I owned an original Twin Cam back in the day, aged 18 (yes really!). Ermine white on genuine Minilites. I fitted Lumenition ignition, DS11 pads and VG95 linings (must get out more!). Aged 67 and three quarters now - my God I wish I still owned it, would be worth a tad more than the £550 I believe I paid for it in 1973! It was slightly tuned, so maybe 115 bhp on the standard twin 40s. Power figures in the 180s and beyond were full race/Ford Works Escort fantasy spec. (for me) back then, just to give some perspective. Watching the channel stirs up many good memories!

Marcus good video. In my experience when I was doing what you are I got the most gains by changing the cams and exhaust you also need to watch the spend it is easy to get carried away. I would suggest your next upgrade for the engine would be to change the cams. Always remember keep her safe too when tuning. Great to see her def my favourite car of yours mate.

@@davebartram1732 lets not forget , NA tuning is a bit of an art and its a combination of many little mods that work well together that produce gains , opening up the head is only part of the solution. wacking a big turbo on it is guaranteed instant gains but this is where NA tuning is dark magic.

More to the point, there was a gain in torque all through the rpm range. Folks forget that when one changes up the rpm drops way back down, and giving away a little at the change point for more at the changed-to point can be quicker overall - here it's win-win, but it's easy to badly screw up the power at the low rpm point when chasing the top end.

Great video Marcus. While a 180+ bhp is very good it should have broke the 200+ bhp mark with ease. Did you have the inlet manifold matched to the new head and is the VVT solenoid working correctly. Dan Hagan has a close setup to yours and was pushing 210hp. Cams would see 215-220 bhp but im sure you will figure it out and Rome wasnt built in a day. You have seen improvements in torque and sometimes headline bhp figures dont always show how good a car drives. Regardless my head is going to AL Developments for them to work their magic but I have some nice cams that still retain VVT. Glad to see the car back on the road 👍

Totally agree with everything your saying regarding 200+ or there about give or take with similar mods, I’d be checking VVT solenoid . Are they stock injectors ? A.L Developments heads and work is the best in the game and mine will be also going to him

For the road I wouldn’t use wild cams, sure you get more peak power but it drives like a POS until it’s on cam. Fine if you only do circuit work but not needed on a road car. It’s the area under the curve & where it makes the torque. I’ve been there and ruined many road cars.

Great video. Much better to look at Torque which is what makes you accelerate. Remember Power = Torque x Speed so the power will keep going up as the recs rise until the Torque curve flattens. As you did, focus on the mid range as well as the top end. I'd want to keep the VVT if you swap the cams. Look forward to the next one.

30 odd years ago my mate had a m2 harrier with 2.1 pinto making 140 bhp and I remember that being rapid so I’m sure 180 is more than impressive plus your is obviously lighter 👊 will you ever make it crazy power like 300 bhp upwards

ST170 ports as standard appear a lot bigger than a blacktop, only way to see a big jump in power from a single change is if its the item that restricting the engine and then allowing all the rest of the elements from air filter, carbs, ports, cams (Compression ratio) manifold through to exhaust to flow better. Still good fun power level on the road👍

A friend of mine who was involved with building westfields with the zetec engines explained to me gains can be had by just adjusting the cam timing with standard cams on.rolling Road obviously not as much as changing them though

Yes the Zetecs dont have a keyway on the cam pulleys so you can adjust the cam timing without even fitting the adjustable pulley. On an ST170 you can adjust the exhaust cam this way (and we did but I have the adjustable pulley) 👍

Cheers,mines standard top end with high compression pistons,rods,arp bearings etc,got mine set to -8 at the moment but it’s going on the rolling road in a couple of weeks for the first time

That graph looks rather lumpy, especially the torque curve. Is the ecu is slow to respond to fuelling demand or something? What if you made a cold air intake and enclosed the trumpets?

Not sure mate. Holding the bonnet open on a run always seems to help so a cold air intake would probably improve performance. . . . . would be a shame to hide the trumpets tho! 😃

Road Cars are much nicer with a Wedge of Torque rather than Head line figures which would only be Appreciated on a Track! Perhaps, Marcus it might be worth having a chat with AL about Cam choice which would give you more power and a Better Mid Range Torque!! Saying that , I'm guessing Esther is 900kg car, that kind of Power would be just right for skids😊

Ayy up I had a full utter nutter cam on my Escort RS2000 in the 90’s and it would not run right it was only happy when screwing the nuts off the car.no good it traffic as lumpy as hell.Always cutting out

Just to point out to everyone. Marcus has not had the cam lash checked out. As the cams in the ported head are the ones out of his old head. With this out the power will big be correct.

Ester is a road car, race cams are a huge mistake for road use, 188 was factory rally power back in the day, nothing wrong with that in a car that's that light.

Well I’m so disappointed been waiting since you got your head done to see gains and I was going to get my head done by A.L but with such small gains it’s just not viable without cams, I deffo thought this would have pushed the 200Hp, iv just had 187 standard 170 motor , good exhaust and A.T power ITB and that’s with no cam adjuster yet Mine was set up couple of weeks ago Hrmmm now I’m stumped

Taking roller power and corrolating that to the actual engine output is a fool's game. Bigest issues are the actual accuracy of the rollers, the vehicle's operating conditions (engine and oil temp', coolant temp', tyre pressure and desgn, etc) and/or the correction factors used. However, they are very useful when the same conditions are used for back to back direct comparisons.

@@davebartram1732 Yes, modern vehicles are already close to optimum for their OEM configurations, it's not like the old days where substantial differences can be gained. However, I would remind you that the PEAK power is only a small part of what you should be looking at, and it's the "area under the curve", or average power gains that tell a bigger story. In this case, power/torque showed gains about everywhere on the graph, which should be immediately noticeable in driveability and throttle response, where you normally drive. The two points where the "curve" really come into play is the power at the change up point, and the power at the point changed to. When chasing power peaks the engine tends to be "peakier", with a sharper drop off before and after the peak which results in a narrower effective rpm range. This can mean that there is less power at the shift point, and often an even bigger loss at the shifted to point - this means that while you have that momentary advantage over the other engines at close to peak, when that's past you're losing to them and when you change gear you're losing even more. I can actually give an example of this from back in the day - a friend decided he was going to build a "race" engine for his club level car (we did some rallies, hill-climbs, sprints, etc), but he was using a stock ratio gearbox, as CR options were then very expensive and hard to get hold of. The engine DID make a lot of power, but it was over a narrow rpm range, while you may get the problems with keeping it on, or close to, "the cam'", there was one peculiarity you may not have thought of - there was still a relatively wide split between 3rd and top, and even when rev'ing the heck out of 3rd gear the engine wasn't able to produce enough power at it's 4th gear rpm to overcome the aero' and frictional drag at that speed, and it would actually slow down. However, if it was on a downhil when the change was made, there was enough assistance from gravity for the engine to get up on 'the cam' and it would hold that easily on the flat and be a very fast vehicle (for the time) UNTIL he had to slow down to below the point where the engine had enough power and it would then just slow down. An extreme example, perhaps, but might illustrate why being focused on "peak power"can be a mistake. Forgot, depending on the engine characteristics - power/torque curve, peak rpm - red line, and gear ratios in the top gears, sometimes shifting a little short of the red line in the highest gears may be the quickest option. You can plot the torque/power curves at the wheels, in the gears, by multiplying by the gear ratio for the "y" axis, and dividing the rpm by the ratio on the "x" axis, on the same chart. If there's a cross-over of the curves, that's the optimum change point, if they don't cross, just use the maximum rpm in the lower gear before the change.
