In this episode, The Opinionated Quilter shows you how easy the Scrap Crazy template sets from Creative Grids are to use to make a fast quilt. In addition, she compares the price of 12" square rulers finding the the new Glow Ruler is far too expensive and unnecessary.

Carolina Moore is a great Quilter and Inventor! I appreciate the lighted rulers she invented for those Quilters with severe degenerative conditions of their eyes and hands💕 IMHO, these are speciality rulers that happily enable these particular Quilters to continue quilting, sewing and teaching the younger, eager Quilters! Yes, the price is a point to consider, but when you think of other electronic tools, they’re pretty much in line. Thankfully, I’m not at this point in my life to “need” a lighted ruler yet, but just around the corner, I’m thankful to know there is hope to continue with my craft if a lighted ruler becomes a necessity💕 Can’t wait to see the construction and finishing of your coat Maureen!💕🧵

Great point on those visually challenged to be able to continue to quilt. ❤

It's going to be a beautiful coat! Thanks for the opinion on the rulers. I recently found my Creative Grids rulers slipping a bit (even new ones) and have fallen in love with Quilter's Select. At first I didn't like the QS as they would not move, but that's the point! I wish you'd review cutting mats. Martelli get a lot of love but they're very expensive and smaller than the others. Creative Grids seem good as their numbers go in both directions. Any suggestions on mats?

I bought a pattern once-I think it was Laundry Basket Quilt Company- to make a jacket that I never did but will some day. I feel if somebody buys a quilt from thrift store or have one they just do not use but would like to make a jacket out of it then do it. Recycling is in mine and many peoples nature. I would rather it be worn before in the yard as mechanics towel or dog chew toy. To each his own I guess. As far as the rulers go I try to buy what I will use and when on sale. If I buy specialty rulers it will be worn out or moved on. I will never spend $85 no matter what it does but somebody with bad eyes may need it so to each his own. Thank you for all the information you put in each episode. I look forward to Monday mornings for KZbin to let me know you are up. Now my dog wants to go walk so until next week.

I used the Crazy Six to make my grandson a quilt. It took me quite a while to cut out from my scraps. I like the template for it's versatility. Mary Douglass Salina KS

I like the Creative grid rulers, they are well marked and reasonably priced compared to the others. Could you provide more info on the jacket pattern that you are using, the pattern wasn't very clear in the video. Great video as usual. Look forward to your videos each week. ❤❤❤

I've used the crazy eight with scrap batiks. Made a great throw size and I love how it turned out. Once you use the template to cut out the pieces they've gotten together wonderful.

I agree. I’ll start with Creative Grids and Tucker rulers. My only “maybe” is the Make It 8 ruler. Thank you for the review.

I just recently purchased the CG crazy block set of templates to make a border on a quilt. This is a great use to make the fabric for a jacket. Think I with start a new fabric pull from my stash to make a jacket. Thank you.

I will definitely be chatting with you when I get in. I have been wanting to make a quilting coat foreverrrrr but I don’t really know how to sew I am a quilter. I believe I have that set of rulers so I will have to talk with you. I agree about the lighted ruler, I saw it and did a huh???? The price knocked the wind out of me especially when they said it was for fussy cutting🤣😂

I agree with you on the rulers. My deciding factor on rulers is that I only want clear and I love Creative Grids for that reason. Can't wait to see your coat. I'm very much against cutting up old quilts for clothing. If you really want to recycle it or you hate it and can't keep it, try an animal shelter or rescue. They might be able to use it.

To this viewer, the scattering of yellows and bright lime greens could be rearranged to balance the colors. The balance is heavy yellow on left side, greens too close on right side. A small border would look great too on each square. Looking forward to seeing finished coat. If a quilt is in a thrift shop. any cutting to upcycle seems ok to me.

I totally agree about the rulers. I recently asked for the sewtites cutting system that was insanely expensive and ended up returning it because it wasn’t worth the cost in my opinion. It had magnets that were falling out of their holders and the mats scarred after the first use you could feel the cuts I had made on the “self healing mat.” For $525 🇨🇦 that buys a lot of quality self healing mats.

I have the Crazy 6" template set, and it was really fun to make a quilt out of it. I used the pattern on the back of the instruction sheet and like you said, it goes together so easy. As to rulers, i have too many probably, but Creative Grids are my favorites, especially the specialty ones like the Pineapple, Log Cabin, Curved Log Cabin and Cat's Cradle, etc. The results are so good. As I commented on one of your earlier videos, the lighted ruler is a great idea, but way too pricey in my opinion. I'm looking forward to seeing your finished jacket.

I just got the 8" set. It is neat because of the "beam" or "kite" in the corner which can be done in an accent color with the crazy patches, or used separately.

I have not a real opinion on rulers - yet, beeing a new quilter and haven't used mine much by now. But I do have a question regarding the coat: I come from the clothes sewing and just inherited a bunch of prequilted material (bodywarmers in the 80s/90s 😉) from my late mother. Each piece of fabric is too small for a jacket by itself, so my plan was to make a pieced jacket. My biggest concern is the fabric flow (I hope it is the correct word) that every sewing pattern normally needs for the fitting. How does that work with pieced quilted fabric? The same question applies to a pieced jeans skirt, where the hemline is even more important ... 😇 Would you be inclined to show how you're going at it in a future video? I really would apreciate that. I already learned a lot by watching your take on things, especially when my OCD is getting aggitated with other tutorials. Your way of going at things methodically, helps me a lot. Take care 🤗 - Europe 🌷

I don’t like qs at all. Something about the markings. I have some cg but use my olfas the most. The prices of rulers have really gone up! I’d rather spend my money on fabric. lol

I was wondering why buy a bunch of different glow rulers when you can just spend a little more and get the CutterPillar Glow LED lighted cutting board and use any ruler you want.

I agree those 1/2 inch rulers have caused me some grief. I was wondering about highlighting tape on the half inch mark would help. Haven’t tried that yet.

I have Macular degeneration and I use different lighting to help. I can’t see (for me) the price. I like creative grids because they started making rulers for left handed people like myself. I can’t wait to see the jacket when it’s finished. Beautiful fabric
