I cringed a little when you were drilling that rivet. The bit looked like it was going to break. It may have just been the camera angle but it seemed to be flexing a little too much. Before you even think about buying: Take your rivet out first and measure everything. Even going exactly by the chart there is no guarantee it will fit. The roll pins will be too small. So measure the size of the pin/rivet you remove and get yourself a larger roll pin. You'd think they had this all figured out by now.
@LinenAssociate2 жыл бұрын
The roll pins are the right size. The only reason they are there is to prevent the piston from unscrewing under recoil. I don't know what your issue was but mine installed just fine on a Romanian AKM.
@andygold11 ай бұрын
It looked to me like the pin was too short. If he centered it in the piston body, it didn't look long enough to actually touch either side of the bolt carrier to keep it from rotating.

It is as easy as you see in this video. I just installed the KNS piston on a Romanian PSL (yes there are different lengths pistons. Measure to ensure you get the correct piston for your AK. PSL was pretty simple to get; there is only one. But I did get one for a Bulgarian SLR107FR - I had no idea going in to the project that there was a difference in piston lengths between 16 inch Barrel length AKs or that there was a difference in length as to where the rivet was installed - now I do). I did the install by using a pointed punch to notch the rivet at the beginning, then I used a drill to make a small hole in the rivet to rest the next punch. After that, I braced the bolt carrier and hit the rivet three times with the punch and hammer, and it fell out the other side. Unscrewed the piston,...cleaned out the hole,...screwed on the KNS piston,...drove in the proved roll pin. Done. You don’t have the clean and polished rivet connection area anymore - you have a hole and a roll pin, it’s ok. But it was simple to install. Took about 10 total minutes and that’s from a guy who is slow and special. Looking forward to the range. Thanks for posting this video, it helped!!!

@earlycuyler22954 жыл бұрын
I had the same issue. Holes dont align unles there is around 1/8" ish gap between piston and bolt carrier. There are 3 options. 1- drill holes that do align. Dont use a bit you plan on using again. 2- thread it in and locktite the snot out of it, and thread in a pair of set screws in the rivet holes. 3- just leave the small gap and be done with it. Luckily most aks have enogh " wiggle room" to allow for a slightly to long piston. Ive shot my rifle in each of these configurations and had no real issues. Of course the adjustment changes if its not all the way threaded in, but still well within functionality.

@@AmazonWebService98 so mine did have a hole on one side where you can clearly see threading and a retaining pin, but on the opposite side it’s smooth. Now just so you know the manufacturer of any Ak installs the retaining pin at an angle and then welds one side shut. but your gonna want to go as straight as possible and then break the weld by putting in a “mounted vice” and I used a Milwaukee cheater wrench with a longer bar to twist it off and break the weld once broken it will slightly crush the inside thread but that’s ok because your gonna get a thread tap or dye and re thread the bolt carrier for the new piston after that is done you just install the new kns adjustable piston, line up the holes and insert the new pin in place and your done if ya need to get a hold of me later let me know and I’ll post what I used to re thread later I have to find it in my tool box

Please specify whether your factory piston has this feature so we can include a part that replicates the guide function, AGP-C-YU. Excess gas on an AK will still go "in your face" through the dust cover. Thus one of the many reasons not having an over gassed AK is good. Just because the AK vents gas at the gas block doesn't mean it can't send excess gas into your face. Not all of it vents.

I'm out in my garage trying to install this on a PSL today. First, it doesn't line up. Prior to swapping gas pistons you should measure the entire length of carrier/piston group and match it. Because of the fact that there are so many different variations out there of where the cross hole is drilled in the carrier, maybe you guys shouldn't drill the threaded end for the piston. Let the customer adjust the piston in his or her carrier and drill their own hole to make it 'fit' their rifle. I like the product and I really want to get it up and running, but if you have a riveted piston, this is not that easy. The pins that were supplied with mine are not for the carrier/piston connection - they look to me to be spare roll pins for the adjustable piston to me. They would need to be 1/8" longer to even come close to holding the piston in to the carrier and even then they are not the appropriate size. Second, the measurements are not the same as a PSL piston - overall length and the actual exposed part of the piston itself. I'm not a meathead, but some kind of written directions or specs for each type of piston could be included in the package that you buy. I got a decal. Which is cool (I personally like stickers) but worthless for answering any questions or helping me to understand what I'm supposed to do with this. I would rather have an instruction sheet. It's very well built and it looks like it will function flawlessly. I wish I would have known I needed a new piston rivet prior to install day. i'm not an AK builder, or I guess I would have.

It's an AK. 1940's technology. It's more like black smithing than gun smithing.

@@aphillips229 spoken like someone that has swallowed the rumors about akms for decades.just because a rifle CAN stand up to vulgar abuses of home spun gunsmiths and still function,does not mean that someone that knows what their doing cannot make legitimate improvements if they do them correctly.this is just pitiful

Gary Hughs builds some phenominal AK's & mike papas is pretty well versed too. They know what they're doing. Plus not everyone had a vice and drill press.

@@dilloncodianne6732 yeah but anyone can aquire the proper tools for far less than the cost of replacing the rifle you can easily ruin working like this.im not doubting this guys skill as a gunsmith, but no-one should be encouraging this type of "work" be done on a rifle.and i know i dont speak for everyone, but i sure dont want a " gunsmith" using methods like this on one of my firearms, and makes me rule out EVER giving him any of my business. Why not show people how to work on low cost tools? For about $250 you could set up a reasonably equiped shop from harbor freight and not destroy firearms in the process.

Holy not using a drill press and bending the drill bit while using a hand drill to mess up my ak Batman!
