Tank and Track Mechanic here (63A). Track normally has freely rotating roadwheels (the ones that hold it to the road), same thing with it's guide wheels. The track itself is normally driven by one sprocket at the back or front, on each side. The sprockets' (usually in pairs of 2 on each side) maniples (teeth) bite into gaps between the track's links on each part of the outside. This provides a ton of torque transfer, instead of slipping along the inside of the track with a drive wheel. I doubt it's possible in Instruments of Destruction, but it sure would help how well it climbs! You could have the larger wheels drive it, as they keep pressure with the ground, and let the guide-wheels rotate freely. On an M1A1(A2/A3) Abrahms, you have a series of narrow teeth, that slip between pairs of narrower guide wheels. This helps the track stay centered at every point it makes contact with the roadwheels. The same is true of the M88 Recovery Vehicle (think like a tow-tank, for tanks), and the M113A3 APC. This track design's merits are pretty clear, otherwise they wouldn't use it for so many vehicles. Each of the Road Wheels have suspension in the form of Torsion Bars (Springsteel rods designed to twist) that allow the track to deform to terrain. Tension is maintained by the piston having a torsion bar itself. So, you could have suspension, more in the style of a Sherman, on each of your roadwheels, but remember to have a pretty rigid suspension on your Track Tension Arm. If your Tension Arm flexes, or twists (left or right) then you'll lose a lot of tension, and likely, "Throw Track," which means your track falls off. Which when you have to put the track back on, is a drawn out process. Track ain't light by any stretch of the imagination, it's made of some hefty steel. Hope this is helpful and entertaining.

Dude this is awesome! Also your pun game is in overdrive for this video. Hahaha great job Scrapman. Another huge win for you (and for your viewers as well!) Cheers buddy! Edit: I would think this would work easier if you made bulldozer tracks instead of tank tracks (main difference being a higher third driving wheel about 6 blocks higher around the rear 1/3 of the track base as to lessen the friction and give more room for sturdier track design) Edit #2: missed a "Delayed Annihilation" opportunity when you were clearing the small building to get to the small wall.

They always put the big wheels at the corners where most bending happens. You did the opposite, so you had issues, plus you forgot a crucial thing - tank suspension. Theyre pretty cool too
@HammerFox2 жыл бұрын
As a self-proclaimed, internet certified tank expert... That is indeed a tank. But I digress. The front and back 'rollers' could also be giant powered wheels since Idlers and sprockets on tanks are usually the same size as the road wheels. That might solve the issue of the track trying to imitate a stance car. Also maybe a bar between the tensioning wheels to stop them from flexing down?

What I find funny: You have a tensioning system, meaning you can build the tracks slightly larger so you can properly connect it with blocks, yet you use the beams to build as is. There are also other alterations you can do to to optimize the build.
@Pystro2 жыл бұрын
In order to be able to connect the top and the bottom you have to be very meticulous with the angles you use. One way would be to use the exact same angles bowing out when you build from the top flat part to the middle as the angles you then use to come back from the middle to the bottom flat part (i.e. build the top and bottom part of the turn around symmetrically). If you want the track turn around to be asymmetrical (for example to get the shape that Scrapman was going for) you can additionally throw in segments at 60°. But that's pretty much it. So either you have to constrain your shape to those requirements, or you have to build the tracks at those 60° angles and then deform them into the shape you want with the tensioners (which risks them falling off while you spawn in).
@0bsidianPrime2 жыл бұрын
@@Pystro I understand the meticulousness, but I don't think it's as big an issue as you think it is. Especially with what can be found in the workshop.
@Pystro2 жыл бұрын
@@0bsidianPrime My point was that you have to know how to achieve it. If you just try random things it almost certainly won't line up. And to know how to make it line up you have to know your trigonometry (or at least your geometry).
@0bsidianPrime2 жыл бұрын
@@Pystro I wasn't aware that high level of math was involved. Like, I often mess around in a Lego program called Digital Designer, and putting on tracks or chain for a chainsaw on the wheels is a similar experiance, but literally all I do, get the general position, then begin making minor adjustments until I get what I'm going for. Length does have a part to play, but in Iod it's not really a thing to worry about compared to Digital Designer because of the tensioners.
@patrickhector2 жыл бұрын
the top wheels are supposed to be idlers, aren't they? You can't guarantee that they'll rotate at a speed proportionally faster to the bottom ones anyway, since they'll have to spin twice as fast if they have half the circumference and there's such little load on them anyway that they'll probably spin faster regardless.
