Very nice comparison and testing. One thing to consider when thinking about using such a chain is that it is very unlikely the link a thief is trying to cut or grind will be held as solid as it is in your vise. It will likely be loose, which adds to the cut resistance somewhat.

@74KU 8 жыл бұрын
I would like to see chain manufactures put some kind of sleeve on these chains that is not just protective of the bike but works somewhat like chainsaw chaps in that they are both cut resistant and will foul up any power tools used on it.

I would like a law that theves will be stripped bare and horse whipped in the town square. Public flogging would put an end to this nonsense. The whips can be made of Kevlar and leather for a stiffer snap as it cuts through the flesh! You would once agein be able to leave you doors unlocked, like when I was a kid and people feared God ,the police where respected and jails where full of actual criminals.

Could you do some 1/4in chain tests. As a biker hauling around 1/2in chain is a bit much. I currently use 3/8th cable but I know it would be very easy for someone to come through with a pair of side cutters and take it off in no time.

Why does PEWEG not make an insertable-end chain end link just like ABUS; with different lengths. Say, 6ft, 8ft, and 10ft ? I would certainly invest on such a chains, if there were available.

What size is this chain? What size is the bolt cutters? Abus sells all sorts of security chain versions. 10KS model with 3/8" thickness? 12KS with 1/2" thickness? 14KS with 9/16" thickness? I have the Abus 10KS 2 foot chain with ABUS 20/70 Diskus and also the Kryptonite NY cinch chain lock (12mm six-sided chain made of triple heat-treated boron manganese steel). If it takes 5 minutes to make 1 cut with the bolt cutter, it will probably take another 5 minutes to make another cut on that same link for 10 minutes total. It looks like it needs 2 cuts to fully break the chain. Add more minutes if the chain is off the ground like 1.5 foot off the ground (bike frame and wheel) and even lot more minutes if it is the bike top tube (3 feet off the ground). Majority of thieves use small or medium size bolt cutters. Keep the chain higher helps avoid some leverage but you won't be able to lock up the rear wheel.

My guess is it was 10ks in this video, Bennett’s an insurance company in the uk tested a 12ks square and hexagonal but it barely put a dent in it, they also tested a 10ks that lasted more than 4 minutes with 42’ croppers.

I got the 14KS chain that is larger than that one from Abus, I ground down the edges of the last link down on the sides, until it would slip through the other end loop, then I stuck a Abus 37/80 lock on it, and I feel it is very secure

You need to state whether that ABUS chain is a 12KS or a 14KS. There is a huge difference. The 12KS can be bolt cropped with difficulty. I've never seen anyone get through a 14KS with bolt cutters. By the way, the super-hard chain that you show (that didn't make a mark) has its own flaw. If the chain is that hard, it won't get defeated with a bolt cutter. The proper tool is a sledge hammer because it should shatter from its brittle nature. The ideal chain is differentially heat treated to be soft on middle of the link and to be very hard on the outside of the link. This repels the bolt cutter while remaining resistant to shattering with a sledge hammer. All chains are defeated with an angle grinder. With the tools available today, I don't know why anyone would even attempt to cut a hardened chain with anything but an angle grinder.

PL362 due to its shackle size (15mm) would need a MINIMUM of a 16mm almax type in order to work. It has a shroud, so possibly the 19mm. But the 14KS has an advantage in that looping it as Wayne showed, it can act as a second shroud for the exposed bits of shackle.
