31 y/o went to catch a line drive in the outfield Wednesday that was knuckling. It took a dip at the end and I over extended down with it to catch it while running and my whole lower back went numb. Went to throw the ball back in but couldn’t stand upright due to pain, collapsed, no longer able to walk. Went to urgent care, got steroid shot and prescription for muscle relaxers. Been three days now, walking again but just by taking baby steps, if I move wrong my whole left side locks up and spasms for around 5 seconds then releases. Never have had back issues, only thing I can think of is just over use. Been getting back to the gym over past couple months, legs and glutes were sore before I hit the field, should of listened to my body better and skipped practice.

**This is NOT medical advice** **Always seek professional/medical advice** Just want to chronicle what happened to me yesterday (12/22/2020 at 8am). I was trying to find pertinent information yesterday, but I couldn't find any that matched my situation. Hopefully this will provide some needed info for another soul. 1) At approx. 8am, I was shadow boxing (as a form of exercise) when I over exerted and inadvertently twisted by back--translation, I blew my back. In an instant, I couldn't stand up. Good thing, the bathroom sink was there to help break my fall. 2) Situation: From 8am to approximately 5pm, I couldn't put any weight on my back. Even when I was sitting down, I had to support my weight with my arms (via armrest of my office chair). The lower back area was so ginger that the slightest movement would cause back spasms. 3) After an hour of being fixed in a pseudo-upgright position (sitting down while supported by my arms), I realized that I needed to start moving my body. I was afraid that it will be harder to recuperate with my body "locking" up in a frozen position for hours. 4) So from 8am to 5pm, I did the following very excruciating exercises: i) I learned how to push my office chair backwards to go to the bathroom -- my office chair acted as a defacto wheelchair at this point. My daughter also assisted by bringing me a cold pack from the freezer, hot salonpas (an icyhot patch) and a generic Target ibuprofen 200mg per pill (I took 2 pills). ii) I moved my chair towards a bunk bed that was in my home office. I was able to muster enough energy to lunge forward and grab one of the legs of the bunk bed with my left hand and with my right grab the frame of the top bunk bed. That one swoop movement enabled me to stand up (albeit all hunched up). This was extremely painful and caused by back to twitch with lower back spasms. iii) When I got tired with ii), I took a "break" and sat back down -- keep in my mind that my arms would also eventually get tired, cause my arms are supporting my weight while sitting down. iv) To change things up, I attempted to lie completely on the floor with either my face up or down--after 4-5 attempts, I realized that it was not possible. It was extremely too painful and the spasms were being triggered at my every adjustment--it was a nightmare situation just trying to get back from all fours, to my chair in an upright position. v) My true break came, when I figured out how to take a nap.... After 3 or 4 hours of doing steps i) to iv), I realized that I was getting too tried to sustain this kind of cadence. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found out that I could place a layer of pillows on my lap while seated and I could lean on those pillows with minimal pain.. I fell asleep for about 10 minutes. Which was enough for me to keep going. ***** ***** -- If you're not a Catholic Christian, please skip this section. This will just upset you --- So my brother, my mom and dad arrived around 5pm and my dad brought his blessed Holy Oil and prayed over my back. As my brother and parents where praying over my back, my dad was making a sign of the cross on my lower back with the Holy Oil. He asked in Jesus Name to relieve my back of any pain and to bring physical healing. After the prayer, my brother and mom left to buy me some aloe vera drink (they said that it had medicinal effects) . ***** ***** -- When my bro and mom left, my dad saw me attempting to do the exercise from 4) ii)... so he urged me to try to lift my legs as I was standing up (like I was marching in place). Even with the pain, I tried to follow my dad's suggestions (both my mom and dad have a hospital background). Thank God, I was finally able to stand without any support (with pain). But that motivated me to take tiny steps (with pain). Next thing you know, I am walking (with pain). After 10 minutes of just walking with pain, I was finally able to go down the stairs. -- I thank God for my healing. It's now just over 24hours since the incident. I was able to get "some" sleep. I took some Aleve PM last night. But what also helped is the fact that my wife and I have a pretty tall bed. So I did not have to hunch as much to slide into bed. I moved my body in "diagonal" positions so that my lower back wouldn't result in spasms. "parallel" is your body lying down and parallel to the bed. "diagonal" means your body making an "x" with the relation to the edge of the bed. By doing these movements, I was able to minimize spasms when I got in and out of bed. I really hope this provides some assistance to someone. At the very least... maybe it will inspire of things NOT to do. If you're reading this, you have probably sustained a recent acute back pain. Best wishes on your situation. Peace.

Yup, a pulled muscle in the lower back must be right up there as one of the worst pains going. I've been through it before and I'm now going through it again, although I'm not entirely sure what I did to cause it this time. I think it may have been a culmination of things and a buildup that caused the strain. Now in week two and it's still bothering me, though I'm slowly trying to stretch it out and moving about as much as I can. It takes time. Putting socks on is a real challenge 😬

@@Khaiisme Yeah, sorry, your reply came across as quite flippant after I spent a total of two months getting over my back issue. It certainly wasn't something you could "man up" over. As an ex-rugby player that suffered quite a few broken bones over the years a pulled lower back muscle is the worst pain I've ever experienced and it really does cripple you. I've had mild back muscle pain in the past which may give a mild spasm, but this was something entirely different and I only hope I never have to experience anything like it again.

@@DaveBowman Huh. Just pulled my lower back doing a squat now, and that's something I've done quite a few times before, but never is it agonizing in the way you describe. It's sore/tender, and makes it painful/uncomfortable to move for a week or so, but then it tends to go away (although my back never fully heals, unfortunately,) and it doesn't prevent me from moving. While I am annoyed at this continuous issue I have, reading your comment makes me grateful my issue isn't as excruciating as what you describe, at least so far - no offense. Since your comment was 11 months ago, I hope your problem is sorted out by now!

Lesson that I learned was to take your time to heal. I was recovering and got better after a week of rest and therapy. So went back to work like on the 9th day and bam, ended up re-aggravating my back injury. And now I’m back to square one where it hurts to stand sit and walk 🤦🏻‍♂️. Definitely am going to take off from work for a good 2-4 weeks.

I get a few twinges/stings almost everyday. But what really helps is doing the McKenzie press ups, Kegel exercises, taking Tumeric/iron supplements and pop a painkiller once in a while. It seems this is just living a different life style now where I have to manage this pain. I’ve definitely pulled something in my lower back. Its been 8 days & i can only walk now without severe pain tho is still sore. Ive been icing it and also heating it & adding in a few of the stretches etc but im not getting any better & feel after doing the stretches im back to square one 😢. I just bent forward when sitting down & felt a ping around my SI joint & its by far worst pain of my life. Need to get better as ive a holiday in 2 weeks 🤦🏻‍♂️

I once played soccer with a minor pulled back. I pulled it when I kicked the ball at warm up. I still played lol, I notice minor pain when I would sprint. It felt warm/heat all in my lower back but it was weird because didn't notice it 4 minutes in the game. I did put Palm of Tiger on my back right after I pulled it. That kinda helped lol. After game a good pain, I say around 5.5 . It really hurt when I coughed lol. Next day the pain went down to 3.5 still real careful when I got out of the car or bend down. Following 2 days pain at 2 lol. But I know right guys.. "what were you thinking playing like that!" Mamba Mentality😁 What can I say lol🤷🏽‍♂️

😭😭😭 I just put my lower back out, I was stretching out the neck of a thick jumper by standing on it and pulling with my arms. Next thing a massive ping and I blacked out (I think) managed out of instinct to stand while pain increased with movement accompanied my weakness in my left hip and feeling faint. I didn't know what the hell was going on but out of sheer panic I forced through the pain to walk and my hip is definitely weak 😭. The pain is so bad. This is a cry for help if anyone sees this pls pls tell me what else I can do!

A few days ago, I picked up some heavy bags and pulled a muscle. I couldn't stand up and walk comfortably. Today Im a lil better, and able to walk slowly. But my lower middle back still hurt somewhat, and I still need to be careful. I certainly have been stretching and taking cold showers to soothe my back area. 😊
