As a native Spanish speaker, I’d say that both “tuve que llegar” and “tenía que llegar” are possible in that example, they just mean different things. “Tenía que” is about the motivation for getting up so early without committing to what actually happened (I was supposed to finish some work at the office); while “tuve que”is stating what you did (I turned up early and finished some work). The Imperfect tense paints the background for a story but is not the story itself, while the Preterite is about the plot of the story. For instance, “estaba lloviendo, y no quería mojarme”(background); así que me quedé en casa” (plot). While, “estuvo lloviendo todo el día; así que la ciudad se inundó (plot point followed by another plot point). It is really difficult to grasp the subtle differences at times. I often tell my students to ask if it can be put on a timeline (Preterite) or otherwise removed entirely without affecting the plot (Imperfect).

This is really helpful! My Spanish teacher (in Spain) told me that the reasons for doing things should be explained using the preterite imperfect tense, because they have no exact start or end date.

This is what Im trying to do now. First I wrote down categories of conversation that Im likely to talk about, then come up with starter sentences, eg. ordering food, gardening, using tools, history, nature. This lets me focus on the vocabulary I need rather than things I will likely never be involved in.

Very well constructed video. Thank you Paul. I wanted to share, as an english speaker living in spain for a year, to learn the language. I've discovered a beautiful show that was just launched on Prime. Called Zorro. It's new. it's a series, and im able to set the cc to spanish so i can read while i watch. The dialog for learning with the subtitles turned on is the best of any program I've seen since I've been here, coming up on 1 year. I would encourage my fellow intermediates to check it out. Audio is not in english. Its in spanish. But it's very easy to follow and enjoy. Thanks for keeping all my spain referrals engaged. I remember when you used to say, i dont teach spain spanish. Maybe you should post a survey asking where we are watching from. I feel like since i subscribed last april, your spain expat subscriber base has become a very significant part of your viewership/subscribership. Nos encantariamos a saber. Take care. -de Cadiz

Once again, great video Paul! What I have learned from you: learn the subjunctive and don’t be scared of it. Got it! What I still need to learn from you: don’t put everything in the present subjunctive because the imperfect subjunctive also exists … whoops! I didn’t do great on the intermediate nor advanced sentences, but I do love this format. I came up with “Yo había llevar (I meant llegar dang it!) temprano así que mi jefe no sabía que ayer me olvidé terminar un proyecto importante.” The part of the lesson at 13:45 explaining to use “olvidarse de terminar” or “olvidar terminar” is extremely valuable, I unfortunately just made up my own rules. I’ll keep trying though.

Wondering if someone can help me better understand the following translation: "I'm going to lift you up, so you can see show.", which becomes "Te voy a levantar ver el espectáculo." according to a friend from Argentina. I would have thought two subjects would imply "Te voy a levantar ver el espectáculo." and his reply was that "Te voy a levantar ver el espectáculo." is acceptable. Is this acceptable "Te voy a levantar ver el espectáculo. and if not, why not?

@@QrooSpanish I challenge you to take the Clozemaster 10 languages 10 questions each challenge. Pick any 10 languages video yourself taking the challenge and inspire us. (whether you have studied are familiar with or not). This is a fun opportunity to showcase your talent with a little bit of humility proving you too are human and still a language learner. You can put the flags of the 10 languages you choose for the challenge in both the thumbnail and the title and tag the video as #takingtheclozemaster 10 languages challenge. While also tagging the languages of the challenge. When choosing from a diverse variety of languages consider this, to include some of those you're familiar with, those that you are not, and those that you will later learn. Choosing to include a conlang like Interlingua and an ancient language like Latin will keep the challenge diverse while bringing recognition to these languages (you may surprise yourself). Consider getting a hold of Clozemaster they may be interested in sponsoring the video. We as a community of language Learners need a challenge that we can all appreciate and try together. To get the most out of the video challenge adjust the settings as follows: put the skills to listening, the question count to 10, and the mode to multiple choice. Then you can adjust the account to dark mode (as it's more attractive) and the default speed to 75% for better hearing the questions. Doing a dry run will ensure all the settings are correct. Keep a notepad by your side to keep track of the language scores. Before you end the video it would be nice if you encouraged other polyglots and language Learners to take up the challenge. Buenas suerte Carpe Diem السلام عليكم

Imagine that there are a lot of native Spanish speakers out there who don’t/can‘t role the “r”. Just relax! Your English pronunciation of that letter (like in the word “bring”) will do to get you understood. During time you will pick it up like the native speakers do 😉 Don’t stress yourself about it! There’s much more important for English mother tongues like pronouncing the vowels correctly 🤷♀️
