I'm a student at UWS & just received the feedback and grade for my undergraduate dissertation. I just want to say thanks. I've never been an A student so I'm really happy with the result (2/1). As a former radio professional, it is one thing to create content, but quite another to land the content and these videos hit the mark in slickness & delivery. Dr Kriukow delivers in spades. I was looking for videos which provided clear, concise worked examples of the elements essential to my thematic analysis (Nationalism in my case but the same principles will apply elsewhere). The reason I know these tutorials contributed massively to my grade is because of the feedback which praised the clarity, thought process, explanation of the data and the layout of my thematic analysis. Invaluable. I'm 100% certain that my grade would have been so much worse without these tutorials. It is in no way a substitution to coursework or a shortcut to success but I'm certain these tips will turbocharge any submission ✌️

Thank you for such an informative and easy-follow video on thematic analysis. I have learned a lot from your videos. I do have a question about the development of a model of the results. In my mind, the development of a model should illustrate the logical relationships between the developed themes and interpret how the relationship has been developed. I am not sure whether I am right about this. Should I find evidence from the qualitative data that underpins their relationship or I can just establish them based on my own interpretation? Thanks for your time. It would be great to hear from you.
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher Жыл бұрын
This would be based on your interpreation because remember, to talk about relationshps in qual research is generally tricky. Thus, you can talk about something that indicates some links but be very careful about actually making claims about strong relationships

Dr. Kriukow, my thesis investgtated factors affecting learning. I have classified them into three main categories: psychological, contextual; and linguistic. I have a round 14 factors. when I list them in the thesis, is there a specific approach to do this. i.e. starting with the most reported! what other approaches can I use to write up the results section?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher Жыл бұрын
Yes, I usually organize them from the most to the least reported, when it comes to sub-themes within themes. The themes themselves, I organize them in a way in which I want to discuss them so that there is a nice and clear narrative to my findings

Really helpful content! I have a quick question. You said that we can make subheadings of our themes in the results sections. After watching this and your other video about how to discuss themes, I have a question that can we repeat those same subheadings of themes in our discussion chapter also? If not, then what is the alternative?
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher Жыл бұрын
it depends on how you are planning to organize that chapter - each discussion chapter is different, but if you plan to take each theme and discuss its relevance to the literture, one by one, I don't see any reason not to do what you mentioned - but be careful not to sound repetitive!

I am three minutes in and I already feel more organized. I'm writing my masters and I do not know how to start writing, and it does not help that my professor has given me some rather vague suggestions. Mostly I have been stuck with the whole "you need to present your themes" because my themes correlate heavily to my research questions, and I couldn't understand how to present them. Doing it in an explicit manner: Theme 1 etc, feels crazy for what my research has led to. The literature I have also haven't helped me much, since all it says is that "thematic analysis is difficult to define and can vary greatly".

Although the specific details may differ depending on the study, overall the steps involved in CA will be pretty much the same as those in thematic analysis which I discuss in some of my videos. Methodologically there are not many differences, it is more about what you are paying attention to and looking for (e.g. you will still develop codes and themes but perhaps you will be more interested in specific, previously determined content and its frequency of occurence)

Hello, I would like to ask please if am conducting a qualitative research about a brand like Gucci so my data collection is through document and books only, how to gather data? do I take quotes from documents as data to later categorize under themes?

@@aideebatarse6204 hi, no I am actually doing a master research. I am still putting my thesis design. The topic is entrepreneurship in fashion, Gucci as case study. So I am adopting a narrative qualitative method and thematic analysis according to my research so far. I have never done qualitative before and I am confused how to gather data! Would it be quotes from docs I will read or what

Dear Dr.Kriukow, Hi, You are amazing.... Many thanks for your great explanations and clarifications in the realms of qualitative analysis. I learned many things from you. Would you please be kind enough to explain about how to write discussion? And what should we do exactely step by step in order to have a perfect discussion part? Kindest regards, Fatemeh an MA candidate from Iram ❤🧡💛💚

Thank you so much Dr.💎 Actually I am doing a narrative inquiry research and my data analysis is a thematic design. So, I don't know how to write the discussion part. Should I talk just about the core themes or also the subthemes in regard to the literature? I would be thankful if you explain in details. Waiting for your great vedio in the realms of discussion like always. All the Best,⚘ Fatemeh

How to do thematic analysis of story recall? I want to collate the feedback into themes based on the scenes of the story.

You can do this then. Qualitative analysis is a flexible process, as long as you make it rigorous by coding the data first (which is to avoid being biased or missing important things - I have several videos about coding and data analysis), you can then organize the findings the way you want

HI thanks for this video its really helpful! I was wondering how many quotes should i use for point i am making. I have done 24 interviews and i am using about 3 - 5 quotes / point. Is this enough ? I am writing a PhD thesis and the interviews are part of the exploratory stage of the research not the main findings
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 2 жыл бұрын
There's really no rule for this. It depends how skillfully you are using the quotes. I always say it is good to use some evidence from the data, so I think some quotes are needed, but on the other hand I have seen lots of cases where quotes were overused and the person relied on them too heavily. You need to make sure that all quotes are justified and that the reader always understands why he/she is reading the quote. It's important to prepare them for what they are about to read, in other words. They should also be incorporated into the rest of the discussion, and avoid just simply listing one quote after another

Hello! When talking about having a table for presenting the themes, and also a number for how many times a theme is discussed, you mentioned that, by this way, a reader can know if a theme is strong or not, and that a theme discussed many times is stronger than a theme mentioned only once by just one participant. I understand your point. But, I wanted to ask you. A professor told me that a theme is a group of codes, and that a code alone can't be a theme. So, how it it possible for a theme to be discussed only once by one participant? Also, is it true that a code alone can't be considered as a theme? I'm not sure if everyone agrees on this...
@qualitativeresearcher
@qualitativeresearcher 2 жыл бұрын
yeah there is a bit of a mix up. I would not say that a theme can be developed from 1 code, or from a thing one person mentions, so if I said that - apologies. What is possible, however, is that a Sub-theme can. Thus, if 1 person mentions 1 specific challenge that she faces at work (let's say "bullying"), and we do have a Theme "CHallenges at work" (which was developed because several people discussed their Challenges at work), then "bullying" can be a sub-theme of "Challenges at work". But this is because Challenges at work was developed as a theme based on the fact that several people mentioned this topic Hope this helps!
