Thank you for all your suggestions. I used to make crate quilts for my shelter a long time ago. They would give me donated large bed quilts and I would turn them into many crate quilts. Now that I am retired I can start making them again. ❤

I have donated to my local shelter through the Snuggles project for years. They say no batting for dog quilts. You can use an old towel instead. Also, patchwork can be torn at the seams, so whole-cloth quilts are preferable.

This is a great idea for any quilter to have a break from the usual piecing! Sometimes we just need a simple project that makes you feel good when it's done. It's always a good thing to give your time for others!

Thank you. I am always interested in ways to help our local community. Bonus for this project is I’ll get quilting practice while reducing my fabric stash. It’s a win-win.

Better check with your local shelters most shelters will not accept these. She should’ve talked about making cat beds instead.

Love the comment that suggested this as a Girl Scout project! I have loads of fabric and this is a simple, skill building idea for a teen to learn and what a great cause. I will look into this in my area.

I made some for the animal shelter in my area. They love them. I thought they would use them inside the shelter but what they are doing is every time a dog or cat gets adopted they ask the furever pet owners to pick one of the pet quilts. Apparently , it's going so well that they wrote an article about me making them. I'm now known asthe quilt lady"... LoL 😂 I like making them for these animals because with an imperfection ...it doesn't matter. It also allows me to practice a certain block. I also write on them things like in a scrappy quilt " mutts rules" "Mutts are Loyal"... In another one I wrote "sleep eat play heel sit stay treat and repeat" Stuff like that. Anyways, like I said it's a good way to practice certain blocks and see if I like the block enough for a full quilt. ...and oh! I also have purchased panels on sale.

I sew mats for our local shelter. They have never specified what they want (no batting vs batting), or what size. I make 12" square for the kitties and they fit perfectly. The mats I use have two layers of batting. Our local shelter loves the way I make mine as they wash up so well.
@thesimplequilter74992 ай бұрын
I just took the two I made to our shelter yesterday. I also took a piece of batting to show them exactly what I put inside. They loved them and said they would work great. They even showed me some of the kitten kennels and one of the kennels had a mat in them. They were so excited to get them! I also asked if they preferred the one with one or two layers of batting and they said they would use either! Our local shelter has made so many improvements since I was last there! It was so much nicer for the animals!!!

Thank you for the great tips Michelle. It does feel good to make cat mats and kennel pads. When I make them I use up scraps of fabric and batting for filling. I make a sort of pillow form and make another “ pretty” covering for it.

I make lots of pads for our local cat shelter and I often use flannel or fleece on both sides to make them a little softer. Lots of that fabric has cat prints on it. I turn them inside out and machine quilt just like you do. They are always appreciated and given when someone adopts a cat.

I would love to make Kennel Quilts but fabric being expensive for an old lady on a measly social security….if there is an organization that donates for such a product I would really like to do this also lap quilts for veterans.

Does your local quilt guild have fabric you could use?
@carolynmills5132 ай бұрын
You might pick up blankets/sheets at Goodwill that you can use as quilt padding and covers. If I found thicker blankets, I would just double them up without padding in between. Flannel sheets with a blanket on the other side would be cozy, as would old towels. I'm in Indiana and have tons of materials. Where do you luve?

@@thesimplequilter7499 I am well aware that not all dogs will rip them to shreds but they see this as a choking hazard similar to a stuffed toy Better to give them to the homeless people who have dogs
