It's a great tape, but IMO I'm happy with what it turned into (iridescence). Tracks like I'LL BE THERE and KEEP ON SHINING are definitely some of my favourite tracks from them.

Even if Ameer's verse aged poorly, getting to hear the original version of Let's Get Married was a magical moment. As well, even if it wasn't "on PUPPY" hearing the leaked version of that one IG live track "Breakfast in Bed" made me so happy. It's a shame it never got a proper release, even without Ameer's verse, it would've made for an AMAZING track. I'd argue I love that track more than Let's Get Married. I'm just happy we got any form of PUPPY though, it's nice to hear what could've been, but I am overall happier with Iridescence sound and direction. J'OUVERT is still an INSANE moment in BH's discography I wouldn't wanna trade for any PUPPY track.

Tracks 2 through 8, as well as the closer track (not counting the two “bonuses” that leaked), all ended up releasing in some form. Some were on iridescence, some showed up on their THINGS WE LOST IN THE FIRE radio thing, some even showed up on ARIZONA BABY. Only three tracks here were never officially released by the band in some capacity, to my knowledge. Hell you can even dock that down to two, since Kevin played the entirety of READY FOR WAR on his instagram live when the Ameer stuff was going down. Even with the songs that ended up releasing though, there are still differences here, whether those be mixing differences, different vocal takes, extra verses from Ameer, or structural differences. But I honestly didn’t expect so much of the “official” PUPPY to have already been released in some form.

I think what we have to remember is that this was an album about 1-2 months out from release. Given that (at the time) BH had been working on albums for maybe a few months at a time before putting them out, I fully believe the album would have been a lot more fleshed out by release, if not fundamentally different. Also, since I've heard so many of the tracks already in so many disparate contexts, it is hard to judge the album on its own merit and not as like, a glorified collection of demos and maybe B-sides. I think if anything it shows that the band may have stagnated if iridescence never happened. PUPPY sounds honestly like "SATURATION 4" from what I'm hearing, and in retrospect I think the direction the boys took with iridescence was far more interesting, even if we never got the album we wanted during the PUPPY era.

I don't think it's surprising or unexpected that we've pretty much heard different variations on the Puppy album in other Brockhampton releases. I thought it was pretty apparent ever since the Things We Lost In The Fire radio stint, and the leaks of tracks like Let's Get Married, that they've been remixing and revisiting formulas of the same unreleased songs, sometimes multiple remixes for one single theme or melody.

I feel like if you try to imagine what finishing touches would've been made to the tracks it would have been for a better transition album than Iridescence was. I love some of the tracks we got on Iri, but most of those tracks are partially here on Puppy, and I think generally the collection of songs on Puppy I would have enjoyed more. Already listening to both and then shuffling my BH playlists, there are very seldom tracks from Iri that I actually want to listen to anymore. As much as its production was granted more experimental, I don't think it lands most of the time. I would have preferred half ginger/half saturation w/puppy as opposed to what Iri was.
