Can’t believe you got those aluminium bolts out off the pan without shearing them. Considering the torque is 4nm and they have about the same strength as straw. So I just did this after watching your video, thinking it was going to be easy. Thank you VM for filming this, it helped tremendously - Well if you have a lift it is definitely easy. However I do not have a lift so I did it w jack stands and ramps in my driveway. Audi certainly did not take transmission maintenance into consideration w the Q5 design. There are about 5 different sized/type fasteners (size, heads, hence tools) it takes longer to remove all the hardware, covers, brackets than it does the actual oil change. I removed roughly 4 quarts of fluid from the Transmission, so I added back what I removed in fresh fluid. Removal is certainly faster w a impact driver, but installation of the transmission pan should be done by hand, they are aluminum screws into an aluminum transmission. I changed the fluid at 50k miles and TBH it looked great and if I could have checked it I would not have wasted my $ or time. Overall, it was a PITA and I'll never do it again. Just my 2 cents

The fluid is roughly $45 a quart for the green ZF trans fluid. One time replaced enough fluid to improve shifting, restore the bulk of additives, and remove break in filings that sit in the trans pan & filter for life if not removed. If the fluid wasn't liquid gold we would have used my T-Tech machine which automatically wastes a few quarts just to prime the system.

Good job but you guys are reckless with the gun on the install of those tiny pan bolts. Take an extra few minutes and use a dewalt impact gun, the ones for screws. Then go around by hand and check them. You are not saving any time if you break the flange on the trans. They don't strip, the actual flange brakes off where the bolt hole used to be. Try explaining that to the client.

@fer88888884 жыл бұрын
It depends why it is happening. If it is because of slight valve body wear then the newer thicker transmission fluid can only help the situation. This procedure only replaces about half of the fluid because the other half is in the torque converter. Also if the additives are depleted and causing the problem this procedure can only help. If there is debris sticking a valve/constricting an orfice, or an issue with the pressure control solenoid it probably won't help. From what I have experienced in the past, changing the trans fluid helps those situations.

You have to define lifetime. The car companies define it as the warranty period. Then I would agree it is lifetime if you dump the car when the trans warranty expires. I keep my cars roughly 10 years 200k miles before dumping them. If I called an oil company and asked if the oil would last 10 years 200k miles they would laugh at me and say there are plenty of additives that would deplete well before that. To my knowledge zf has never released a trans fluid spec for the aftermarket to meet. Which is why we bought the overpriced factory fluid just to be on the safe side even though there is nothing special about the parts inside this trans. It looks like same old typical trans parts arranged slightly different. No way to know if they put a special friction modifier for the clutches in the oil. If you are going to drive that car into the ground before getting rid of it, then rule of thumb is change trans fluid every 60-75k miles.

Did you have to check level at a given transmission fluid temp?
@fer88888885 жыл бұрын
There is a temp you are supposed to check it at. I do many different types of trans's with out dipsticks now, in general they always want the trans warm and never hot. The higher the fill the less chance of intermittent oil starvation on steep inclines like parking garages and mountains when going over bumps. The transmission with plugs are nearly impossible to over fill unless you do it hot (aka pull it in right off the highway and jump out quickly to check it, that will leave low on oil, let it sit for 15 minutes, the trans should feel warm but not burning when you touch it.); or you deliberately try to oil fill by injecting a lot of oil in and slapping the plug in as fast as you can. Unless you have the nice expensive scan tool or maybe use an infrared gun, just being slightly warm has worked fine for me. The most important part with this trans is move the wheels through gears fwd and reverse to make sure the stop/stop plunger is filled when checking level in park. Even with out a lift to spin the wheels, you can fill the trans as much as you can, drive it down the block and back, then top off again and repeat until fluid keeps coming out when the plug is removed. Don't be terribly concerned about having a small stream when checking trans level for complete fill. As long as it is not pouring out like a garden hose when the plug is removed, you should be alright. Fuild level about 1/4 from bottom of check plug hole is fine. These steps have worked for me on many cars, if you don't prefer them, then use the manual. Plus do you think the dealer sits there burning up money making job time on the lift waiting for the exact warm temperature and check their lifts with a machinist level to ensure they are racked perfectly flat. Heck no, they get them in and get them out, then say next sucker.
@ajarnott625 жыл бұрын
@@fer8888888 thanks for quick response, did similar on other car and they gave a temp range to check at, but even with infared gun, it is not fluid temp but casing temp. Miss old days of an actual dipstick for transmission.
@fer88888885 жыл бұрын
Aluminum is highly conductive for heat, with in a few minutes the trans housing/oil pan should be very close to fluid temp, so the trans fluid temp shouldn't be to far off, to many people make rocket science out of the trans temp specs, slightly over fill is always better than slightly under. A few of the other Trans's I typically do are the GM 6t40 / 6t45 which I think is 185F to 203F, the 8hp I think is 86F-122F, infiniti/Jatco 7 speed I think is 95F to 113F. Basically you don't want to underfill. After driving for some time, I typically check the trans fluid again to see if the fluid is still at least at the bottom of the check plug opening. The concern with overfilling is aeration of the fluid from the spinning gears. But if you have seen what some of these hybrid transmissions look like inside for design, some of the parts look like they forgot about that concept with designing surfaces. Plus to get aeration with overfill you really got to overfill it for that to happen, slightly high typically won't do it.
@Audigiant5 жыл бұрын
@@fer8888888 You probably meant "nearly impossible to overfill unless you fill it cold??
@fer88888885 жыл бұрын
@@Audigiant Even cold you have to really try cuz of where the port is in relation to the lowest spinning assembly. It would require pumping fluid in with the tube sealing the side port so oil won't come out, then quickly putting the plug back while oil is trying to spew out. The biggest concern with over filled is the oil getting out the vent, and aeration of the fluid from the spinning clutch baskets. But if you have seen what the inside of some hybrid transmissions look like, they are basically egg beaters on the trans fluid and have no issues. Plus a little over filled allows for steeper inclines like big city spiral parking garages with out risks of starving the pump intermittently. These transmissions should definitely be driven at least around the block and then checked again. The torque converter in my Barracuda ZF trans build kzbin.info/www/bejne/rF7XY6hmf8msbZo was quite thirsty after each time I thought the trans was full.
