: Asylum movie reaction, too. As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I damn near had PTSD flashbacks from last year. That's definitely one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. My brother recommended that I watch it at night with the lights off. One of the biggest mistakes I've ever made. 😱
