I currently have a Volvo S60 and little over a month ago placed an order for a Volvo V60. I have always liked the look of a station waggon since I was a kid and my mom had one and I absolutely dislike SUVs. So Zach I’m splitting the difference and going with the V60. Having said that I do plan on keeping the S60

I, for one, am glad SUVs exist. We just bought a Highlander to have more room, being a 6’ family, and to bring more with us when camping (tables, food, etc). It is interesting there are so many more SUVs out there than cars and vans though.

Did you see the article today in Australia from Cars Guide about the Nissan Leaf? Keep in mind Australia and Canada have almost exactly the same pricing as our dollars are basically on par. Nissan Australia just dropped the price of the leaf by $16,000! That makes a car that used to be around $51,000 into a car that's now $35,000 to make it more competitive with Chinese competition. Not having Chinese competitors here in Canada means we're still paying $51,000 in Canada for a Nissan Leaf!

Is this price drop happening in the future? Currently $40k in Australia and $45k in Canada. But technically the Australian dollar is worth about 90% of CAD, so the price gap is a bit larger than the $5k previously mentioned.

@robertt9342 you have that backwards. $1 AUS = 0.91¢ CDN. This means the Canadian dollar is worth more. $40,500 CDN will convert to/or buy $50,000 AUS. So in Canada we are paying $50,588 CDN or $55,481.32 AUS for a Leaf SV Plus, yet Australians are paying $35,000 AUS or $31,850 CDN for the same car.

To Zack's point about older PHEVs with "poor battery range." I had a 2022 with a 22 mile battery for one year. Total consumption recorded at the pump was 58 mpg. The charging cost was $13 a month at ~13 cents per kWh. If I didn't have a 41 mile battery in my '23 I'd happily take that one back.

Since this was recorded, the US announced tariffs on Chinese built vehicles will increase to 100%. New brands like BYD would have to establish good servicing before I would consider buying one. Some BYDs do look good though.

If you're in California, an EV should be a no-brainer if you have the financial fundamentals. The consistent warm weather and good charging network makes that area very battery friendly. The new EVs that are holding their value are long range, but also weren't made during the covid supply shortages, so they don't have missing features or other oddities. Plus, the battery refurbishing industry is picking up so people have options if something happens to the battery outside of warranty. About depreciation -- People depend too much on the resale value of their old car to buy their new one. Keeping their current car for the long-term, paying off the loan, and consistently saving for the new car in a high-yield savings account keeps you from needing to worry about depreciation. Plus, it simplifies the buying process when you don't need your trade-in to buy a new vehicle.

Sorry for the long comment, but Here are some Thoughts suggestions from someone who has driven Plug-in Electrics for over 18 months I can say our experience is that ours have done exactly what they are supposed to do if you plug them in religiously. In our case our average daily drive is under 50 Km and can be done all electric depending on the weather and how we drive the vehicle. The exceptions are if you need heat right away, or the windows cleaned right away, or you “floor-it” a lot, your engine will come on and you will be burning gas.Over the long term you expect to average about 2 l/100km of gas. The ones we. Have owned force you to burn Gas approximately every 3 months, which is a good thing for the Gas engine and parts associated. So here is My main concern if you plan to keep your vehicle past the Battery warranty you will probably be throwing the vehicle in the trash if the battery croaks. So you will be driving around with that “Monkey” on you back every day after your warranty is over. I have enough stress just dealing with this nutty world without buying some more and piling it on. So its Lease for us now or no fully electric vehicles in the garage. Non plug-in hybrids would be fine or efficient ICE ones for daily drive. So here is the suggestion part: If the government wants us all zooming around like “the Jetsons” by 2035 stop putting money directly in the pockets of the car Manufacturers thru rebates and instead they should focus on “killing stress Monkeys” by simply providing extended battery warranty protection. For starters they could begin by say matching the manufacturers battery warranty and have it on a sliding scale reducing over time. Combined with this they could tie their extended warranty to some manufacturers minimum warranty amount. If the manufacturer’s Vehicle battery Warranty does not reach some ceiling set by the Government their vehicle does not qualify for any of or possibly the full government coverage. This will put the manufacturers in a competitive “if you build it they will come” race to provide better battery warranties to get that government prize passed on to us “Jetsons”. If the you have any comments or suggestions “have at it”.Right now the Government is dangling the "rebate carrot" in front of us when they could and should be dangling the "warranty extension carrot" in front of the car manufacturers.

After almost three years in one, then the second, PHEV (41 mile battery) I can report 104 mpg annually, about $35 a month to charge at $.165 per kWh. Most importantly, compared to what? My last 4 cyl ICE driven the same way on the same Pennsylvania roads for six years, got 29.7 mpg. By the time I'll need a new PHEV battery the market will provide reasonable prices, just as it has for the Prius. But for the larger EV batteries, probably not.

Getting A PHEV with a fast charging battery and being able to use Tesla chargers seems like the best long term greenish vehicle for overall ownership cost. One where the battery doesn’t hang down low and cripple itself if driving over a rock on the road.

@@billurban1581 you are right that the avg person doesn’t need to charge a phev outside of their home, but if I am going into a store/mall where there are Tesla chargers, it makes sense to plug it in on days where I predict that I will go over the EV only range. The best part about phev is having to option to burn gas when charging is not convenient. Before the availability of the Tesla network, it was never convenient away from home. Someday all of the Tesla chargers will be in use and then having access won’t be such a great thing.

Actually JAC manufactures in Mexico and BYD, Tesla and SEV are all coming (plus others). I’ve driven a few Chinese ICE vehicles and didn’t like them, too much turbo lag. Also they have a bad reputation in Mexico for limited parts availability and poor service.I did try an MG EV called ZS it was great for only about $36k usd. You two should consider a vacation here in lovely Puerto Vallarta and you could drive many Chinese cars to get a better idea. Mind you Ford sells Territory here and Buick the Envision, made in China anyway. Not sure where our Teslas come from. That said BYD is expanding rapidly in Mexico and I am excited to try their EVs which are of better quality. Chinese cars are inexpensive and the style is pretty great they certainly don’t look cheap and they are very popular despite service issues. There are as you said around 20 now.

The issue is that they keep improving range and charging of the new model year EV's. A new vehicle is better then the previous year so the resale value tanks.
Imo, if the ingress/egress/seating position of cars (lookin at you all honda products) were not so low and drivers did not feel as if they were sitting on the tarmac, more people would buy them. Imo, the majority of cuv/suv buyers purchase them because the seating position is higher. Punto! Car makers in their quest for lower, wider, sleeker have lowered roof lines, lowered seating positions thus shooting themselves in the foot.

Since my first car in the early 70s, I have been a big wagon lover, like Zack, but for those of us no longer 23, regularly sitting your butt down just a few inches off the tarmac, not to mention (regardless of age) not being able to see over or around the big world of SUVs out there is difficult and often daunting. I think the idea of modestly jacked wagons is the best compromise. The Outback is the most extreme example of that, clearance wise, and excels... but, for those wanting a little bit more urbane look and function, there are also the more mild lifted ones such as the Audi A4 and A6 Allroad, the Mercedes E Series All-terrain, Volvo Cross Country, as well as the VW Golf Alltrack (RIP) and the criminally never-offered-on-these (NA)-shores VW Passat Alltrack,...all with just enough better stance off the ground for easier entry / exit, clearance for at least "cottage roads" in the winter, and better able to handle the potholes of the urban jungle and lousy dips and divots on secondary roads that are an everyday reality for so many areas. For those really wanting or needing an SUV or high-roof crossover, great.... however for those who are SUV and crossover averse, all of these examples at a glance can pass for just a regular car / wagon, can handle similarly enough for most people that the difference is negligible. Win-win. I am one of those many millions who has drunk the SUV/crossover Kool-Aid and while pleased for the same reason everyone else claims, it is more vehicle than I need daily. I miss the wagons my family and then later I used to have! But they would (as I guess the Volvo V's may be as well in some settings) be too low in today's environment. Jacking them up an almost imperceptible (visually) few inches would not hurt that appeal; it would only "raise" it!

That's backwards. Lots of us buy a vehicle for at least 100,000 km / miles, and depreciation is really a minor factor, where energy is a major part of the cost to own.

@@acchaladka I wouldn’t quite call it backwards, because depreciation doesn’t end at 100k, and is why I had indicated it be done over various time periods. There could simply be a separate score for 50k, 100k, 150k…..whatever. I understand that the depreciation is much less relevant later in a car’s life. I have 195k on my current vehicle, and it’s still running and able to pull my landscape-style trailer. Energy, while a major cost-factor, has many variables, and can more easily (although not easy) be calculated by the individual. These include varying energy prices, types of use, ways and times of charging, etc. I was looking more for the cost of buying, maintaining, and selling the vehicle, as opposed to daily fuel expenses.

One factor, cost to propel. Over 16,000 miles my S60 Recharge required 7.9¢ per mile, ~4.2 electric, 3.7 gas. Last ICE would have been 13.6¢ per mile, using my same $3.84 per gallon av cost.

17:44 "can you stay within the EV range" with a PHEV? I have a 41 mile battery and while that is the optimum, I often drive 100 miles in mine and burn well under two gallons. And month to month, electric propels my car for about 70% of my miles. In the US, the average round trip commute is about 30 miles, the av trip is about 12.

I think the 100% tariff that the US now imposes on Chinese-built EVs is insane. The EU could start to impose taxes on Chinese-built EVs in the near future, but I can't imagine it will be as high as the US's. That's why Chinese manufacturers are establishing plants in Europe to get around this, eg BYD's future car plant in Hungary, and Chery is likely to build cars in Spain.

You're quite right, end corporate subsidies for these guys! The politicians are indeed no one's friend but their own, right in line with that pursuit of self-interest people who misunderstand Adam Smith always seem to support. Thought, though: I'm against corporate welfare, but the car industry you work for was almost entirely built by public money and every dollar we spend on roads today rather than effective rapid and frequent transit, is a sop to the rich people who can afford to drive cars rather than the common worker bee who has to spend thousands on a jalopy rather than hundreds on convenient transit like they do in Japan or Europe. Meanwhile, cars manufactured abroad and sold here at a lower price are a real boon to the (richer) consumer, and then we all wonder why there's no affordable frequent mass transit options. The answer obviously is to stop _all_ corporate welfare, outlaw combustion cars for the health damage they do to all of us and future Canadians, (not to mention the massive number of deaths we suffer as a society), keep EVs legal for the rich, and put even 25% of our current road budgets directly into mass transit. So we know much more about your politics now, and by your own admission, you're still not auto industry or public policy experts. Meanwhile, thanks for making the public dialogue about climate change and the car industry, not richer with your half-considered positions here.

Are you aware that Volvo manufacturers ICE models in China and imports them into Canada? IT might be smart to start looking at the origin stickers on the cars you test to see where they are actually built.

I agree, and I think that the Audi A7 is the best looking sedan ever. But the Accord fails badly - it has the right silhouette but it lacks the details needed to actually look good.

Here in QC, depreciation of EVs is not as high as other places where EVs are not as much in demand.... so I guess it all depends on location

I already see Chinese cars on the road. Saw a polestar 2 the other day… owned by a Chinese company (Geely) and manufactured in China. Volvo cars have been Chinese cars since 2010. Volvo trucks are still Swedish.

Volvo and Polestar are both Swedish subsidiaries of Geely. Most Volvos are made in Europe or the US. Volvo along with BMW, Mercedes and many other legacy brands make cars in China. Chinese manufacturer: Geely; BYD, MG, etc. Chinese manufactured: misc models of essentially ALL brands, including most legacy European brands This is a big difference and I’m frankly tired of the conflation and weird China-scare discourse.

US has increased the tariff from 25% to 100% on Chinese EVs. Not sure what would happen to Volvo Ex30 as it is manufactured in China

I've read that it's exempt because of Volvo's South Carolina plant. The EX30 will soon be made in Belgium as well.

The reason people are buying SUVs is because of their utility. People need something besides a truck to go to Costco and Home Depot and pick up their stuff.

Dont need solid state, too expensive too long to get to market. CATL the world ls largest battery company announced 1,000,000 mile battery warranty with only 5% degradation. This with current LFP batteries...

Chinese EV. Polestar is a chinese EV car using Volvo name as seller. soon BYD will use Vinfast name as seller for their chinese EV. nothing wrong with chinese EV as long as you don't need ship your car to chinese to repair because the part is not available here.

It seems with people traveling more and realizing the EV infrastructure still isn’t what it needs to be, people are switching back to ICE’s or hybrids. Especially with the range getting longer and longer for plug in hybrids they are making great commuter cars and family trip cars with the security of the gasoline engine when the PHEV range has been depleted.

In the fall of 2021, I was considering trading in my 2020 Kona EV for a 2022 Ioniq 5 EV. In the fall, I was quoted x amount for the trade-in. The following spring (2022), I finalized the deal and actually got *a couple of thousand* more than the original trade-in quote. The Ioniq 5 was a very good EV and got over 500 kms (summer weather) with a typical depreciation that wasn't excessive. Lease, don't buy an EV is the moral to my story. I now have a 2024 Tucson hybrid.

For the protectionism, it’s just dumb to have all trade wars.. the idea of having enemies is costing ppl. It’s cheap labour over there, we need to utilize it to benefit us all and spend our tax on smth better that we can do better. I’m not saying that about the western but the human kind just can’t help but to stand against each other out of selfishness.. that’s just costly for us all, them and everyone.
