When you're shifting in this video, do you just drop the clutch or do you feather it for a split second? I'm trying to perfect my shifting and I'm having issues with high RPM shifting. I'm afraid to just drop the clutch but if I hold it for a second it feels rough, like I'm burning up my clutch between shifts. It also doesn't help that I live in Colorado so I have steep hills everywhere I go. High RPM shifting is becoming a necessity... Any advice would be appreciated! I drive a 5 speed 2014 Civic EX.
@NUNIS01237 жыл бұрын
TwisTed Taipan don't feather the clutch when you are shifting whether it's downshift or upshift just drop it and shift into the next gear. Feathering the clutch will burn it, the only thing that you should be feathering is your brakes or accelerator pedal.
@joshuafox22167 жыл бұрын
Release the clutch to the friction point after shifting, then release completely. It takes time, but this process becomes faster as you do it more. Makes it nice and smooth while normal driving. For High RPM driving, just dump the clutch. You'll be fine.

@zerotohundred2 жыл бұрын
To remove shake we need to reduce clutch pedal freeplay by making sure where is the clutch bite point. Stop the car, clutch in, put 1st gear, release clutch slowly until the car start to move. That is the bite point, anything before is just free play. Use that useable zone to shift your gear. That mean you need to press the clutch a bit before you actually shift. Try it and let me know 👍

But the brake modulation seems affected. A nice technical solution imo would be to use a clutch actuator with a button on the shifter. This way you can use left foot braking as well .
@fL0p2 жыл бұрын
It's not perfect, it's a servo-clutch, and it becomes a radically different experience than using the pedal (mechanical actuation and feedback, even if coupled to some electronic sensing meanwhile), I've used that system because it's included in our most recent tractor (Landini Rex 4, like the ones you can see in this video, kzbin.info/www/bejne/pn2VZaxoe6d1f6M ) and I guess is commonplace in other brands and models, it's an assistance when you need to use both feet to brake asimetrically, or when you don't feel like using your foot because you're also using the hand throttle (and that's because the work you're doing calls for it), it has adjustment integrated for both engagement and release sensitivity, but I haven't managed to find a release preset (out of 6 levels, from the most sudden to the most progressive) that I like for when I'm driving it at top-speed (the most car-like experience you can expect when using it thru the day), I always resort to clutch as usual, like I've been doing for years while driving a car... But I don't disagree with your initial idea. Just telling you that it's a nightmare from an engineering, maintenance and implementation standpoint. The most precise clutching I've experienced is the one mechanically actuated.
@VinRZ2 жыл бұрын
How do you actually downshift two gears so quickly? Do you completely let out the clutch then try to execute downshift again? There isn't a lot of tutorials on this. And I've found skipping gear downshift, I would mess up the rev sometimes.
@zerotohundred2 жыл бұрын
Yes 1 clutch action for each gear. Good question. So you don't need to use the entire clutch pedal travel. Try to identify the clutch bite and release range, and only use that zone. It will give you a more consistent, smoother and accurate rev matches. When skipping gears make sure to really jab the throttle a lot more for a sharper and higher rev climb, than you would with individual gear downshifts

@chrisml917 жыл бұрын
zerotohundred I thought EP3 K20 is cable. Yeah I need to practice more when the car is not moving. I can time it right when just doing a normal rev match without brake. The position that I place my heel when driving needs to change slightly to heel and toe, which is difficult when I’ve had it in that position for 8+ years.
@zerotohundred7 жыл бұрын
Chris Loftus can't really get anywhere without the car moving to be honest since it relates to actual braking. If you're doing rev match right, then you might want to try putting less toes on the brake pedal to ease modulation, therefore give you more leverage for blipping. That will be best for on road application.

Hi Tom, I've been watching your channel for some time and of course practicing my own driving after being inspired by your amazing videos. One thing I've noticed besides your flawless downshifts is how fast you up shifts, what is the technique behind being able to shift that fast without the car jerking? I know the old say slow is smooth, smooth is fast but there seems like some technique behind being able to upshift and it doesn't feel like you let the revs drop too much before the gear engages. Please help me out brother! Thanks :)
@zerotohundred6 жыл бұрын
While shift movement is crucial, the trick is all in the legs. No matter how quick the hand is, things doesn't get moving until the footwork is done. If you think you're not shifting quick enough, chances are you might be splitting the steps where you clutch in first, then start to shift and when the gear enters, you release the clutch. Try to do it all at once. Antiticaption is key but don't let that slow your learning. Secondly, clutch pedal travel. There is only a useable amount of clutch pedal travel in every manual car. You need not use the entire pedal travel. Find the bite / release point by engaging a gear at standstill then release the clutch to determine where it bites and releases. This step is also important to know where your pedal dead zone is (the empty part that doesn't do anything before the clutch actually moves). Once you do that, work within the sweet spot and you will waste less time and have less free-play between shifts. Thirdly, you want to prime the clutch pedal before every shift by gently pressing it to by pass the dead zone so just as you're about to shift, the clutch ready to disengage. Hope this helps to improve your shifts, please post your findings here to develop your skills further alright

One situation: In 5th gear, you want to downshift to 3rd gear. (Assume blipping always occurs at every downshift as below) Do you press the clutch at 5th, shift+blip and lift at 4th, press back at 4th, shift+blip and lift at 3rd, then throttle? OR Do you press the clutch at 5th, shift+blip to 4th (without lifting clutch), shift+blip to 3rd, then lift at 3rd and then throttle? Meaning: do you have to lift the clutch for every downshift every time you H&T or can you shift more than once but still have the clutch in until the desired (lower) gear?

Hey man, a quick question. I just started going for Touge, so will I skid off the track if I downshift without doing the H&T or get my wheels locked during corners ?
@zerotohundred8 жыл бұрын
Well to be honest locking the wheels depend on how intense you are with your footwork without H&T. You can cheat by modulating the release of the clutch pedal during downshifts. Many race drivers may not master H&T but are still able to cope this way.
@zerotohundred8 жыл бұрын
Try releasing the clutch pedal as much as the engine would allow. As the clutch pedal is released, the car will begin to brake in accordance to engine speed. So the rate of release will determine the harshness.
@blueblood6228 жыл бұрын
alright man, thanks for the tips. I skidded off track once, made a mistake by tapping the brakes while cornering haha
@blueblood6228 жыл бұрын
And one more, it does cause damage when you downshift constantly while driving at a certain speed right?
@zerotohundred8 жыл бұрын
+Faker Jr. Well, just as long as the RPMs doesn't exceed the red line, your engine will be fine. As for the clutch, there will definitely be accelerated wear on the pads without the application of H&T

Can someone more experienced help me out with a question? I noticed he doesn't fully release the clutch during a sequence of downshifts, by that I mean he fully presses the clutch when he's downshifting but when he releases the clutch to let the engine drop the gear he actually keeps the clutch at what appears to be 30-40% (maybe the biting point?) to then fully press it again for another downshift and he only fully releases the clutch when he's done downshifting for that corner. Is this the correct way of doing quick downshifts on every car? Or is this maybe something related to this car in specific or maybe his setup or something? I always thought you had to fully release the clutch between the gears. Thank you.
@zerotohundred3 жыл бұрын
You are right about him releasing the clutch back to the bite point. It feels more precise this way as the rate of release and clutch travel remain the same, as with when pressing the clutch. It also serve as a form of muscle memory for the subsequent shifts. This can be applied in both fast or slow shifting
@zerotohundred3 жыл бұрын
If you were referring to the intital press before the actual press, then that is dond to clear the dead zone / free play. This is to get closer to the bite point.

amazingly difficult to maintain braking while sliding my heel to reach for the gas pedal. his pedal configuration allows him to slide from bottom to up. but for my car (and most cars) we have to do "slide down" method. correct me if im wrong. nonetheless, amazing footwork, amazing video!
@zerotohundred8 жыл бұрын
+Seven Hrtz its true there are many pedal variations and each require a certain change in feet movemens. Although in the video, he's not actually sliding bottom up but nudging the gas pedal. Slide on the brake pedal yes but ultimately in any pedal configuration, it's very much dependant on how you would nudge/jab the gas pedal. Some like the floor mounted gas pedal like this video takes less effort, while the top downs would require a little more lifting / raising of the heel to reach the gas, thanks for watching!

I have a question. Why do you hit the gas everytime you decrease your gear?
@zerotohundred3 жыл бұрын
It's called heel and toe / rev matching. To match engines revs to the the lower gear it is being shifted into
@abdullaharif64552 жыл бұрын
This is what is called rev-matching. While downshifting, the driver presses the clutch fully and shifts to a lower gear and at the same time presses the accelerator pedal briefly. This is to quickly and seamlessly match the engine speed to the RPM it is supposed to be on the lower gear. This helps for a smoother downshift and puts less stress on the clutch and transmission. It also minimizes the loss of balance of the car, which is very important in racing, especially when taking a turn. If a downshift is performed without rev-matching, the downshift is not smooth. The car engine takes power from the wheels to sync the RPM with the higher speed of the higher gear. Thus the car suddenly decelerates, jerks and loses balance a bit. The clutch and transmission also have to do a lot of work to bring the engine speed to where it should be on the lower gear, so they also experience more stress and wear. There are several ways of rev-matching. The simplest way to do it is simply press the accelerator briefly while shifting down a gear at the same time, with the clutch fully in of course. A more advanced technique, called heel-and-toe, involves rev-matching while braking at the same time. Here the driver has one part of his right foot on the brake pedal, and another part of his right foot moving towards the accelerator pedal and pressing it. This is what the driver is doing in this video.

I‘m new to this. Why does he hold brake and tap gas at the same time while shifting down? Why press gas when he is shifting down anyway? Is it to maintain the power and not letting the car roll while down shifting?
