The stairs technique is literally the most make or break thing to learn in Puyo Puyo. Its the difference between (using Mean Bean Machine as a reference) getting to level 6 and beating robotnik from levels 7 through 12. Stairs is how you'll beat the CPU on higher difficulties.

In first example, I reckon purples would have made a transition really nicely and purple/green and yellow/green could be used either to start second floor while you wait for more purples or placed in columns 5/6 to start a simple stair tail.
