I noticed this behaviour on many cars. My BMW E90 does the same. When I brake hard it will downshift as if it expects me to accelerate promptly in a while. It will hold the gear longer instead of downshifting. Interesting differences between EU and US manufacturers

My Cadillac ATS also does this. If you drive aggressively in normal mode, it will switch to the same behavior as if you were to manually enable sport mode (holding gears, revving out higher, and stronger shifts), even though it doesn't tell you. Ease off and after a little bit it will return to normal behavior. Seems like many newer cars will do this automatically.

2009 Ford from Europe. There's a button at the bottom where the top if the accelerator pedal touches the floor. It activates a function called "kickdown", it downshifts to the gear that gives best performance, keeps revs at the top end. It's in many vehicles with auto transmission, people just might not be aware.

in general the Trans is always learning what you want from it. you can have 2 identical cars, same engine same trans, same trim behave completely different on the same Gas pedal input.

Ford was sneaky with this stuff. When I was a LEO I noticed this while going to a call. Very smart setup, puts a lot less strain on the trans staying in gear and not shifting up & down if you're in a chase. The crown vics had a "pursuit mode" as well, if you ran them hard for like 2-3 mins the engine fan would kick on high and sound like a jet to keep everything as cool as possible

Every modern automatic does this,my Odyssey does this. This is not how you engage the cars performance setting. How would it be smart to have to hit the brake and lose ground in order for it to engage? It works like a rolling launch if you do it right and it's a button not hitting the brake. I have a 2015 Sedan Interceptor Ecoboost. I love "Pursuit mode" even though Ford doesn't call it that.

The idea is that in a pursuit, you'll brake hard and quickly accelerate anyway. This effectively "locks" the car in a high gear to maintain high speeds.​it makes far more sense to be this way rather than forcing an officer to distact themselves with silly menus or button combinations.@bobbybandz9194

For 90% of driving, it's inactive, but when it senses extreme driving conditions, the computer activates PM and everything becomes tighter from the shifting to the suspension to the breaking. It's all intertwined. I've blown passed Porsches & BMW's and Corvettes like they were parked at 65mph on crazy sharp turns. My 2015 Interceptor Utility anchors itself to the ground when that all wheel drive hooks up. Oh man, and in the rain? WOW! I honestly can't believe it's a mid-sized SUV. It just rides like it's on rails.

@YankeeWoodcraft no it doesn't, our Fords don't have "Pursuit Mode" period if you're getting technical and most every automatic in like 40 years has had what yall are speaking of,just most aren't quick enough to notice or care about when or where a downshift happens. What your vehicle has is "Low Gear" and that's comparable to Chryslers "Pursuit Mode" and actually changes the logic in the ECU/TCM. Think of it as the Police version of "Sport" in an SHO/ST etc,and as such recognize it needs to be selected.

@YankeeWoodcraft I've Dragy tested my 2015 "PopoSHO" in "D" and "L" L snatches up around .2 seconds off most the avg(metric)s in my experience. There's a .6 gap between the PBs in both modes at the 1/4 and a hair more at the 1/8th...I've tested all this and read my manual first lol.

Driving aggressively will also activate pursuit mode if you're not at highway speeds (ie making harsh turns, braking real hard as shown, hard acceleration or a hard U turn). The transmission hold the gear you're in during those so you can accelerate off the line after those maneuvers. This is based on me driving my Interceptor Utility aggressively during it's test drive before I bought it.

The standard civilian Taurus has this also and so does the explorer. All you do is pull the shifter down to L and it does the same thing. I can even shift the transmission manually via the up/down button on the side of the shifter.

some gearboxes its harder to activate. when i had a auto i always modulated the gas pedal to control what gear im in or i would use 1/2/d3, but sometimes in d it would stay in 2nd or 3rd. but im in a stick now so i dont remember

Uhhhmmmmm my friggin 06 Mitsubishi did this too, it's called adaptive transmission logic. The behavior of the transmission (shift point/gear hold) changes based on other parameters like hard cornering or hard acceleration, and the transmission will stay in the more aggressive mapping for a period of time even after returning to normal driving behavior as it is prepared in case the driver will continue encountering the same conditions.

My 02 Explorer does this. If I accelerate rapidly and then let off at like 50 kmh it just stays in 2nd or 3rd for a few seconds and then up shifts. It's not a police package, but that model was marketed to police, it even has the same engine as the Crown Vic.

i think its called engine brake most cars and suvs have it its supposed too do that for defencive driving in emergncy situations it downs shifts the transmission too keep the oil pressure up incase of quick acceleration out of a rut and the RPM high too have high vacuum for the powered brake assist too keep efficient braking power untill you go back to normal driving it also happens at speeds above 40mph if you turn the wheel hard like a fast lane change the transmission drops gear and the steering wheel tightens up to maintain control of the vehicle.... I drove my sisters 17 Rogue it has a setting for engine braking and dynamic steering ...

Currently driving the ecoboost varient sedan, and I must say this about the pursuit mode (with steeda suspension, complete engine tear down and upgrades all around/custom fab'd fun ) should be called "raped-ape" mode. Or "I know i'm having fun now" mode. This mode is also acompanied by a scream from tires if your doing it right. Makes U or a J turn much quicker, evoc never shows you what the car can really do Activates on. Hard braking. Hard acceleration more than one time in a row. (trained my toe how to tap in correct sequence) ...and my favorite. Spirited mountain driving also activates it

you dont need to brake, it uses the BCM to read chassis telemetry... just get on it and after a second it will automatically do it.

Thats an autamatic drive mode change. My 2016 VW Passat hat a button for that. My Merc E350d has one as well. But it changes the suspension and streering stiffness as well. Whenn u set it in sports mode. Even my wifes Peugeot E-2008 has this button.

The Aisin 6 speed in my 08 fusion seems to do the same thing the torque converter do go into slip mode when you drive hard, how the hell you activate it idk but flooring it seems to put it into a temporary sport mode otherwise it’s alway in eco mode.

And all of the sudden, my transmission went down to a lower gear and took it a good second to go back up. So I thought my transmission was f'ed, but I looked it up and it's just pursuit mode LOL

I have a gmc envoy that does exactly this and I’m starting to think it was a former police car. A couple other things points to that, it just seems like a weird ass cop car, it’s an Envoy SLT with leather and shit. But it has the cuts in the bumper and mounts for a push bar 🤷

Sorry buddy but that is incorrect. I thought that too at first. The L gear while it does force the transmission to stay in the bottom gears, and only shifts when its rev/peg'd. Pursuit mode changes the values for steering/throttle responce/abs module. Using the RDS module it even knows if your going uphill downhill, rev-matches in hard turns. Whereas L is just transmission parameters. It will keep as low a gear as possible and thats about it. (checked with ford fleet when I got it) (I wanted a persuit button which is the sport mode on civi models) It's just the differences like sport mode on a regular explorer or sedan. Pursuit is sport. While 1st gear on a civi is L on a police model. 1st gear will stay low but when pegged will force a shift before grenading the trans.

@@prosperbeats9955 wish there was an easy way to activate from a stand still. Checked all the wiring and couldnt find it mentioned. Thought maybe a ground I can short momentarily to activate. Only way would be to drive aggressively before you stop. Then it will be in pursuit mode momentarily. Then launch again. If your looking for off the line bump in acceleration use a pedal enhancer like a commander.

My minivan has "Pursuit mode" then....any auto will do this. I'll have to do a proper video in my 15 Ecoboost. It indicates the change on the dash. It isn't called "Pursuit mode" either but it's the gearing you want to pursue someone.

Yeah, every auto trans will kick down like that, but I think the key part is that it won’t shift back into a higher gear once you let off the throttle. So if you’re a cop chasing someone and go around a corner, the trans doesn’t upshift and then downshift when you mat it after the corner. Less wear and tear on the shifting mechanisms and the whole trans I’d imagine.

My '15 Police Interceptor Utility kicks into Pursuit Mode when I'm cruisin' in 2nd or 3rd, then lean hard into the pedal. It launches me forward, but I could feel the back begin to squat and it hooks up. And I giggle my butt off when everyone around me's brake lights come on! 😂

I own one and you do NOT have to slam the brakes on. If you hit the gas and hold it wide open at any speed it downshifts and maxes the tach at every shift because ECU goes into Pursuit mode when it recognizes you being aggressive on the throttle. Cops having to slam the brake on to chase someone would be idiotic.

That's not pursuit mode, it's just the car shifting to a lower gear for more power because you asked it for maximum acceleration by flooring it. Nearly every automatic gearbox will do it, it's called a kickdown and has nothing to do with applying the brakes first.

if you have a 3.5 ecoboost I would just replace it with a 3.5 ecoboost it's a much better engine than the 3.7 if you get one from factory it will be the updated version if you search junk yards look for one out of a 2015 or newer.

@MorphnSeaGull Try it out in another auto; if you brake hard enough to get a downshift, and then immediately get into it, it'll be in its power...that's how it's supposed to be? The TCM has different shift modes in most modern cars for economy and power. If you're just babying it it'll shift diffent then when you're in it. You're just braking hard enough to get a downshift and then getting into it. Slushbox is just slushboxing after that. The police variant 6F50 and 6F55 transmissions do have an aggressive shift mode,but this isn't it.
