QNAP QHora-301W Router Long Term Review: WiFi 6 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet!

QHora-301W review! Looking up routers, I've been looking for a combo of fast WiFi and FASTER ethernet! QNAP makes great storage and networking equipment. I use one of their NAS solutions, so pairing that with their new router, we should expect faster local networking! Here are some thoughts running this router for a couple months!

I appreciate the review. 1200mpbs+ cable internet connections are becoming more popular so this router is a great option to affordably pass through a 2.5/5/10gbps lan connection to your desktop, while also having that high speed WAN port for your modem.

Been wanting this router for forever now. I already use Qnap NAS's. The price of this router kept me at bay for a while. Finally scored an open box Qhora-301W off Amazon for $260.

What kind of WAN access do you have? I bought this model in november and I keep having issue with this router. It has been returned twice already... I have a 10Gbps WAN (Salt CH) and among the reboot issues, I systematically have issue when I download stuff (ie: games on Steam, Origin, etc) where the router "looses" WAN access. I have some devices on my network which can exceed 1Gbps speed. Have you ever observed this kind of issues ? On the other side, the configuration is missing so many crucial points regarding networking configuration (no VLAN 1 on trunk...). My last hope is for an OpenWRT port on this product.

Whoa. No. I haven't had any issues like what you're describing with WAN dropping. I'm just using a cheap dumb switch (another QNAP) to connect my NAS and PC faster than 1Gbps. My PC's NIC has had some issues, but the home network has been decently reliable.

@@SomeGadgetGuy I tried also the dual WAN (both connected to the ISP router ), it fails to download the same way as the 10G port does. This product is not reliable to me when you try to go higher than gigabit, which is the basic feature of such product. QNAP support tried to help but each time, their answer was RMA the product back to them... Do you know another router which features dual 10G WAN/LAN ? Do you use VLAN ?

I had not heard of this unit so I'll definitely keep it in mind. I've been updating my wireless cards and will need to upgrade my access point to take advantage of the WiFi 6 cards. I like that it has 2 10GbE ports because I'll need one to go out via PoE injector to a 1GbE switch in the attic.

It's definitely a bit more of a business use, but it's also been really nice for media streaming and backing up phones and laptops.

I like this idea for photo storage. Do you use google photos and if you do, are you going to move away when they start charging for it?

I'm already pulling out of Google Photos. I don't like how Google lumped ALL our storage together, and I'm already paying for OneDrive, so I'm not going to also pay for more GDrive storage. Getting networked storage for photo and video back up is AMAZING. It's silly, but running a little home media server is a blast for music and backing up movies too. My network is ridiculous overkill, but it's sweet delicious ridiculous overkill.

Hey, I was surprised to see your positive long term review on this router. Mine, is rebooting by itself quite often even though it's healthy and firmware updated. From my experience this happens randomly but more specifically when I turn on a device that was not connected to the Internet for a while (TV, console..). Seems like a DHCP issue. Also, it's well ventilated, I even bought laptop fans as a test. It didn't change anything. Do you have any of my issues?

Not at all. Sorry to hear that. Mind has been in constant use since this video, and only down time had been for updates. Highly recommend racing out to qnap.

@@altaresification I had the same rebooting issue and then had an update that resulted in the Qhora stopping to hand out IP Addresses randomly. The random rebooting became a feature since rebooting would usually get it back to providing IP addresses. Until the time to failure became faster. I reached out to Qnap and after two months of sending debug logs and all sorts of other proof they finally gave me a RMA. The new router didn't have issues rebooting (the RMA code sounded like they saw issues with RAM falures) but it did still have the IP Address issue. I am done with Qnap for and am migrating to Ubiquiti this week.

160Mhz wireless, as well as IPV6 support has since been added as firmware updates. I have this unit and it's getting better with each update :)

That's a legit piece of tech for not too much money. Probably 8 or 9 out of 10 in terms of bang for your buck. Of course if your ISP tops out at 1gb and there's no alternative, you are stuck for now, but the wireless carriers seem to be getting ready to really push home internet, and if you're near a mm wave site, you're gonna be in a great position, as long as it's affordable.

This makes it clear, REVIEWERS SHOULD FOCUS ON PROSUMERS, because people aren't that dumb or naive that they need to assume that "CONSUMERS DON'T GET NERD or PRO STUFF BECAUSE THEY WILL BE OVERWHELMED; this patronizing idea is drives normal people away from reviewers, especially who are fair and sane, and makes them take reviewers and tech nerd's words WITH RIDCULE AND CONTEMPT.

It's tricky to say. Going 6E could be a NICE perk if you're living in a busy area. Even 5GHz air is starting to get a bit noisier, especially in apartments and condos. That higher frequency also means higher theoretical top speeds in optimal conditions. That said, the main improvements to WiFi 6 are all the network management and better upstream support. And those are here now. Could be nice to future proof some, but it'll be a while before all the downstream devices support it.
