As a C6-C7 quad myself I just want to say how important and influential you are to everyone who's going through these changes for the first time. It is so unbelievably difficult in the beginning. And for you, and others like you, to put yourself out there to try and help is so commendable. You deserve all the praise and support. Best wishes, and thank you for everything.

Just ran into your video tonight. I’m disabled and not a wheelchair user (yet). Before I became disabled, I used to help with some caretaking duties for a friend with MD. There’s such a huge spectrum of disability out there that it’s really helpful to see what you’re putting out here. I think it helps not just folks who just became injured in a similar way, but it can potentially help abled teachers & employers understand all the stuff folks have to get through on the way to school or work (or anywhere else people are going). Thanks for what you’ve shared (and thank you to your caretaker as well for being cool with it being filmed).

It’s so important for people to see just how people with disabilities live and have a new normal they have to work with. I’m disabled with a degenerative syndrome and will likely end up in a chair, and already find it very difficult to look after myself. Thank you for sharing your life and point of view. It helps so much with awareness and empathy from those who watch. Keep doing you 👍

My best friend from childhood was paralyzed in a car accident a few years ago and I appreciated his candid conversation with me about his routines and issues, it was a pleasure he trusted me to help him for a time. It was and still is an adjustment for him with many new challenges along the way...compliance with his personal care routine is what makes all the difference. Thank you for sharing.

I was injured at 38 years old 20 years ago. Almost 60 now I do almost everything from the bed. I bathe in the bed with waterproof pads, even wash my hair in the bed. I also do all my bowel and bladder needs from the same bed that I sleep in. I would suggest using an alternating pressure pad pump and mattress if you're bedridden. This helps to eliminate pressure sores which can be deadly. Having access to the internet makes this kind of life a lot easier. I can't imagine what they did before the modern era. I know that life expectancy was far shorter back then...

Sincere Questions, apologies if insensitive: I always thought Quadriplegic meant a loss of 4 limb mobility? I assume I had the wrong idea. How long have you been disabled? Your legs still appear to have good definition and range. How long did it take you/did you get over the psychological aspect of lack of privacy and independence? Do you build a genuine connection with your caregiver, (friendship) or does it remain purely that of caregiver? Did you maintain your same friendship circles? Was there significant challenges to remaining friends without any feeling of being a burden, pity, inability to attend some activities etc? Do you suffer from depression (as a result of your disability, not in general)? If yes, how do you cope with it? Mad respect to you man. Love from South Africa.
@coreyaustin142 жыл бұрын
Very good questions! Quadriplegic or quadriplegia means impairment in all four limbs, not necessarily a total loss. So my hand function is actually pretty bad and I have one tricep on my left side that still kind of works. I just made 12 years since my injury and because I do my morning range of motion and stretching every day, I like to think that is why they are like that. I believe the first two years are the hardest for anyone with a spinal cord injury. You are learning your body, adjusting to your new life, accepting help, ETC. Actually, you just inspired me. I will answer all these questions in a video!

Body weight? Will it increase over the years ahead? In Sydney, Australia, my employer was the Australian Quadriplegic Association, 1978_85. My caregiver job, before my own serious car accident, 1984, was too many quadriplegic adults, men and women. There was no training at that time. From your comments & questions, there is so much to explain to outsiders.

Good job Corey. It's no crime asking for help when you really need it. My mom (who passed away in 1996 from Cancer) used to be my caregiver and I had to rely on her to washed and dressed me. But, my Physical Therapist said it was time to learn how dressed myself and how to shower on my own. So, yes I feel like a Champ because I can do some things on my very own. It may take me longer than average but, getting ready on my own is Victory for me. Thanks Corey for sharing your morning routine. Have a wonderful Summer. And please make more videos. 👍👍🙂😎🙂👏👏👕👖

if you can use your hands dosent that make you a paraplegic not quad? Paraplegia refers to the loss of movement and sensation in both legs and, sometimes, part of the lower abdomen. Quadriplegia affects all four limbs and, sometimes, parts of the chest, abdomen, and back. Both are forms of paralysis that often result from injury to the spinal cord.

I have a question. You have use of your arms, how is it you are considered a quadriplegic? Does para mean 2 and quad mean 4? No disrespect meant, actually curious. Good luck in your endeavours!
@coreyaustin142 жыл бұрын
No disrespect taken at all. Actually when I get called a para that actually feels like a compliment. But quadriplegia is defined by impairment in all four limbs, not necessarily total loss. So like I don’t have very good hand function and I have the use of my tricep on my left arm. Thanks for watching!!
