Hi hi hi quick clarification: I don’t think I did the shooter games nearly enough justice in this video, they’re actually very complex and I wrote the script of this video while thinking strictly on what PVZ1 does. So, with that being said… I think the shooter games deserve their own video in the future. I’ll keep a mental note on that, since there’s just way too much nuance to them 😭

In pvz2's case, most specials, aka the most dangerous zombies have very obvious sound cues when doing their abilities like wizards "huuuaa *tung*", Jesters whirlwind like sound, octopuses squelchy landing noise, fishermans reeling in and throwing out the hook etc etc (sorry for those butchered ways of describing those noises btw)

I think the big thing with PvZ 2 is that rather than using audio to CUE the player into information, the focus was more about providing feedback to the actions on screen. Most special zombies have sound emphasizing the damage they're doing rather than what they're ABOUT to do. It is a shame that there's not as many cues for indicating information, they did an excellent job making you feel good for winning or poor for losing with how well they designed the sounds for zombie deaths and zombie abilities. Stand out examples have always been how satisfying it is to electrocute an army of chickens, or blowing up a large group of mechs in far future and hearing them shut down all at once.
@shibainu25283 ай бұрын
I remember seeing this one KZbinr who literally beat the entire game (Specifically the console version for more accurate seed planting) blindfolded. They had to get creative with their sound cues, for example, if they place a peashooter and hear nothing, there is nothing in that lane. If they place a sunflower on the far right and something gets eaten quickly, there is a zombie in that lane, and so on. At one point, they even depended on the music in Walnut Bowling to time their full sweeps (Spray and pray basically). That's how powerful sound cues are in this game, besides from the obvious sounds like a Zomboni starting up, music box winding, or a balloon inflating.

I think one thing you missed in the Garden Warfare games that I have seen no other shooter do, is have specific music types for each faction. If you're capturing a plant base, you usually hear upbeat music with whistling. If you're capturing a zombie base, its more filled with lower notes and the zombies singing. Even in Garden Ops the zombies and plants have unique music, as well as the gnomes who primarily have rock music.

As a gamer, two thoughts can cross my mind when Pop Goes The Weasel Plays: One of sensing the danger of what is basically a walking bomb. "COME ON, JUST LET ME PLANT SQUASH." And the other is the literal death whistle of an eldritch puppet. "....I'm dead."

I feel like there's some real potential for a sound design video just for the Garden Warfare games, because they do so many great things with the sound design to provide information. Its stuff thats so small you barely aknowledge it when its there. Small things like hearing zombies groan and slobber when they walk (engineer especially) so that you can hear them around a corner before you get ambushed. The UI also has great touches too, like how in Garden Ops, the damage your garden takes plays a little chirp sound to go with the hurt animation at the top. I think the biggest thing though is how almost every unique varient has their own shooting sound. It's subtle, but youll ALWAYS be able to recognize when a marine biologist, artic trooper, painter, or stuffy flower is firing. Also characters like citron having a sound JUST for rolling, super brainz always making audible grunts with his punches to make up for the lack of gun shots. Honestly, I could go on and on. The GW series unironically has the best sound design you will find in a team based shooter, SO much is communicated with so little, WITHOUT breaking atmosphere. It all builds on the vibe while still having so many intricate details like background ambience, footstep sounds, and tons of music to go with the modes without ever compromising information. Genuine master class!

You said that pvz 2 is worse in sound design simply because you're more biased towards pvz 1. Pvz 2 has many obvious sound effects. In ancient egypt, the biggest threats (Sarcophagus and tomb raiser) all have distinct sound effects. Technically explorer also has a distinct burning sound effect. Same can be said about the other worlds. Weasel Hoarder and dodo rider have obvious sound effects. Pretty much all mechs in far future have a distinct walking sound. Bug zombies, balloon zombies, bug bot imps, also have distinct audio cues. All dinos, especially Ankylosaurus, have distinct voice lines. Big-wave beach is especially good in this department. Surfer zombie's voicelines, octo zombies octopi throwing sound and fishermen's sounds are all distinct. Same goes for dark ages with king, jesters and wizards. In fact, the biggest threat in Pvz 1, gargantuar doesn't have an audio cue that plays immediately. But in Pvz 2, you can always recognise his presence because of his distinct footsteps. The things which are scary but don't have specific audio cues are the ones that are obvious to see or are generally spammed like Zcorp consultant, all star, etc.

They just made the game more tasteful, colorful, and not boring. I really hate hearing the same OST over and over again in every gameplay........ I wish they put an option to redownload all of the OST so the people with limited Memory Storage can choose to not download it and the people who want the OST experience can freely download it.
