Fun fact, Ray Park, the actor for Darth Maul is an actual martial artist and gymnast. You can tell by how he’s more agile than McGregor and Neeson and his movements with the lightsaber come off as very smooth and natural. He’s also shorter than both Neeson and McGregor, with his height being 5’9. A lot of the best gymnasts and acrobats tend to be shorter, and there’s a reason why. Being shorter actually helps in those fields because it’s easier to move and spin your body with a compact build. Shorter people also tend to have better balance because their center of gravity (which is usually around the abdomen), is lower to the ground, and the lower the center of gravity is to the base of support, the better the balance will be. Many of the greatest acrobats and gymnasts are on the shorter side.

Qui Gon was so underrated. He was an aggressive, strong attacker in this duel. Only his age worked against him.

Every jedi practiced all standard saber fighting forms, it's just that certain people excelled in specific categories above others. Qui gon valued life and knowledge of the force but common sense in this instant would dictate going against an agile dathomirian zabrak wielding an unorthodox weapon to be on the offensive and apply pressure, he was still a master and earned it through skill

@@user-mg7wh8zq6v I think thats a bit of short sighted take, if you're watching their body language there is a clear moment where Qui Gon is visible confused by Maul spinning his lightsaber Its a moment of hesitation Maul notices this and realized he's wary and unsure of which blade will hit next Its an opening he then exploits in an unorthodox way, a hilt bash to the head the exact opposite of what Qui Gon was being wary of. Its stupid but clever.

It's definitely not, but it's honestly just almost on par with this and we should give it more credit for our sake so we get that kind of effort more often. The choreography is great and grounded in martial arts while still looking very Jedi and grounded in Star Wars, probably wasn't practiced as many millions of times as this fight bc time and budget, it's daring to be more brutal than Disney or Star Wars usually allow, and the emotional intensity was decently high watching it. However, the emotional intensity is inherently different because it's a show, on a show's budget, and not one of the movies. We watch them both differently. I'd say Acolyte is a solid step in the right direction, and in several ways Acolyte is the Star Wars I've wanted since I was a kid re-watching this very scene. Ray Park as Darth Maul killed it, and he was the first action character that I really loved and had all the toys of since I was 3, before any superhero. Darth Maul was the reason I whooped neighborhood bullies in stick fights and got into martial arts when I was older. I've always wanted more Star Wars characters to bring Darth Maul's level of energy to the fights and make that big of an impression with their look and acting. I always wanted the story to try more different things, show us new things, and make us ask a question now and then, and I feel like Acolyte is giving me all of that. Sorry for the rant, I don't think the claim is entirely without merit even though I subjectively disagree with it. They put their whole asses into it and it was sick.

My favorite scene in Starwars. Maul embraces this fight like no other character, patiently and methodically hunting his prey across the galaxy. When the gates open he is out numbered 30 to 1, with two Jedi to defeat. Maul wanted the fight, he wanted to beat both Jedi at once. Doesn’t say a word, just focuses his anger and energy into his sole purpose.

Perhaps I'm exaggerating but for me 0:38 is the perfect example of why Star Wars is a Saga as big/powerful as it is. The creativity of all the universe is amazing, and how original it all felt with each movie. 'You know swords, but what if the were made out of LASERS!' and then, 'you know light sabers, but what if they had TWO EDGES!' , and then with General Grievous 'You know light sabers, but what if one had FOUR OF THEM!! SPINNING!'. It all felt new and original, but without it feeling something out of Star Wars. That's why I think the Secuel Trilogy fell so deep. It all was a copy of the past/fan service where the Precuel Trilogy had very big creative challenges

This duel still stands alone as a representation of the ancient conflict between the Sith and Jedi and what it would have looked like when the Sith were at the height of their power. Honestly, the thing i like most about this scene is the window into each of their personalities when trapped between the gates. Maul is impatiently pacing back and forth, eager to kill his prey like a predator. Qui Gon is tensely, but patiently meditating, to reserve his strength and focus. And finally Obi Wan, helplessly stuck behind, but alert and ready to reach and help his friend the very second the gates open. Not a single word of dialogue between them, and we learn so much about them by simply watching. It's such a small thing, but i massively appreciate little character moments like that.
