I LOVE nougat, or torrone, or whatever you want to call it. I lived in the Middle East for a few years, and all the candy and nut stores sold variations of this wonderful confection. I always had a supply of torrone in my bag. Sometimes I would get torrone layered with apricot fruit leather, covered in dried rose petals, coated with chopped nuts, and so much more.

I have years ago bought nougat in Montelimar aling the S French coast. I too love torrone but its best to pay a bit more in the panaderia ir pastelería and eat more slowly than to buy from the supermarkets. I love the idea if the rose petals.

@Lisa_Flowers
@Lisa_Flowers 2 жыл бұрын
@@miserableexistence2918 it's because this role is generally filled by women and there is generally a social expectation that women are the one's who are _supposed_ to do it (cooking an entire meal sometimes alone, cleaning up after, etc.) and that social expectation doesn't really exist for men in a lot of cultures. Like they may step in and do it and they _should_ be appreciated for that but the general expectation is for women to cook and clean and serve their husband and children and to take care of themselves last, and they are rarely recognized or rewarded for it in a meaningful way, and often treated poorly or shamed if they don't. It isn't always a choice because they are raised to do that and shamed for not doing it, whether or not another parent is present. Often the work it takes for Christmas to run smoothly is taken for granted by their husbands and children, who can just enjoy festivities. Even female children are expected to step-up and do housework or cooking around this time of year while their male siblings often don't. Men get appreciated all the time in the gender roles they are expected to and generally perform (in the workplace, they are literally paid more than their female coworkers), most historical figures who's work and accomplishments are focused on and appreciated are men, etc. But housework and historically 'female/feminine labour' is not appreciated despite how much hard work it is, specifically _because_ it's work women are expected to do and work women mostly do . Hence the need for comments like the one above. Your dad may have had to do all of those things and that should 100% be appreciated but that generally isn't the norm and most dad's are not primarily responsible for the intense amounts of cooking and housework that happen over the holiday, nor are they socially pressured into doing it. They either do it because they want to or more rarely _have_ to because the other parent is present. Whereas women face that pressure and burden almost all the time regardless of the situation, and are more likely you be shamed for not doing it. Hence the need for them specifically to be appreciated for it. All in all I agree that it's probably better to just say 'shootout to all the *people* who cook over the holidays' as that's more inclusive. I just thought I'd explain that statement like the one above are not just women getting praised simply 'because they're female'. There's contextual reasons why.

Thereafter it was all downhill. The entire cooking time was well spent with some other entertainment going on alongside. @@AO-nr7kl Well, it'd stick as much as marshmallow sticks to your mouth I guess. In its case, you have to cut the marshmallow with a knife that's been liberally coated with corn starch, or powdered sugar (which is sold with added corn starch as well, otherwise it'd clump up). Marshmallow in it's uncoated form sticks to everything, but no such thing happens in your mouth because it's coated with our… mucus.

Nougat is a term that indicates many types of sweets, this is because it is a dessert of pre-Roman tradition. Since it can be sticky, at least in Italy, there is torrone (nougat) ostiato, that is, it has an upper and lower layer made with the wafers that do not affect the flavor but avoid getting dirty.

Italian torrone! We got these (with only almonds) every year for Christmas. They came in beautifully decorated little individual boxes, wrapped in foil. I used to peel off the wafer until I realized it was edible!

@@lalaisis5126 The honey is for flavor and texture. There's loads of candys that use honey in a way that brings it's temperature up this much. Honeycomb candy is one of my favorites. It's not being included to pander to health nuts.

@@PollexTheCat Diabetes is off the charts in the United States. Number one cause of amputations and blindness. Millions of people are in prediabetic state and dont even know it. Look around at all the obesity. Candy is something to avoid as is HFCS (soft drinks) along with alot of other junk. 🤯 Time for people to get smart about what goes in their bodies. Healthcare costs are crushing our economy. Nothing personal. 🙄
