4:00 (first off i love your videos, i just happen to be a huge nerd and fan of tanukis) but the English translation of tanuki is racoon-dog which people living in the US probably just assume racoon because we dont have tanukis here. there are also more than just the appearance that implys hes a tanuki, the fact his icon is a leaf is another hint, in myth tanukis use leafs in transformation such as transforming themselves and the leaf itself into items (most commonly money!) there is also the aspect of his tail, big eyes, and round belly being 3 of the 8 virtues of the tanuki

it's just localization weirdness. tanukis are almost universally localized to raccoons, just because, y'know, they're only native to japan. this sometimes has pretty funny results, like bringing the term "raccoon pouch" into existence.

tom nook is a tanuki/tanooki not a raccoon they americanized it since tanukis are japanese not american also tanukis have a different/fade on the end of there tails sometimes with a stripe were as raccoons have multiple stripes on there tails one more thing tanukis are brownish/reddish/grayish colour and racoons are just gray and black and some other shades
