Excellent! I've been running an old Western digital 3TB ... I make iso files of all my dvds but I don't have any space left... So this looks like I'll have to save up and do a similar QNAP system. Being retired... I'll have to save my "nickels".

I can tell you for certain, it does USE the memory you throw at it. I am currently at 32gb and have seen it fully utilized and I'm getting ready to bump it to 64 to see if it can fully utilize that and if I can see/tell that its being leveraged. Great unit, had mine for about 8 months. Just bumped my drives from 12TB to 18TB, and put the 12TBs into a QNAP expansion bay attached to the TS-464. I'm using 2 WD_Black SN7701TBs for my cache disks.

@@schimor When you go to "Resource Monitor" it shows how much is being used - by breaking the 32GB into 4 categories "Used", "Buffer", "Cache" and "Free". Depending on what I might be doing on the NAS, backups, streaming, updating apps etc - those totals of the categories certainly fluctuate accordingly. At the moment, 7.87GB is used, 4.47GB is buffer, 17.90GB is cache and 893.49MB is free.

@@gmanohio1 I'm surprised that they only spec it as supporting 8gb if the software can actually interpret everything you're throwing at it Thank you, I'm that much more interested in it now!

Holy cow, you did not spare any expense. This might be the most upgraded TS-464 on the internet. Memory upgrades are a great starting point, getting your CPU out of single channel and into dual is a no brainer upgrade. Those 990 Pro’s on the other hand, are way overkill for the PCIe 3.0 speeds of that NAS. But those Pro’s have a great TBW endurance. Which for a NAS could make a difference with years of use. Would I recommend this for most people? Absolutely not, but it was cool to see and I do admit I’m a little jealous. 😂
@737mechanic
@737mechanic Ай бұрын
The only reason I chose the 990's was because they were literally about 5 bucks more expensive than the lower performing drives so I figured why not.

There are all kinds of things you can do with a NAS. I use it as a file server for many files, I used to host a website from it, and I use it as a plex media server so my son in college can still access all the movies we have, I also use it to back up photos and videos we take of our kids and family. The nice thing about it is I can access it from anywhere. It could also be used to run a game server.

Hi I have the smaller model QNAP TS-464 4G 4 Bay NAS, just wondering does your plex server ever just shuts down and sometimes reset the NAS? Mine does I didn't upgrade the RAM, but I did upgrade the M.2 SSD and still it would end up shutting down my NAS, and I don't have any applications on there too. So I am thinking I need more RAM in it maybe, just wanted to know of your NAS does that ever? Let me know very curious on what I am doing wrong thanks with any info or help.

@@737mechanic ok thanks must be my RAM is the problem, because I do use the app called hybrid mount to mount my other NAS and on my PC I have some HDD on there too. How do you link your other NAS to your Plex on the Qnap ts-464? Also I do share my Plex remotely to family in my area too, that must be another factor it might be shutting down my Plex and NAS. Well thanks for the info and clarification on what my problem could be.

NAS drives are the noisiest but they are designed for NAS systems and to be accessed 24/7. But with that said I have WD Black drives in my Synology and it has been on for probably 10 years with no problem and they are whisper quiet.

Absolutely great config but this unit must be bigger. Why? Too hot components in really small place. Cpu, 2 Samsung m2 990 pro around the ram slots. And finally 4 HDDs, hot dissipated half way (sata connectors board) from the back by the big fan that cannot reduce the heat of the main conponents. This will die in a year, not 2. Great all the hardware in that shelf but all need more air to live for years, a mini cabinet with fans could be better with all that inside.
@737mechanic
@737mechanic 5 ай бұрын
The airflow from the fan moves plenty of air to keep everything cool. Under full load when it is heavy transferring files the hottest the CPU gets is 138 degrees F, and the hottest hard drive is #4 and it runs at its hottest 114 degrees F. It's way below the danger zone. Normally the temps are much lower than that but those temps are when it is really working.

@@737mechanic Can you advise me whether this drive is a good choice (WD Ultrastar DC HC570 22TB)? The Ultrastar series is much cheaper in larger capacities than the RED version. They are also supposedly faster. I just don't know whether these drives will be too loud for home use.
