On the section about the different forms of activism, guys you are all in the same team. Both sides have good points. Both sides have a common goal. Both sides have different approach towards it. Both sides are very crucial to the movement. I dont think one is OVERALL better than the other. These individuals all play a role, a cog to the machine that fights oppression, inequality and lies. About the whole refugee thing, I'm not even a westerner here but I have to say that you need to draw a really hard line even if it mean sacrificing others, because in the end it's similar with this gist : if you try to please everyone you would end up pleasing no one. Is it harsh, unfair, inhuman? Well who's going to celebrate such things if your establishment that put values on such things would end up getting disposed and replaced by establishment that desecrate those values? And actually similar way of thinking should get cemented when you're going against both of the so called extreme right and left ideologies on your society.

Excuse my ignorance, I have never looked into Islam or Muslims, but I don’t get the difference between the two? I always thought that a Muslim was the person, Islam is the religion (The same as Christian and Christianity) What I think I’m more confused about is how a person who is a Muslim (and therefore should believe in the Quran, would never think to learn (or hasn’t just naturally learnt throughout there life) the Quran or what Islam is?

Hey, Muslim here. When you live in a muslim-majority country, the religion kind of becomes cultural. What Armin said, "muslim by name" is very accurate. It's like, you're raised to believe what everyone else believes, and whatever the religious authority says (a sheikh, cleric, the guy at the mosque) is what you believe. You don't have to read the Qu'ran, or contemplate it, or study Islamic history, in order to be Muslim. If your family is Muslim then so are you, then you just do all the rituals that everyone else does, believe everything that they believe, and are satisfied with that. Most Muslims assume that what other Muslims tell them about the nature of Islam is true, especially if they're a sheikh of some sort, and they get taught basic things at school like prayer, pilgrimage, sin, some Quranic verses. I think people don't really care enough to study religion in depth, which is fine, they don't have to. Really, Islamic rituals and ideas become indistinguishable from culture. It's exactly like cultural Christianity. You're raised to believe Jesus died for your sins, you go to church on Sundays, maybe read a few Bible versus, but you don't really study it deeply.

@@PureeCharm Thankyou! Perfect answer. I guess I didnt think like that because in Australia, if you don't go to a religious school, you probably arnt religious, and then don't know about it. But if you are, say, Christian, you'll go to a Christian school, and therefore have Bible studies as a subject through school. Atleast was the case for me. Thankyou for the explanation!

It should be not treated any different from non-religious or secular ideology. If you have no problem with anti-nazi policy then why would have problem with anti-islamic policy ? Because muslims claim it is divine and from god ?? If I create new religion that has exact same belief as nazism but claim it is from god then does mean we should tolerate it ?? Also, it worth mention that giving people the freedom is not same as immigration. for example you can allow your existing citizen to believe whatever they want but does not mean you have to bring any kind of people from outside to your country. Example, people are free to be Nazi (as long it is noting more that an opinion, not actual practice) but at same time you can have policy to prevent foreigner nazi from immigrating and getting citizenship. Freedom has noting to do with immigration. You can totally stop immigration and still have full freedom for your existing citizen that live in your land (sorry for my bad English, not my main language)

I loved loved the Q&A. Immigration Immigration Immigration, yeah Quran 4:100-103... you BETTER base your immigration policies, non on religious believes, but on common, similar values. Otherwise, other values may end ruling your neighbourhood, your city, your country... I heard some hypocrite answers. And yeah, try to educate Muslim, while they are in their own countries, do not bring Islamics inn, they hope that they will change. I hope there is not too late for some of the countries in west Europe. e.g. Sweden. Then invited inn, refugees from the military dictatorship in Chile in the 70ties and 80ties. Those refugees were mostly, educated, and humanist socialists, most of them. Most of them stayed, became citizens, and you probably did not heard much about the chilean community in Sweden, as they are so well integrated. Then, came the Muslims... Armin, Jummy, Imtiaz are so right. Vaccines cause Autism... well, maybe they do, but when we heard the rest of conspiracies and just wrong things those people say? yeah, I don'y blind believe in medicine and doctors, but I do believe in their inductive system, and in their commitment to accept the fact that they may be wrong. Vaccines in general, must be mandatory in public places, indeed, and most of people into conspiracies and against vaccines, are selfish people. Reform Islam... I believed that it can be reformed, but the mental gymnastic is too complicated, because even if they reject all the Hadiths, put into the Quran a context of specific place and time, which is not there... they still will need to follow Muhammad... and there is no other texts about Muhammad, telling that he was different from the Muhammad with we know.... so yeah, most of reformations, reformed out of Islam (Druzes, Baha'i...)

I disagree with Armin. Islam is a foreign policy strategy of oil rich middle eastern countries. We should restrict Muslims coming into our countries because we aren't going to win their hearts and minds if their enclaves and religious congregations get larger. It's utopian and idealistic to think that we can just talk to Muslims as people and get them to change their minds. They will not assimilate. They will lie to you just to make you like them. I've had enough working and friendships with Muslims to see this. They are very, very hard headed about Islam. Armin isn't going to talk them out of Islam overnight and it's a ton of work trying to do so. Just don't let them in. Being allowed into a country is a privilege, not a right. If you are not yet a citizen of a country, you cannot then claim the rights of that country before even being allowed in, so I also disagree that using religion as a filter for allowing immigrants in would somehow affect our freedom of religion as citizens of the country.

Atheism is an impotent (lack of) belief. It has no active value and is practically vacuous. You cannot (at the least) subjectively fill the meaning of your life with a lack of something. Thus, it necessarily leads to some other metaphysical belief system filling that vacuum. It always makes me smirk - externally or internally - when atheists claim they have no “religion”. Everyone does, because at the most fundamental level, a religion is how you choose to live your life based on an underlying metaphysical belief system, whether the said religion is classified as organized or not. This notion is encapsulated in the Islamic idea of “din” and it is unsurprising to me that many ex-Muslims do not see this. “Have you seen the one who takes as his din his own whims? How can you then be a keeper over him?”

Many atheists though, including myself and the people on this panel, readily admit that atheism isn't a belief system, it simply answers the question, do you believe in god(s), with the answer being no. To your other point about religion though, it really all depends on how you define the word. Under the definition, the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods, we can't be categorized as following a religion. Under the definition, a particular system of faith and worship, that still doesn't fit the different types of belief systems atheists can fall into (I will concede there are irrational atheists out there so some could fall into this category). Under the definition, a pursuit or interest to which someone ascribes supreme importance, then yes, you could say an atheist is religious. I would argue though that the last definition of religion is so broad that it's meaningless. But hey, if calling us religious makes you sleep better at night, whatever floats your boat.

Caleb Smith no one implicitly or explicitly called you or anyone else “religious”. They said everyone has a “religion” according to the definition given in the comment. The Quran - the Holy Book of the Muslims and at one point the ex-Muslims who are on the panel in this video - never uses the word “religion” in the limited sense of the term where people have to believe in what is classified as a supernatural power. It uses the term transliterated as “din”, which is loosely and generically translated as a “way of life”, and applies it to anyone, whether they consider themselves Christians, Jews, atheists, or those who take their own whims as their “god”. No one is saying you follow a religion or are religious to make them feel better. They are emphasizing the point that one cannot separate a person’s way of life from their underlying belief system whether they consider themselves an adherent of a religion or not.
