It's sad that the rules changed so much. There was a time where grabbing your opponents leg was legal and I feel Judo lost alot when all those legendary throws involving leg grabs were made illegal. I have a 2nd Dan and when in friendly randori with other Judokas who started when I did, we found ourselves constantly doing those illegal throws still. At least its not in competition lol!!!!

One of the best throwing techniques to get as much "ippon" is the "uchi mata". The "tomoi nage" is another throw that can get you a good ippon. The best submission technique is the "juji gatame" - or armbar. If the opponent taps out very immediately in pain, that could an ippon - and you win!
@AnimeGuy2215 жыл бұрын
1:43 its also essential to control the bottom half too as if there legs get on top of your own you are in a loosing position

Dont get me wrong, I have massive respect for a martial art that established as judo, but I don't really know the rules (duh... I am watching this video). But I really don't understand why you are not allowed to touch the legs of your opponent... Shouldn't a martial art be about efficiency? It seems pretty efficient to me to grab a leg for a throw of any kind ;)
@horreheitedet43206 жыл бұрын
It used to be legal, but a playstyle emerged where players would walk bending their upper bodies downward to be the first person to grab the opponents legs. Simply against what the intended fighting style was. It also looked very stupid.
@curryman19956 жыл бұрын
its not really a martial arts in this context, its a sport.

Yeah cause everyone started trying to be the first one to grab legs so it was very focused on that

TIP - NEVER EVER GRIP SOMEONE'S GI unless you immediately or almost immediately follow that with a throwing technique! If you are caught gripping without making an effort to do a throw afterwards, you can face a "shido". Several "shido" (or warnings) can lead you to a disqualification - or "hansoku make" - giving the opponent an automatic ippon - and you lose the judo match.

So much technique involved! Soo I’m a lifelong wrestler. Been wanting to get into this so bad but there’s no schools near me. The thing that’s tricky to me is you can’t touch the legs? But I see leg sweeps? And ankle trips?
@PatrickStar-gm5mg2 жыл бұрын
A year late but I think it mostly pertains to your hands so no shooting the traditional double, single, high crotch etc but sweeps and trips are permissible

Only leg grabs are banned on throws, you can use a leg grab to break a turle

And any unsporting or disrepect during a judo match results in a shido (warning), shikkaku (loss of points), or even worse, a kick-off from the match with the non-disqualifiying party getting the "ippon" - known as a "hansoku make".

WOW this was very interesting. I want to watch some Judo competitions, now. I dont' get the holding the "same side of your opponent" rule though. i dont' understand what is the "same side".
@kiefermoyaert2 жыл бұрын
It is when both of your hands are on the same side of the gi. It's a bit difficult to explain but if you want to grab kumi kata (the grip) you need one hand on the left and one on the right. And they're are some little things that have changed now but i think that if you watch some tournaments, you're imediatly gonne see those (for example : if you have a shido and time is up, you still go in golden score now). sorry for bad English

@scottb45404 жыл бұрын
So is judo going to help as a form of self defence if you have to defend yourself on the street? Just wondering because if someone has their shirt off then you can’t grab them? I’m just trying to educate myself here,
@vladimirdobrov1704 жыл бұрын
Many judo throws can be performed without using a jacket by grabbing an arm, wrist or neck. But it's a sport in the first place. Self-defence skill is more like a bonus in this case.
@uncle_martin11312 жыл бұрын
The "For judo u need people with sleeves" is an old joke. U can replicate pretty mutch every technique in a no-gi situation. You would just hold the arm instead of the gi

I think 1 ippon for win rule is so bad, it has to be 2 at least, after first ippon competitors know eachother than maybe the defeated one make 2 counter ippon and win, isn't this way is more fun and fair

make a video of judo in streetfight
@The46Chief5 жыл бұрын
"Judo has a moral code that operates on politeness, courage, sincerity, honor, modesty, respect, self control, and friendship." Proving it's value to thugs in a street fight defies all those principals. Why not take it a step farther and show me a thug street fighter against a 10mm auto? I grew up in the streets and the reality is there are no rules or principles to a street fight, but there's great honor in Judo.

When I was a teen I used it. I pulled someone's shirt over their head and hit them with a hip toss. I didn't get to finish the fight because it was stopped but they were dazed and didn't know what hit them. They started it to be clear. I wasn't going around Jigoro Kanoing people

Bjj is far better than today olympic judo or ijf rules kodokan judo only kosen judo can compere with bjj. Bjj stared from newaza and evolve far better because is combine techniques from a lot of grappling arts. somoene can say that it steal froms others but i am ok with it from the time that is effective and the king of newaza
@bigmember59085 жыл бұрын
throwing the daylights out of someone is pretty useful
@Dynamic60005 жыл бұрын
Far better how? I study both and they both have pros and cons. For example for self defense or a street fight scenario you are better off using judo; slamming some one and ending the fight quickly rather then getting into a full grappling match on the ground. Bjj is wonderful if you have a fair contest and know it’s a 1vs1 but anyone who studies bjj will tell you it takes time to get position and submit some one. Imagine you go to the ground and start grappling with some one who has a little bit of grappling knowledge and starts defending and then what you didn’t realize is he has a friend who now decides to jump in and start attacking you, you will very likely be hurt or killed because you are grappling with some one on the ground preventing you from being able to escape. Of course bjj rains supreme in fair rules grappling but If some one asked me what to learn if they could only choose 1 I honesty would say judo first. However Understanding no one proficiency is best and no one proficiency is good for all scenarios is important.
