Hello all, this is Mom. Thank you for watching the video and getting some insight into our family. Some of you were concerned by Dad's obliviousness to our racial dynamic. He really isn't. He knows there is more to me and the girls than just being his. Though being his is his main concern. He does not care what others think but as any husband and father, would give his life for ours. The girls are loved and encouraged. They were disciplined and guided. Taught not to be victims and never let anyone hold you down not even us. They have been enlighten about their ancestry; African, Choctaw Indian, German, Irish-both sides, English and a few others. The dynamic is great. I pray every child has these blessings. We all God's children made in his image, of one blood. Love one another as he are loved.

@Stephanie His love for his family is not at question. Him showing no concern of a plight that adopted him via your children is concerning. Unfortunately many Afro-Centric women/males bury the reality of who they are once they form relationships outside of their ancestry. Then forming an overflow carrying a nonchalant mentality that affects/effects their spouses and children. Also, we did not establish the definition Black. You still use the terminology but now want to limit it when it comes to your children.

Mixture of African ,Native American and English, Irish and scottish celtic decent. That is the united states as america. So, as a nation you havent been taught properly about the heritage of the united states of america. 4% of "white" americans have african heritage... Thats because they come from years of mixture 3 or 4 generations of mixure of one black and one native american white europeans .... Thats is what you called the white man. So, futhermore 300 years its just a mixture of people. Therefore, mulatto was taken away from you as an identity but thats what americans are by heritage and decent ... @Yvonne Blake Um she asked for us to send in questions and I did just that! I obviously wasn't expecting him to be like "Well they don't have my skin colour, so I rejected them". They're 100% his kids and 100% beautiful just the way they are. I have seen how some biracial women aren't really accepted by both sides, or are accepted by one side and rejected by the other side (Which was also talked about in the video btw). I just wanted to know how he felt about the stigma surrounding his children. And how he prepared his heart to protect his kids against the hate (e.g the weird stares they would receive in public or being called octopus head, which was also discussed in the video). I'm glad she has such an amazing dad, his answers were the best. So no, my question was not "ridiculous".

the question about your dad maybe having a biracial son i think really showed maybe his ignorance to race. I know he thinks the 'I don't really care about colour' answer seems like he's open minded but really its not realistic. You obviously had a different experience because you're black and him being oblivious I don't think really helps. I think the white privilege shows because only a white male can be 'colourblind'. It's really interesting, btw im really not coming for your father he seems like a lovely man, just an observation and thought. Your parents are lovely :)

I like the question of culture. You can look one way but what CULTURE do you identify with? To me culture is about these things: 1. Who you spend your time with 2. How you talk around other people (language, vocabulary, slang, vernacular accent, etc.) 3. Religious beliefs 4. Moral beliefs 5. What you do for entertainment/leisure 6. What you do for work 7. How you enact and respond to social cues 8. Behaviors related to physical appearance It's also important to understand that your culture is BEYOND RACE and stronger than race. Think about it. An African American and European American set of friends may have more in common culturally than an African American and a Nigerian even though the AA and Nigerian are the same race.

I loved this video I'm mixed race too I was born in the U.K where I believe was easier than being mixed in the states but I was a 70's kid and there were only 2 mixed kids in my year group luckily she was a girl too and we became best friends because we looked so similar massive afros that meant we really stuck out. My mum was white and dad black my mum had no knowledge of how to care for my hair and it was basically an afro unless our black neighbors braided it for me. I grew up mainly happy but until high school most of my friends were white and I sometimes wished I was too. My parents were not good at teaching us self esteem and to be proud and happy to be mixed I can see you didn't have that problem. My mum's family especially her mother never really excepted us as her grandchildren she kinda just tolerated us which hurt alot. Anyway enough rambling you are awesome so glad I found you. Sending love from England xxx

My whole thing about people being considered mixed is that there are darker skinned people that are mixed, but because they are darker skinned they aren’t as easily accepted as mixed. Also there are mixed ppl who are mixed with things other than white. A lot of the times it seems like mixed really just means to a lot of folk that you’re a person mixed with black and white that has lighter skin. Or if not lighter skin, lighter eyes, and looser hair texture etc. So much of this is about phenotypes and is centered around whiteness. Which what does it even mean to be white other than being not a person of color? Whiteness is based on not being any other culture rather than being anything in particular culturally.
@GalaxyGirl084 жыл бұрын
Bree Darcel Great observation

Exactly. I feel like it's easy for someone who is so light to tell us all how to identify, but I for example am brown-skinned with dark hair and eyes and more afro-centric features and honestly sometimes it feels like everyone is allowed to call me black and treat me as such, but if I call myself black instead of mixed all hell breaks loose and I am "harming the black community" or "denying one half of myself". And I don't see it that way, because I don't see race as something biological but as a social construct. I identify as mixed because I'm mixed. I identify as black because I look black and am racialized as black. End of the story.

Your father has the luxury and privilege of not having to contend with “race.” He was oblivious to all of the race questions. It simply isn’t accurate to say that Blacks are equally represented in all disciplines and areas of life. It would have been more accurate to say that we are the token minority in every profession and that there needs to be improvement in this area. There are still huge disparities in wealth, income, education, distribution of wealth and ownership of assets. You are a lovely family regardless of the ills of our society.
