Today I take the Kubota MX 5400 to the woods with the Wallenstein FX85 Skidding Winch to pull 3 big red oak logs from the valley to the trail. Good news is I got them to the trail, bad news is they aren't as good as I thought.

Mike, You sir, ARE a Professional Weekend Warrior. You make some great observations and plan ahead. I like how you think things through, I would work for you no problem. A lot of trust in your directions and you have a lot of Common Sense. This is why your channel is so entertaining for me. It has been awhile since you have used the winch and this was a great example of how to safely extract logs from a potentially dangerous slope, safely by yourself. Stay safe and keep on, Keeping On Mike.

Phil here from NE Indiana. Mike, I really appreciate you stopping and taking time to explain to some of us what you're doing and why. Once you explain why then it's like ahhhh. I see. So thank you. And then, it's not like one of those west coast trees. I would use the BX to pick it up and haul it out. You crack me up. Great video, keep them coming.

A "Windfall". This term is from Colonial Days when the King of England owned any large trees for the use as Masts for His Naval Ships. Cutting a large tree down without the permission of His Majesty's Tax collector could land you in Jail or Debt. That is why when a large tree was blown down it was ok for the land owner to use it how he wished as long as the Tax collector determined it fell due to natural causes, so it was a "Windfall" and the word came to mean a lucky happenstance.

I was looking forward to a huge stack of red oak boards. Had to be the reason it fell. Mike the video was great, as always. Please thank Melissa for the range video. I've learned the hard way with a similar winch type it's nearly always better to use the choker chain around big logs. You don't have stones or stumps in ground as I usually have but it will spare the cable (and snatch blocks). Nice to see your forest work in slopes, Mike!

Thanks for the video, very interesting. If you don't need the wood for a few months, leaving them in the woods for 3 months at the side of the trail and they will lose lots of weight as they dry out from maybe 50% to 25 to 30%. Also, the drying will be very steady as it's out of direct sunshine. The downside is that the little beasties will continue eating it!

"Be kind", we like or West Coast featherwoods, like Redwood , and Cedar. Which are resistant to those East Coast bugs. We here on the Great Plains appreciate both are East Coast and West Coast friends. We have some Ash , Cedar , and Juniper here. Yet the Mills here still charge us an arm and a leg for the pine and blue spruce that is milled locally! Looks like the covid-19, really is a greedy infection.
