The game feels like an alpha build and it's frustrating. There are so many places where you can see what the devs *wanted* to do if they had more time. Hell, shops give you stuff for free because they didn't put in a money system!

Game had the developement restarted some times and a tight mid 1998 deadline, so they had to rush to finish it and didn't had enough time to make what they really wanted with the game, like party members (the pirate was also supposed to be one of the playable characters) and all. The "demake" for Game Boy (that the video briefly mentions) actually improves the story and adds a lot of lore for the world and characters.

I remember not having a memory card for this game so i had to beat it without shutting off the game, but that made it actually easier because simply running around with your avatar anywhere (like in town) will build up agility experience, so after using an elastic band on my controller to keep me running in circles would go to bed and wake up 8-10 hours later and have so many agility levels that nothing in the game could hit me.

True, some enemies eventually started to landing a few hits(do magic attacks ignore evasion? I don't remember), and with no memory card, I never wanted to risk a gameover because it didn't know if I could continue, so I grinded and searched a lot everywhere. With enemies most of the game not being able to hit me and me wandering lost for hours I raised my attack/magic levels so high killing everything that the def and hp didn't matter as much. But if I tried rushing through after just and only training my agility stat then there would be issues. @@Larsgman

I still remember as a kid how much me and my bro's cheesed this game at like 10yrs old. We noticed our speed went up by running, so we thought of this crazy idea to run in a circle in the first town and unplugged the controller, which would have him run forever as long as the controller was unplugged. We woke up to him having 255 speed in the first town lol. I got this as one of my first games at 6, when I didn't know how to speak english, it was so confusing me and my sister called it "the forbidden game". We kept on trying and eventually beat it, although we called the main character "Quest" the whole time because that was the name of the game and we had no choice but to skip all dialogue. The mere fact that it was an RPG was mesmerising to us, because we compared how strong the character was compared to the beggining and said "Wow, Quest is so strong now"

Biggest issue with the game balance was how overpowered Earth was. I thought the four elements was really cool, and so did the devs! Once you learn Magic Barrier, you are functionally invincible to every attack from almost every enemy for the rest of the game.

I never knew earth and water were overpowered until youtubers said so. Apparently you can easily beat the game with just water+earth. As a child though, I increased all elements at about the same rate, more or less. I often had a preference for water (healing) and wind (agility), and then earth for avalanche. But still, I tried to shift between all elements all the time. I never found the game being broken due to imbalance thanks to that.

Back in 1998, this was literally Nintendo’s answer to Final Fantasy VII, which came out 9 months earlier. I can’t think of a bigger misstep. It may have been better for the system to just not release any RPGs and just focused 100% on “party games”, which seemed like the system’s strength.

This game got me hooked on searching every nook and cranny of every game I played since because of the seemingly non-logical placements of the little spirit thingies. I remember just walking down a path and just noticing a small glint in the distance, so I went off the path to check it out and it was a random spirit just chilling beside a cliff and it blew my mind... I had to backtrack every spot I'd been to to check every spot, and sure enough I missed a lot of things. Now I check EVERYTHING in every game lol. It was a good lesson to learn.

You hit the nail on the head with this one. Got this game as a kid and I've owned my same copy ever since. The music, the colors, the fun animations and cartoony nintendo graphics are charming. The gameplay is addicting with trying to unlock new abilities or higher ranks of spells which have that great feeling of being noticeably stronger and making you feel more bad ass. Game is not perfect as you said but I think that it is worth a look for any rpg lovers.

17:47 The area in the desert is really neat imo, I felt like it was one of the few secret places in the game that was not just another dead end. **Spoliers** Shamwood is an Oasis within the Dindom Dries vast desert. Lavaar is an NPC there with some extra lore; the area was genuinely cool looking for an N64 game. There are several spirits and item chests that could be useful if someone is having a playthrough. It is an optional area, but due to Quest 64’s leveling system, it might be worth the stop if you want a few extra elements and items for your journey.

I worked on a worse N64 RPG (Aidyn Chronicles the first mage) way back and I can tell you that this is pretty amazing knowing how limited the N64 was. Can you imagine packing a level into 100-150kb! A lot of our problems came from how hostile Nintendo was in supporting non-Japanese developers as well.

I received portent of this review years ago, as I was recovering in a medieval Spanish chapel. The gypsy lady told me a Canadian using Alfalfa’s barber would create the greatest review of the century, seen by half of Newfoundland, their pet moose, and one fat guy in desolate hellscape of America. She told me I’d name my two children Treeky and Boi, right before I got divorced for the first time. In the meantime, I’m going to submit your transcript as my next essay for my Chaucer class. They should just give me my Masters then. All told, this review is 10 out of 10 on the universal Highschool of the Dead metric.

As an adult, I listen to the OST because it's so dreamy and takes me back to a better time. I loved the graphics of the game, it was very impressive when it first came out. The spells were fun to watch once you upgraded them enough and the cities were beautiful, especially Limelin. Brannoch Castle had a sense of mystery to it. I can write an whole essay on it, but I'll cut it short. Quest 64 was my introduction into JRPGs and even though it could have definitely been improved, it still has its charm and I loved it.

I absolutely love this game. Played again a few months ago and it holds up. I remember in high school only one of my friends had played it, and I was singing its praises, but he hated it because of the combat. You nailed the problems with combat, and maps, but as an expansion on what you mentioned about which elements to build, water really does feel required. Sure you can play without it, but the heals are invaluable. You're only allowed one free bread of each at a time, so never get one from a chest unless you already have the one from the shop or you essentially just threw one away. It really does feel like there's no happy medium. You either go full heals with water, or only rely on bread, which is basically nothing. It's not like modern souls games where you can learn to dodge almost everything. You will get hit by most things once in a while.

Fun game... but honestly what pissed me off about it is something that i didn't actually learn till i saw it in a gdq, and what was removed from the english version when it was localized over was the feedback glow that happened when you leveled up a stat and it was a different color based on stat or element. Without it your status just increased without you knowing and you never actually knew you were getting stronger, so it didn't feel like you had to do anything but find the white whisps to level up your elements, which incidently got you bodied by bosses in 2 hits a little while later. If i knew that as a kid then i likely would have liked this game a lot more then i did, but after watching that gdq run, i grinded while keeping track of my increasing stats and after a while my hp was massive and i was one shotting enemies with my staff, much more enjoyable after that. That said im an rpg fan and the n64 had around.... 5 rpgs in total (all decent ones mind you), but honestly i took what i could get, for better, or for worse 😂

"I know we usually send our best fighters, mages, and warriors, but I'm thinking this time... we send a little boy" Your humor deserve more recognition man, easily made a 25 minute video fly by with me wanting more

I love your sense of humor and self awareness. A lot of game review channels try to be funny, but this is genuinely funny and informative at the same time.

Ayy i love to hear that and it means a lot to me! I definitely want to explain the game but add in things that i think are dumb or make me laugh and i think that works in my benefit 🤣

By the grace of the mysterious KZbin algorithms, I was suggested this video of yours. I'm glad, too! I too grew up playing this game during the Great N64 RPG Drought. One of my strongest memories was running around in the tall grass and seeing only Brian's "Alfalfa" hair and laughing because it looked like a chicken running around. Anyways, great video and editing, the bread and other humor callbacks were on point and didn't get stale (hahaha oh puns). Keep up the great work! Subscribed!
