Just a quick tip. You don’t have to incinerate the weeds to kill them. Even a quick pass will do the job. Just like when you are cooking them, if they look wilted and slightly cooked, your done. If they look black and burned, their overdone. Propane costs money and weeding takes time. This tip will save you both. Keep up the good work. My wife and I have an off the grid permaculture farm in Southern Illinois.

I use a torch as well, I also found if you wet the area down first, and then just pass over the weeds you steam the plants, you don't actually need to "char" them away. I like that because I freak out when I see fire starting to spread. If the flame hits the plant for 1-2 seconds is usually enough to kill it. If you press your thumb on part of the leaf you will see a thumb print remains and it will be dead in a day or two.

The best approach is to heat the leaves up to boiling point, which kills them, but not burn them away. That way the dead leaves stay on top of the root and smother it. If you burn the leaves away, the root grows more leaves. Nature has spend millions of years learning to deal with forest fires.
@ernieduncan602
@ernieduncan602 Жыл бұрын
exactly, I always tell people who inevitably stop to talk to me when they see me out with my tank and torch, think about it like blanching green beans, all you really want to do is watch for that bright green color, which lets you know you've burst the cells of the leaves, its not recommended but I generally lightly mist the are prior to using torch to help prevent any dry matter from igniting, which it does anyway but being wet slows down the flare ups, which helps lessen the need for spraying water after youve burned which tends to lessen the kill rate on weeds that have been burned because they don't dry down fast enough. (i was a chef and forget the vast majority of people have never "blanched" anything, and they most people don't even cook for themselves any more, but it seems to help people understand the goal isnt to burn but to gravely injure the weeds lol )

I think if you do this often enough, the weeds will eventually completely die because you'll have exhausted the reserve of energy stored in the roots. But you'd have to burn them back repeatedly as they grow, even when they are tiny.
@fredrickdakine
@fredrickdakine 2 жыл бұрын
Many of them are dying, however, being weeds, new seeds are carried in on the wind and what-not, and you'll get new growth anyway. If your weed isn't particularly prolific, this should eradicate them fairly quickly though, I expect. These are popular on the farms on Big Island, Hawaii, which are on the border of the rainforest, and get insane weed grass/vines which grow over 2 inches a day most months. Only hand weeding, poisoning, and burning seems to have any real impact on some of the vines and such out here.

Never burn in an area with wood chips without a garden hose handy. You will want to wet down the area after burning, whether you see any smoldering or not. Mulch fires can travel deep underground. I've had to put out mulch fires myself during a dry summer, when someone had tossed a lit cigarette into a mulched landscaping area. You could only see a few wisps of smoke - but after pouring multiple 5 gallon buckets of water, I could feel the vibrations under my feet from the water boiling.

My flamethrower has proven to be a resounding success. It eliminates about 95% of my weed eating. Really saves time. After initial burning, 2 times, one week apart, things look pretty good. I'm able to go a month between drainage ditch cleanout, fire break clearing and driveway gravel grass burnout. The amount of yard mowing, weed eating, raking and straightening up is vastly reduced, leaving more time for reading in the shade or staring at a drainage ditch I need to dig. Aargh...

I bought and used the same exact tool recently . Allow me to say it throws a massive amount of heat and unfortunately it will burn through a tankful of propane in less than an hour. Not a problem when it was 8.00 for a fill up but now it is 14.00. Takes time to get use to it ..... still not sure if it is more cost , time or effort effective over a weed killer like Eliminator Weed Killer Concentrate which kills the root. Small jobs with this not a problem larger areas worth considering other options. If I could I would return mine .

Try it in Hawaii, I've had the fire department show up twice, on an Island with a active volcano that spews as much pollution as mankind into the atmosphere the reasoning is "smoke". We have more fireworks smoke than if everyone burnt weeds. I agree it is the best way to control some unwanted invasive plants.

The volcano 🌋 fact is true. They do produce far more pollution to the atmosphere than man can do. Though they are out of our control. Mt. St. Helens in 1980 is a good recent example. Hawaii volcanoes aren’t as bad, except for the recent eruptions last year that really created a lot.

@@Xyquest Eh, one devastating Earth fart could send us into an ice age. It could be worse than all mankind's influence combined, see Yellowstone Caldera. But on the average day... "Scientists estimate that volcanoes worldwide emit, on average, about 1.5 million metric tons of CO2 per day (only about 2% of the amount that human activity causes). Yet that estimate may be far too low because it’s based on measurements from only 33 of the world’s most volcanically active peaks (only three of which are ice-covered), among the 1500 or so that have erupted in the past 10,000 years. More data gathered from Iceland-as well as Antarctica, which is home to dozens of ice-smothered volcanoes-may help scientists come up with a better estimate for volcanic CO2 emissions." www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/09/ice-covered-icelandic-volcano-may-emit-more-carbon-dioxide-all-country-s-other "...spectacular volcanic eruptions, like that of Mt. St. Helens in 1980 and Mt. Pinatubo in 1991, actually lead to short-term global cooling, not warming..." www.scientificamerican.com/article/earthtalks-volcanoes-or-humans/ I picked relatively mild websites to prevent the outrage over politics and MSM sources.

I just bought a new house but the lawn is completely over run with clover and a few other weeds. However I wasn't too sure how well this kills off the root systems to keep them gone long enough to choke any future growth out with new grass seed.

I am seriously going to have to try this. Our garden was unusable last year, I got invaded by some stupid weeds that have a 1inch hard as rock stalk and grow to be 6-7 feet high! They took over the garden almost over night right after it was freshly tilled. We just couldn't get rid of them before they took over the whole garden. We were also thinking of using some kind of herbicide, but we are not sure which kind to buy in bulk that's safe for our vegetables. If anyone knows the answer to that one please let me know. The little 2 litre bottles at the local Walmart would be like pissing into a wind storm, we need a few acres worth.

I used week killer but now i have a bunch of dead weeds. Think this would have got rid of them completely instead of leaving dead weeds behind

I find an even faster and easier way is the exact opposite of a blow torch a power washer with the 0° nozzle. Blasts everything out of those cracks and it looks so clean afterwards

Recommend to fill the cracks with cement after using the torch so you will ever have to worry about weeds anymore and the torch can be used to start a fire pit fire its so easy and cheap for burning big logs make sure you don't live it to closed to the fire for long periods of time because it will burn the hose be safe

Thanks for sharing. I was curious about these and if they really worked. I laughed at the moment you mentioned you mentioned the gardens as I was just asking myself that at that moment... as if you were listening. Cheers.

This is a good video. I will take a hybrid approach. Burn the weeds. Then follow up with a total vegetation killer to take care of the roots.
@frandanco6289

This might not work, because vegetation killers need something to land on like leaves, so the plant will absorb it into its system and then it will start to die...

Doesn't this cause fire to spread from underneath the plants. I think I saw something about this in the fire code some where.
